Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

To be fair, I do it quite a lot when posters bullshit. It’s fun watching them squirm!

Why would they be squirming?

🤭👍👏

It astounds me what people are prepared to forgive, or simply overlook, with Trump. He's a f* moron with no interest in anything except furthering his own interests.

I'll suggest now that, if he wins, he'll try to remove the two-term limit for the presidency. 😱

Why are you clapping, did you listen to the clip?

Oh sorry, I got user names confused. Yes, thanks - I just don't understand the strategy of posters demanding evidence. If they can post on mumsnet they must have access to google!

The problem is that google can, and will, very easily take them to exactly the wrong 'evidence', particularly depending on their previous political searches. I've seen so much on here echoing the Trump troll talking points, whether echoed naively or purposefully, I know to an inch what sources the posters are quoting.

Why would they be squirming?

Because they can’t provide any evidence for their bullshit. Surely that’s obvious, isn’t it?

FayeGreener · 03/08/2024 15:19

Here’s a photo of Kamala with Willie Brown. I can certainly see nothing suspicious in why a young, beautiful woman like her would be with a knackered old bald bloke thirty years her senior.

There wasn’t US law or case law, but SCOTUS - rightly or wrongly - cited the Constitution. As I said, “There is always, always a reason involving other laws, past cases, past legal history, the Constitution, et cetera. The Supreme Court never issues opinions without extensive write-ups on why they reached their decision.” [second emphasis added] Previous posters were acting like SCOTUS has stopped citing law in their rulings, which isn’t true.

I haven’t been to the SCOTUS decision seminar yet this year, but the presenters don’t take sides on the cases. It’s basically, “Side A argued this. Side B argued that. The majority ruled for [Side A or B], and this is what they cited. This is what the dissent[s] argued.”

”Absolute criminal immunity for official acts under core constitutional powers and presumptive immunity for other official acts certainly give pretty good cover to someone in the oval office looking to cancel an election” - not a ConLaw expert by any stretch, but POTUS does not have the core constitutional power to determine when an election takes place. Congress sets the date of elections, and presidential elections are conducted by the individual states. How, in your view, would Trump be able to cancel elections?

Yes, but citing the constitution, when it's such a bizarre interpretation is essentially just words, not any real judicial theory.

He could impose martial law due to civil unrest and indefinitely postpone an election although probably not delay indefinitely. The issues with the courts are obvious (2 or his 3 supreme court appointments were extremely problematic in method, Judge Cannon is shockingly biased). It was only personnel that kept him from invoking the Insurrection Act previously and that kind of personnel would be gone in a next term (personnel is the only part of Project 2025 they're not running away from as fast as they can scurry).

I'm fairly left-wing, but an institutionalist, and I believed during his first term that our institutions would hold strong - I certainly thought The Atlantic was being overly alarmist about the fake electors plan. I no longer have that confidence.

You and I have literally no idea what she did or didn't see in him 30 years ago.

But just keep on reposting the right wing troll shit. Honestly, if that's the best you guys can come up with, I think she's a winner.

It’s none of your business but I can. He’s an incredibly handsome man.

😂Dont be so deliberately fucking obtuse (or just plain fucking stupid?)! It's fucking implicit, given that it's a binary fucking choice between two fucking candidates, it's a perfectly valid fucking point to make. If you would prefer Trump, at least fucking own it! 🙄

I don't prefer Trump. I answered the question as asked. Her "fucking implicit" question was asking if we were excited about Harris. I'm not. Well done for being a twat, though.

And it is my business if I think it reflects on her character and ability to do her job.

I wouldn't want all my choices from 30 years ago to be considered to impact on my ability to do my job now. Kudos to you if you've been perfect for three decades.

Now do all of Trump's choices over the past 30 years please.

This thread isn’t about Trump is it? (As numerous people have pointed out).

Could you provide any proof of that unpleasant accusation in the latter part of your post?

Ah, so you're a racist as well as a misogynist. Cool.

Editing to add - not sure what's cushy about her career choices? Her jobs have been fairly stressful as opposed to making about 6 times the money in a law firm.

Proof? Do you think I’ve got photos or something?

I think when a young woman has a relationship with a much much older rich and influential man it’s a reasonable assumption she’s using her sexual wiles to get something out of the situation.

She IS a diversity hire. Literally. Biden was quite open about having got her on board as his VP because she’s black/asian/female.

twodowntwotogo · 03/08/2024 10:48

Agreed.
I think it's completely unserious and obtuse to argue that she could be worse than Trump. Even setting his awful personal characteristics and history aside - he encouraged a violent insurrection against the institutions of democracy so not liking her laugh or just stating that she wasn't a very prominent VP as reasons not to vote for her seems a deeply frivolous position.
It's a slightly strange situation as it feels like almost any Democratic candidate would be better than Trump. KH is clearly not perfect (who is) and I don't love the strategy of calling Trump and Vance 'weird' as it seems so puerile but I am more hopeful than I have been in many months that Trump can be beaten.

I think you focus a bit too much on their personal characteristics and who is the better/ nicer person. For voters, it is often just a case of whether they and their families felt better off (in terms of finances and safety) under the Trump administration or the Biden/Harris administration and for many people they felt better off under the Trump administration. They are not voting for who they want to go and have a beer with.

FayeGreener · 03/08/2024 15:47

Come on. We all know why Biden selected Kamala, just as we all know why Kamala will almost certainly select a white male as her running mate. This is how it works.

That's hilarious!

Her husband is the same age as her so you are digging deep into her past to have a pop!
No. Not a reasonable assumption at all. Desperation from you!

Fine by me.

Personally, I'd love it if Pete Buttegieg was her VP but that might be one step too far for the American people

I don’t see that her husband’s age has any relevance. She’s got to her position of power. She doesn’t need to fuck old men anymore.

No I don’t think this will happen. The fact that he’s openly gay would lose any votes him being white and male (and ex-armed forces!) would gain.
