To think he shouldn't have been paid in full while off long term. As its more like being self employed.
But mainly cos it was 475k upwards of our TV licence money!
Another example is when a famous radio presenter s decide to go off for an extended break to film another show or something. Surely they don't get normal pay when they have extra weeks off not on air!!

If your happy to pay your licence fee ( many people I know who you might consider rich dont) then why care how it gets divided up? I can't belive a news reader gets paid so much ( more than the PM?) But fundamentally if I was really angry about it I'd live without the BBC. There's hundreds of channels out there.

Lucy Letby was arrested in July 3018 and was paid her full salary for the next 2 1/2 years.

Gettingbysomehow · 31/07/2024 10:16

He was a pillar of the church too and proud father of 5 children in a long term marriage.
He could have been happy yet he chose a grubby secret life that was ways high risk of discovery due to his high profile.
Why do some people choose to live like this? Is it for the thrill? I have no idea.

Theremedy · 31/07/2024 10:16

He’s pled guilty so I presume we can talk about this pedophile now?

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 31/07/2024 10:16

Theres no if, he pleaded guilty in court

I think it does matter how much it is as its a crazy high level of money. Our money .
Should be certain rules. As I think we would all survive on half of say 500k while suspended... 🙄
We pay for it.

But what if he was a cleaner inside broadcasting house on £16k? What then?

Do you not see the point that the salary itself doesn't matter, it's due process that every employee is entitled to under law?

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 31/07/2024 10:18

He has pleaded guilty

StripedPiggy · 31/07/2024 10:19

Edwards has pleaded guilty to making indecent images. Source : BBC News. He is now a convicted sex offender.

Britain’s most senior & respected broadcaster has destroyed his life, his career & his marriage. What an absolute disaster for his family and, of course, for the victim. An extraordinary fall for the man entrusted with announcing the results of General Elections and the death of the Queen.

Yes I would imagine so.
I hope he gets a custodial sentence.

I bet he's been doing dodgy stuff for years and years.

This happens in most workplaces, our county police CC was paid his very high salary for months before being sacked for gross misconduct.

crumblingschools · 31/07/2024 10:22

At least he had the decency to plead guilty.

halava · 31/07/2024 10:23

He was caught, it's those who aren't I worry about, and they walk among us as we speak.

ThePoshUns · 31/07/2024 10:23

He's pleaded guilty today, there won't be a trial. It is done. All that remains is sentencing.
Therefore it can be talked about. HTH.

In typical jobs, you will get paid leave. He was under medical care for a while and putting aside what has now come out, people are entitled to sick leave. As for ‘working for another show’, they’re still employees of the BBC and production companies can overlap.

Well, yeah. He was trying to play the mental health card. For clarity l completely believe in people having mental health issues, plus them receiving the right assessment and treatment. But not for people using it to duck the repercussions of their behaviour and blaming it on their mental health

Namechangejust · 31/07/2024 10:25

Feeling quite sad about this for everyone concerned .

ConstitutionHill · 31/07/2024 10:25

Do we know the ages of the victims? I can't see to find them. Presumably they must have been aged 15 or under. Are we talking about 15 yr olds which is bad enough or are we talking younger?

ThePoshUns · 31/07/2024 10:26

He had no option but to plead guilty. The images were on his phone, he downloaded them, they didn't get there by magic.
He will get credit for pleading guilty.
I doubt very much he will get a custodial sentence.
As of today he is a registered sex offender and as such will have to attend his local police station to record himself as such.

pyjamatimes · 31/07/2024 10:27

Aquarius1234 · 31/07/2024 09:58

BBC shouldn't pay the same amount when a presenter is having a long holiday or doing another gig for example 2 / 3 months.
BBC news presenters earn too much anyway.

Do they? I bet you couldn’t do his job.

brunettemic · 31/07/2024 10:27

You’re mixing up a moral argument with the legalities of his contract. Whatever yours if anyone else’s opinions on it might be are irrelevant if his contract says otherwise.

I’m a therapist. When I was working in the nhs I had several clients who were feeling depressed/suicidal following a knock at the door from police regarding their online activities.

I can imagine anyone in that situation would feel genuinely incredibly distressed, but it’s not the same thing as having a mental illness as such.

Genevieva · 31/07/2024 10:32

Most employers don’t offer a full year of full pay. Three to six months is fairly typical. He doesn’t have cancer or a life-limiting illness. He is off on stress / depression leave. Given the circumstances surrounding his departure, I’d say his stress and depression are self-inflicted consequences of his nefarious behaviour and he should not have been signed off sick at all. Instead, the BBC should have suspended him pending investigation, then sacked him a month later. The BBC has form for elevating paedophiles and protecting their public image. About time it had to answer some questions.

WickieRoy · 31/07/2024 10:34

It may seem crazy that someone with his wealth and the seriousness of the case was paid, but remember those same legal protections would allow you to put food on the table if you were falsely accused at work.
