To think he shouldn't have been paid in full while off long term. As its more like being self employed.
But mainly cos it was 475k upwards of our TV licence money!
Another example is when a famous radio presenter s decide to go off for an extended break to film another show or something. Surely they don't get normal pay when they have extra weeks off not on air!!

' My abiding memory of Edwards will always be the unscripted hours he spent broadcasting the day of the Queen’s death. It was impeccable journalism at its finest, the tone was perfect for the occasion. That was as much his true self as his other behaviour. Human beings are complex and multi faceted'

Astonishing that anyone would think appropriate to write such stuff. 'Impeccable journalism' my arse he was reading a script that is it.

'Human beings are complex'. Wtaf. He views child abuse images, he is a depraved disgusting perv. Not matter how simply darling his presenting after the Queen’s death was.

He was a pillar of the church too and proud father of 5 children in a long term marriage.
He could have been happy yet he chose a grubby secret life that was ways high risk of discovery due to his high profile.
Why do some people choose to live like this? Is it for the thrill? I have no idea.

This. Absolutely.
His poor wife and family.

There was no script to read. Yes human beings are complex, it’s very sad that some people are unable to acknowledge that.

cathyandclaire · 01/08/2024 18:42

He was a good journalist in the same way as Michael Jackson was a good songwriter and performer- but I find it difficult to see the good stuff in the light of the bad.

Ilovetowander · 01/08/2024 18:45

I think it is sad, but I believe that just because a person does some things that are wrong we should still acknowledge the things they did right. I believe that people are complex and not everything is black and white. So yes HW is a good journalist and presenter and was skilled at that.

Yes he was. Saying anything else is ridiculous.

All well and good now he's pleaded guilty but at the time, innocent until proven guilty and all that. Hindsight is wonderful.

Imagine getting accused of something you didn't do (not him of course hes pleaded guilty) and then getting sacked, then being found not guilty, or not even charged. You'd be well peed off.

westisbest1982 · 01/08/2024 18:55

Alex Williams’s mother and stepfather were unaware of his conviction, according to The Times. I just can’t get over that he didn’t go to prison. I know prisons are overpopulated, but it feels like he got off scot free.

Dylan Jones has said he has revised his opinions of Edwards since that lunch six years ago. There are plenty of weird, camp and contrary people in the world who lead exemplary lives.

My abiding memory of Edwards will always be the unscripted hours he spent
broadcasting the day of the Queen’s death. It was impeccable journalism at its finest, the tone was perfect for the occasion. That was as much his true self as his other behaviour. Human beings are complex and multi faceted. I feel desperately sorry for the victims here, for Edwards’ family and sad for that talented journalist who was betrayed by the baser side of himself.

"My abiding memory of Fred West will always be the 18+ hours he spent non-stop sorting out my granny's garden. It was impeccable tradesmanship at its finest, he even did it at a considerably reduced rate. That was as much his true self as his other behaviour. Human beings are complex and multi faceted."

Lest we forget that Peter Sutcliffe was a great trucker too or that Dennis Nilsen was great at helping the unemployed find work...

I spent this morning following some of the links someone left on another thread. I discovered there is very good help available for people who are addicted to his particular...tastes. Full confidentiality given. And he had plenty of money to get a very well trained specialist therapist.

There must of been a point at which he felt he was going too far but he didn't seek help.

WoosMama13 · 01/08/2024 19:00

His own wife was the whistleblower. A spouse wouldn't do that unless they really knew their partner was guilty.
Back then, it should have been no pay rise until a decision was made. He hadn't been proven to be anything negative and we know what lies people will set up, especially to those in the public eye.
Now though, he should pay the lot back as he accepted it, knowing he was guilty. The BBC also knew and still protected him and paid him with our licence fee.
A lot of people (myself included) felt sorry for him when he took a break due to his mental health. In reality all this was going on.

From a comment by the Head of the National Crime Agency about his disappointment that 80% of paedophiles who view CSAM don't get a custodial sentence- I sadly get the feeling that even if the prisons weren't overpopulated at the moment, Alex Williams would've likely still had a fairly good chance of not being carted off to a cell.

Anyone else think that Edwards' supplier looks a little like a young HE? Did he identify with him when he picked him out on SM/ wherever?

@Wetherspoons I don’t see a contradiction in pointing out that abusers, killers, predators etc can also be talented, helpful, community minded, serious or whatever other word.

Painting them as black and white, only good or only bad makes it easier for people like HE or Rolf Harris to hide in plain sight.

People are complex. People like Huw Edwards more so. To have lived that public life for so long, been at the top of his journalistic game, yet doing what he was in private is complex - I couldn’t have done it.

To expose people like this at the earliest opportunity we need to admit that it can be that pillar of the community, it can be that talented journo, it can be the man who did the great job on your granny’s garden. Predators don’t come in a box marked ‘bad’. How many victims have not been believed or not come forward because the abuser was not as simple as as creepy weirdo.

Vikina · 01/08/2024 19:18

I consider myself fairly streetwise. When women on here swear blind that their husbands wouldn't be unfaithful I roll my eyes. But I was blindsided by this. This is the man who told us our Queen was dead (a moment now forever tainted). A brilliant presenter and journalist. An absolutely disgusting human being. He deserves everything coming to him.

'Lest we forget that Peter Sutcliffe was a great trucker too or that Dennis Nilsen was great at helping the unemployed find work.'

Ah yes, those lovely charming men. I bet Sutcliffe could've done a lovely commentary following the Queen’s death too. Such complex multifaceted folk! So sad that they were 'betrayed by the basest side of themslves' or some such twaddle.

Honestly how anyone can be Huw's desperate apologist is beyond me.

There was no apology for his behaviour. It was beyond me that anyone could be an apologist for Partygate but some people managed it.

It might be to complex for you, some people like to see the world in black and white. It’s less complicated this way.

Noone is apologising for what he has done. We all understand it’s unforgivable.

Ok no apology just a load of very creepy adulation. 'As much his true self as his other behaviour'. His other behaviour. What the viewing child sexual abuse behaviour?!

No idea what party gate has to do with the thread hun. Do try to keep on track.

Hmm1234 · 01/08/2024 19:35

vile vile man when are these entertainment industry scandals going to stop!? To think he was sending those messages after the jimmy saville scandal got exposed just shows how sick in the head these types of people are. They just can’t help themselves
