I mean how long does it take to write son, daughter, husband? And they're not always darling or dear are they? TBH. My personal bug bears are LOL, IMHO and, most of all, worst of all. AF! Just say period for god's sake! What are we, floral apron wearing, valium munchers, living in middle america in the 1950's?

OP posts:
AbbeyA · 14/04/2008 18:05

I have just had to look up AF and BD-having seen what they mean I won't be using them-whoever thought them up!

zippitippitoes · 14/04/2008 18:17

i never say af lol

but i do say plenty of others

x babe

ChicaLovesHerLocalGreengrocer · 14/04/2008 19:56

Am I the only one who, while driving along in the car alone, or pondering a conversation they had the day before, slips into 'so dh said xxx, and db said y'.

I must stress this is only in my head, (for now), but it can't be long before I actually come out and say it!

BTW DH thinks it's hilarious, and if I leave MN on screen while I go to the loo/get a cup of tea/ put on my pjs, he'll pretend to post about 'his DW who can't separate RL from MN'.

halogen · 14/04/2008 19:58

AF and BD are vile beyond belief. Maybe we could cut out a letter and use S for sex? I admit to finding DD, DH, DS a bit cutesy even though I too love my family. I rather like YANBU etc, though. And FFS, IMHO and so on do save a lot of typing!

bran · 14/04/2008 20:08

I agree with purpleduck that acronyms are an integral and ancient part of our language (by ancient I mean they were used before anyone now living was born). Imagine if everyone who had multiple degrees and qualifications had to list them out in full. There are plenty of companies who are better known by their acronym than by their full name.

Dislike acronyms by all means, but it would be awkward to live without them IMO, so you might as well learn to tolerate other people using them even if you don't yourself.

AbbeyA · 15/04/2008 07:43

I agree with lucicle that some are quite useful like YANBU and MIL which saves a lot of typing. I have just about got used to the DD, DC etc but they still make me cringe a bit, I would much prefer to write son. I really don't like SAHM or WOHM, BF or FF because it divides people into 2 camps, it is no wonder that the subjects then cause a lot of animosity. I couldn't ever bring myself to use BD! Did someone deliberately sit down and make them up or did they naturally evolve?

zippitippitoes · 15/04/2008 07:52

but if you would prefer to write son then write it lol

its not compuslory

have your own style babes

Acronyms have been useful on the net for years, long before mumsnet.

Clearly you have never used usenet.

If you are at all unsure of what things mean use www.acronymfinder.com/

berolina · 15/04/2008 08:02

On the subject of euphemisms for 'period' - dh grew up in the former GDR, where the term of choice was apparently 'a visitor from Moscow'.

zippitippitoes · 15/04/2008 08:04

lol at visitor from moscow

i shall try that on bf next time

AbbeyA · 15/04/2008 08:06

I have looked them up. I feel that if you come on a board then you have to abide by the etiquette of the board-you can't come on and expect people to change because you don't like it, so therefore I will continue to use DS etc. I just cringe a bit and use them and wouldn't have mentioned it-it was just nice to know from the opening post that I am not the only one! I am hopeless at texting-my messages are very different from my DS's texts!!

zippitippitoes · 15/04/2008 08:07

but abbey on mn honestly its not etiquette in that sense to use them its just convenience no one will mind if you preer son and daughter and husand partner or whatever it will just be the way you post

really go for it
x

AbbeyA · 15/04/2008 08:28

Thanks zippitippitoes-the whole word creeps in occasionally but I am getting used to it. The problem is that I am in danger of using them elsewhere-I start writing DC and have to think 'wrong board' and delete!

zippitippitoes · 15/04/2008 08:29

we are an independent bunch of tossers here

so individuality is appreciated

Someone explain baby dust to me then please? If BD is babydancing?

Text speak is worse than acronyms surely?

OracleInaCoracle · 15/04/2008 11:55

i fecking hate babydust. makes me sneeze

mrz · 15/04/2008 18:09

I really don't know why people can't just type in full.

Saturn74 · 15/04/2008 18:15

SWAPSI

Janni · 15/04/2008 18:20

I behate the invention of new verbs in thread titles {grin]

OP - you just need to stick around a bit longer and it will become second nature.

Janni · 15/04/2008 18:25

I also hate it when you try to do a smiley and it goes wrong.

I'm delighted though, to finally know what AF stands for!

AbbeyA · 15/04/2008 18:55

The smileys are very misleading-someone was quite rude to me (I thought)but I didn't realise that it was followed by a grin! It looks distinctly unpleasant-more like a leer!

gigglewitch · 15/04/2008 19:05

YABU IMO

sorry! use what you want, write in full what you want, stick around and you will soon be typing martian-like letters as the rest of us.
