Long standing close friend came round for dinner and we were nattering away, and she just mentioned off hand in the conversation that she had voted Reform. i am really shocked. We don't discuss politics much. But I would have guessed lib dems or labour. I love her dearly. But I do wonder if I should think about her differently now, or just carry on as before

YANBU - She is not such a good person as I thought all these years
YABU-its all fine

There is no point in a discussion here. It just seems to be about name calling.
We can all be friends with who we want to be, it is not up to random strangers on the internet to tell us who we should be friends with.
And no I will not be friends with anyone who voted Reform UK.

So that a nope you cannot provide proof of you accusations, so you chose not to discuss it if we won't take what you say as fact and full truth. Okay, maybe some of us would like to see the source of your claims.

Unfortunately you appear to be from the trial by social media generation and look how many stars that worked out well for, not heard of the #bekind hash tag then or does it only work when you agree with someone's viewpoint.

How would you know who your friends voted for unless you asked them. I never ask people who they vote for, it's none of my business. I'm probably friends with people from all the parties, I really have no idea, so many other things to talk about.

AvrielFinch · 01/08/2024 14:26

None of my friends would vote for Reform UK in a million years. I know.

Why do you vet all your friends? Id hate to like a life where i despise anyone who does not share my views or political allegiances.

All i can suggest that breeds intolerance and created a little bubble for you to live in with your own personal echo chamber very enlightening.

Because I know that none of my friends have the kind of values that would ever lead them to even consider voting Reform.

I understand that people might not know much about the values of casual acquaintances, but surely most people have a reasonably good idea of who their friends are and what's important to them?

lovelysunshine22 · 01/08/2024 14:30

If my friends dared to question me on my politics they would get told to fuck off! I can't imagine being so narrow minded that i judged my friendships on how people vote 🙄

But how could you be friends with someone if you didn't consider them to be a nice person with values that you share? Why would you want to spend time with someone that you didn't like?

But that's just it, you don't know unless you talk politics with every friend you have, or you have a very small number of friends.

So you would not be friends with someone who is concerned with the current level of illegal immigration and the negative impact this has on communities?

Fluufer · 01/08/2024 14:35

I can't fathom how many people think having such shallow superficial friendships is a virtue. How can you not know or care what your friends fundamental values are? Do you have no standards for whom you associate with?

Elbone · 01/08/2024 14:20

Are you asking me if I have witnessed racism ever?
or are you asking me if I’ve witnessed politicians being racist?
or are you asking me whether I’ve seen reform’s racist policies?

I will draw similarities where I see them. Stating millions of people are “bigots” because they’re racist/ transphobes without any evidence is concerning to me.

OK, so then no racism in Farage. Instances posted with links on previous pages, lots of sources available. Fucking depressing. So much stirring and manoeuvring to make this “acceptable”. I’ll retire to my bubble and spend time with people I like.

swimsong · 01/08/2024 14:37

Elbone · 01/08/2024 13:30

Could you give examples?

Talk to any Reform candidate in private.

Actually i'm intelligent enough to understand that everyone i meet have different life experiences from every angle. No two are the same and if they have a strong grievance to one thing or another there is a very definite reason or experience for it.

I do not judge them I have not walked in their shoes or lived their lives. But if they can provide me of some facts as to why they are right and i am wrong i will consider it.

I may live in an area that multiculturalism is not working and have views on that but it does not mean I cannot be friends from other cultures as I certainly do or in areas where it does work. So thats difference between intolerance and dog whistling that predominantly come from the left.

So when some one like claims to judge people on who they voted for as one homogenous group then you need to back it up with some real facts, other wise you are no different from the people you dislike.

Bellsandthistle · 01/08/2024 14:39

If I had a friend who doubted whether I was a good person or not based on who I voted for, we would no longer be friends.

Eh? What on earth do you talk about when you're with a friend.

I spent a lovely day out with a friend last week, not once did politics come into it.

I’m asking for specific examples of Reform policies being racist. Please.

As it happens, I do have a couple of friends who have concerns about immigration and how it has been managed. However, they are not racist and wouldn't dream of voting for Reform.

Stephy1886 · 01/08/2024 14:40

Really how has he got a court order over his head or found guilty in a court of law?

Which policies of reform’s are racist?

So again where are your facts and links please, some credible direct source that all Reform voters are racist or Reform is?

If Reform are how are they still an official part and not faced sanctions, where is the investigation into their racist acts as would be illegal in this country?

They are legitimate government candidates now.

Eh? What on earth do you talk about when you're with a friend.

I spent a lovely day out with a friend last week, not once did politics come into it.

Not ever? For years and years you don't ever talk politics, opinions on current affairs, the news? None of it ever pops up ever? You have no idea your friends stance on core issues such as race, women's rights, climate change?
You don't have to pin them down and demand to know who they vote for. If you're really never talking about any of that stuff ever, then yes, I would say that's a very superficial friendship and you don't really know them.

Bellsandthistle · 01/08/2024 14:45

These are the same people who were shocked with the Brexit referendum results.
Completely out of touch with reality and of the opinion that nice, normal folk would NEVER vote that way. 🙄

Yes, well I would consider a vote for Nigel Farage a personal attack. So good riddance I guess.
