Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

No, that is the case. As I said, people can disagree about the interpretation of a law, or whether a past case is applicable, but SCOTUS opinions (and dissents) all cite laws and cases. I’m currently a SAHM, but I’m also a licensed attorney in my state. Every year, I attend an all-day seminar about that year’s SCOTUS decisions, with legal experts laying out what various sides argued before the court and why the court ruled the way it did. There is always, always a reason involving other laws, past cases, past legal history, the Constitution, et cetera. The Supreme Court never issues opinions without extensive write-ups on why they reached their decision.

There is no US law or case history that would support the position of president being replaced by an unelected dictator who gets to rule for life.

That would be the same here you look at past cases to refer judgments.

You might want to step away from Fox News propaganda for a minute or two? Or are you just following their playbook, that the more times you repeat something the greater the odds of convincing the gullible? Becuse this is so easily fact checked, it makes me suspect the latter.

Harris had a brief relationship with Willie Brown that ended in 1995. Are you seriously suggesting she's coasting on that nearly 30 years later.

Well said

Trump just wants all NATO nations to contribute their required 2% GDP to fund NATO which they weren’t doing before. He was unhappy that US was contributing more than their fair share.

Nah.

"You need to understand that if Europe is under attack, we will never come to help you and to support you. And by the way, Nato is dead. And we will leave, we will quit Nato."

Trump to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

America’s adversaries will take advantage when a president is perceived as weak. I rest my case.

There's also no us law or case law that supports presidential immunity (in fact, the opposite (Nixon v. Fitzgerald).

It wouldn't need to go to a court. Absolute criminal immunity for official acts under core constitutional powers and presumptive immunity for other official acts certainly give pretty good cover to someone in the oval office looking to cancel an election.

If your legal experts were taking the position that the immunity decision was anything other than the supreme court effectively amending the constitution without ratification, they need some CLE.

Also a lawyer.

There wasn’t US law or case law, but SCOTUS - rightly or wrongly - cited the Constitution. As I said, “There is always, always a reason involving other laws, past cases, past legal history, the Constitution, et cetera. The Supreme Court never issues opinions without extensive write-ups on why they reached their decision.” [second emphasis added] Previous posters were acting like SCOTUS has stopped citing law in their rulings, which isn’t true.

I haven’t been to the SCOTUS decision seminar yet this year, but the presenters don’t take sides on the cases. It’s basically, “Side A argued this. Side B argued that. The majority ruled for [Side A or B], and this is what they cited. This is what the dissent[s] argued.”

”Absolute criminal immunity for official acts under core constitutional powers and presumptive immunity for other official acts certainly give pretty good cover to someone in the oval office looking to cancel an election” - not a ConLaw expert by any stretch, but POTUS does not have the core constitutional power to determine when an election takes place. Congress sets the date of elections, and presidential elections are conducted by the individual states. How, in your view, would Trump be able to cancel elections?

It's not dislike, but she's not very bright, has failed spectacularly as VP in the 2 remits she was given and is in no way suited to being President

On what grounds is the former Attorney General of California and the Senator widely acknowledged to have been the most effective questioner of Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court ‘not very bright’?

Former President Trump instructed the Republicans in Congress to vote against the best bipartisan solution to the immigrant crisis yet devised, so that he could continue to raise hell about the crisis. Hardly the fault of Biden or Harris.

You made this claim so give us evidence

Justcallmebebes · 02/08/2024 22:39

Yes, look into why she climbed the ladder. Far more of who she knew and slept with rather than what she knew

This is repulsive. For one thing, KH has been married to a lawyer in private practice, not involved in politics, for quite a while. To quote the meme on DJT, this is just plain weird

There's also the Christian vote to consider, I was listening to a podcast today where a young Christian woman (American) said Kamala mustn't win and went on about her childlessness. It was dreadful. Apparently it's because Trump is anti-abortion and that's the main reason why many Christians there are supporting him.

That's interesting, I'm trying to get my head round why people would vote for Trump and that makes sense.
I think I'm getting more liberal in my old age, I can see that stance taking root more with me when I was younger.
I was brought up Christian, with values of no kids before marriage for example.
I'd have been more "don't agree with abortion" back then, just don't have any kids, use protection!
Now older I realise that it's not always that easy for a myriad of reasons.
I think he has no clue, and also discriminates/alienates people.
Would much rather someone more tolerant of others "different" to themselves was in charge.

Absolutely agree , repulsive and vitriol to be expected, they are like school children. Behaviour is appalling and hostile.

EconomyClassRockstar · 03/08/2024 01:47

All I know, as someone who lives in the US and can actually vote in this election, is that there was a very silent majority who didn't vote for Trump in 2020. Those people are still there but getting flogged with gas prices and high grocery bills and high house prices, just like the UK. My hope is that Kamala chooses the right VP running mate and those people stick to their 2020 guns. And Gen Z, the first generation to have school shootings as an actual worry in their minds on a daily basis, get out and vote also. And then, I'll be good with whatever happens.
