I just don't use it in cooking (use many other spices and herbs though).
I threw out a quite dusty packet 10years out of date recently.

relative is visiting and has offered to cook and asked for the pepper.

aibu not to buy any?

what are the bets that my relative will buy us a pepper shaker?

I think its quite unusual not to have black pepper and a grinder but I don't think anyone has used white pepper since 1988

I bought some recently to deter the puppy from eating, door architraves, skirtings, rugs, stair runners and plastered walls. 🙄

We have white pepper for use in Asian recipes 😁

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime Tbf you can’t really compare serving someone who is allergic and will be ill from the food to someone just not liking it.

Waffle78 · 31/07/2024 20:09

I love pepper I buy the pre filled pepper mills from home bargains or b&M.

It’s up to you OP but I think you’re missing out. Fresh black pepper is gorgeous!

Totally agree with this. Get some Telicherry pepper and grind over your food. It takes the whole meal to another level.

The best pepper!

I use white pepper to season the veg when I do a roast.

There are recipes which use white pepper. I use it in a cucumber and yogurt dish where you don't want black pepper showing.

Bertsmum22 · 31/07/2024 20:19

Because a guest is cooking at it costs £1. Why all the drama?!

Halfheadhighlights · 31/07/2024 20:21

Just buy a small cheap pepper grinder and give it to your guest when they leave

Supermacs · 31/07/2024 20:23

YANBU

LlynTegid · 31/07/2024 20:23

I don't have it either.

White pepper is fantastic in mashed potatoes and I prefer it in scrambled eggs too.

Yep, me too, in mash, white sauces (fish pie) and scrambled eggs. I use it more than black pepper, but I love black pepper too.

the80sweregreat · 31/07/2024 20:25

White pepper is ace and livens up most meals and soups . I like black pepper too.
It's ace.

White pepper is everything. White pepper on buttery Swede, divine . Black pepper I can take or leave but for a quid it’s good to have some.

I used it today. It's useful in e.g. white sauces where you don't want little black specks.

How can you not use black pepper? It's so versatile, useful, lasts ages and cost about 40p. I'd be very surprised to find it wasn't in someone's cupboard.

Edited

Not in ours. DH hates it, I can take or leave it so we don't use it in cooking, no one wants it on their dinner and we don't miss it.

Occasionally my dad likes it on beans on toast, but he wouldn't care if it wasn't there.

Waste of money, even if it is only 40p, and a waste of pepper for us to buy it.

poetryandwine · 31/07/2024 20:30

If a guest offers to cook for me, I am happy to provide for their cooking needs within reason. Why would you not spend about £1 on a disposable black pepper mill so someone could cook for you?

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime Tbf you can’t really compare serving someone who is allergic and will be ill from the food to someone just not liking it.

I can, and I did. I prefer to be able to eat a meal if it has been cooked for me in my own house, and if it has pepper in it then I will have to go and boil an egg for myself unless I want to feel sick for the rest of the evening.

There is something hideously controlling about anyone who cooks for their host without consulting his or her preferences. "You will eat this and pretend to like it so you don't seem rude" seems pretty rude on the part of the person doing the cooking, to me.

Similarly I have a friend who dislikes onions, so I don't cook a dish with onions in it if he is coming for a meal. Isn't giving people what they like to eat rather than something they dislike just basic politeness?

Delphiniumandlupins · 31/07/2024 20:37

How can you eat any form of cooked egg without pepper?

I like pepper but not on eggs!

Shushquite · 31/07/2024 20:40

I would buy it and give it to the guest to take home.

A great deal more easily than I can eat one with pepper. There is a lot less choking, gagging and going to get a glass of milk to try to get rid of the taste if there is no pepper involved.

YANBU. Every house is different. You’ll never find sugar and onions in my house. It’s just not something we use. Even if it’s 1p I wouldn’t buy them as I don’t need them.

I can't imagine a world in which a recipe for dinner doesn't start: First dice an onion. Literally, six days a week, I start dinner by dicing an onion.

The fact you said fragrant put me right of I don't want my food to taste fragrant. I don't like Indian food either. I'd be fuming if someone put oregano on my pizza, I want to taste the pizza if I wanted to taste oregano I eat oregano

Pizza base sauce almost always has a good deal of oregano. It sounds like you just don't know how to cook
