Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

Yes, but citing the constitution, when it's such a bizarre interpretation is essentially just words, not any real judicial theory.

He could impose martial law due to civil unrest and indefinitely postpone an election although probably not delay indefinitely. The issues with the courts are obvious (2 or his 3 supreme court appointments were extremely problematic in method, Judge Cannon is shockingly biased). It was only personnel that kept him from invoking the Insurrection Act previously and that kind of personnel would be gone in a next term (personnel is the only part of Project 2025 they're not running away from as fast as they can scurry).

I'm fairly left-wing, but an institutionalist, and I believed during his first term that our institutions would hold strong - I certainly thought The Atlantic was being overly alarmist about the fake electors plan. I no longer have that confidence.

“He could impose martial law due to civil unrest and indefinitely postpone an election although probably not delay indefinitely.”

So, unlike the previous poster I started this conversation with, you don’t think he’d somehow be able to “cancel elections” and make himself the lifelong dictator of the US.

In order for Trump to impose martial law due to civil unrest, he’d have to have obvious civil unrest. Why wouldn’t he have done that during the summer of 2020 with the George Floyd riots, if using martial law to postpone an election is his secret plan? (And if the answer is, “It wasn’t big or widespread enough to be a good excuse,” what are you anticipating will happen that he would use as an excuse?)

This thread isn’t about Trump is it? (As numerous people have pointed out).

Given it’s a two way contest Trump’s highly relevant whether you like it or not.

Gosh you really hate her don't you?! You're showing yourself up here you know...

Everyone has a past, even you maybe....

Not replying to you anymore, life's too short 🤣

Why are you clapping, did you listen to the clip?

I was clapping the pp who provided the clip, and i was mocking the person who needed "evidence" that Trump had said this (I thought virtually everyone had seen this at the time).

I do indeed have a past. I’m not standing to be the leader of the free world though.

Enjoy your Olympics!

I don't prefer Trump. I answered the question as asked. Her "fucking implicit" question was asking if we were excited about Harris. I'm not. Well done for being a twat, though.

Trump’s top people testified that he absolutely had been intending to use unrest at the time of the stop the steal rally in order to impose martial law and stop certification of Biden’s win. This is not an obscure or unknown fact.

Then you misread the question, which asked if we were excited about Harris's chances, thereby inextricably linking it to the contest with Trump - or are you incapable of holding two thoughts simultaneously?

Here’s a photo of Kamala with Willie Brown. I can certainly see nothing suspicious in why a young, beautiful woman like her would be with a knackered old bald bloke thirty years her senior.

How weird to try to make anything of a one-year relationship 30 years ago.

Speaking as someone who lived in SF in the 1990s: he was a lot more than 'a knackered old bald bloke', he was an inspiring and almost legendary figure, deeply dedicated to civil rights, champion of major urban projects, integration of local government and access to education.

Harris hardly owes her subsequent success to the fact she had a brief relationship with him. It's such a tired trope saying a successful woman got to the top through having sex with powerful men - is that what you're insinuating? Even if she got her first big job from him (she didn't) how exactly would you explain her being elected to be AG of California?

She's now leading in the national polls. She has raised more than double the amount Trump has in donations in one month. The upswell in support is very impressive.

Supporting her she has:

Beyoncé
George Clooney
Taylor Swift
Oprah
Obamas

Trump has

Hulk Hogan
Kid Rock
Alina Habba
34 felony convictions

I'd say she's stands a very good chance

I don't have a horse in this race at all-but why do people think it matters which celebrity favours which candidate?

Are people so dumb that they need to be led by celebrities (who they have zero in common with) to make a decision?

harmfulsweeties · 03/08/2024 16:34

It's also worth noting (to add to my previous post) that Clinton had the backing of Beyonce-and we all know how much that helped her.

I don't support Trump-but I really hate this nonsense that people should be voting based on what celebrity thinks what. I don't give a fuck what some out of touch billionaire thinks.

Then why didn’t he?

All talk, no action. I’m a “double hater,” but neither candidate scares me.

Right now, as the power stands, he doesn't need obvious civil unrest. He gets to decide.

He wanted to use it during the George Floyd riots. Aides drafted the orders, but as I said before, his military personnel (Mark Milley and Mark Esper) pushed back. He won't have these people around him next time, by design. He has also expressed regret that he didn't invoke it then. I'm not convinced that under those circumstances (a lack of top level people willing or wanting to push back) they wouldn't use it.

How many times has this been covered on this thread already 😂😂

Powerful celebs = social media influence

Social media influence = direct access to next generation and swing voters

The bigger the megaphone the louder the voice.

There are approximately 58.2M adult Taylor Swift fans in the US that she can influence through her social media. Beyoncé pretty much on par. Add in Lady Gaga, Megan Thee Stallion, Pink and so on. Basically a snowball effect.

This is about numbers and reach. Those who don't understand where this battle is being fought, don't understand the fight.

What Kamala Harris has done is generate enough energy to create a social movement, just like Obama did. This momentum takes off and the celebs on SM will take the ball and run with it.

Plus, she'll attract big names to events which will get people to tune in. It all feeds itself.

Question is who will sing the national anthem at her inauguration? Lady Gaga was at Biden's, Beyoncé sang at Obama's event. I'm thinking Taylor would be a fantastic choice!

I don't have to justify my opinion to some random on the Internet, or anyone else for that matter. I don't care if you agree with me, and I don't get worked up when someone doesn't share my opinion.

Clearly she gave blowjobs to the entire electorate @twodowntwotogo 😆

This is truly the trope of those too lazy or stupid to bother finding anything substantive to criticise in her record. I really like her, I'll vote for her, I've even given her money, but there are things I don't love that I could cite if I was to make an argument against her. But these right wing trolls can't be bothered with that.

I think even Trump’s wimpy sycophants won’t bend indefinitely.

Eg even though technically it appears he does have the power to withdraw from NATO, I think he would quickly be impeached (for unrelated, valid reasons) if he tried to do so. And so on.

But the bar is very, very high

FlipFlops4Me · 03/08/2024 17:04

I think that the deep racial prejudice in the US, and the huge well of mysogyny will combine to mean that no matter how much the better candidate I think she is, she stands no chance. Too many sour, bitter old white men, too many angry incels, too many fine white boys, rednecks and bastards to whom a black woman is nothing but a quick shag if she's lucky. (Edited to point out this is from their pov, not mine!!!!!)

All of whom she is worth a dozen of!

BustingBaoBun · 03/08/2024 17:09

Oh my! I didn't realise Kamala Harris had a one year relationship with someone who was old back in 1994!

Edited

They said the same about Obama. That he had no chance and that the red necks wouldn't vote for a black man.

Also, the world is changing. New generations have different priorities and have a great deal of voter power. Don't underestimate the next gen. This is who the Harris campaign is looking to reach.
