I mean how long does it take to write son, daughter, husband? And they're not always darling or dear are they? TBH. My personal bug bears are LOL, IMHO and, most of all, worst of all. AF! Just say period for god's sake! What are we, floral apron wearing, valium munchers, living in middle america in the 1950's?

Auntie Flo? Who the f says that? Madness

Maybe if we can't say period we can use textspeak - f u cn rd ths u wl no i am n my priod an nd tmpx. Or something.

tigers, I use XP cos he's not dear but I really hate OH. Other half? So that makes me less whole now i'm single huh? See, I'm irrational about it .

ecoworrier · 14/04/2008 12:42

Going against the flow here, just for a change. I agree 100% with BucketandSpade. I totally dislike all the acronyms and never use them. I actually find they disrupt the flow of what I'm reading. One or two in a post isn't so bad, but some posts are almost nothing but acronyms.

It's nothing to do with not knowing what they mean, I've used sites such as this one for many many years. I don't agree with whoever said if you use lots of sites like this one you're going to have to start using acronyms too. So it's not always a case of being a newcomer, although it does make me smile sometimes whenever someone who doesn't like/use the 'in' acronyms is accused of being a newcomer or a technophobe. I can assure you, I'm neither.

'cutesy' and 'inane' does sort of sum it up, although cutesy also isn't a word I'd really use. Childish was the phrase that always sprung to mind when I first came across all the acronyms.

By the way, I'm not expecting everyone to change. I'm just answering the question, so BucketandSpade, no, I don't think you are being unreasonable!

Ah, yes, thanks Rusty.

That is really rather hilarious. I've just been reading it. Finally worked out what it was all about...

Yup, give me MN anyway over that lot, if it is really that bad on the 'other' site.

Best go.
Shock horror, I actually have children to look after!!

ecoworrier · 14/04/2008 12:45

Just skim-read the thread again - do people really 'slip' into using the acronyms in real life?

Now that really is worrying...!

AbbeyA · 14/04/2008 12:58

YANBU -I hate them but feel that if you join a board you have to go with the flow or decide not to join in-it isn't fair to say I will post but ignore the acronyms. I specially can't stand all the DH, DP, DC etc.I can't bring myself to use the smileys, the big grin is the one that I have the most trouble with-it doesn't look in the least friendly!

SueBaroo · 14/04/2008 14:20

Completely about AF. Never heard that before in my life, and it's just wierd. 'Got the decorators in' always made me laugh, so I don't mind that at all.

Acronyms are time-savers, simple as that. Overuse is tedious, but here and there is fine. I use roffle here and elsewhere and even in real life conversation. It's a great word.

And smileys are extremely useful in written, online conversation where it's very easy to misunderstand the tone of something, especially on a 'chatty' site like MN.

happens to be my favourite smiley ever, because I pull that face all the time.

BucketandSpade · 14/04/2008 14:49

Ecoworrier, yes, childish. That's what I meant. Just wondering...are male posters as inclined to use the whole DH, DC, DD, smiley face thing? It's just that it strikes me as being steryotypically girly and female. I know it's meant to be chatty, and the intimacy on Mumsnet is wonderful, but it sometimes feels (don't shoot me) a bit purposely dumbed down. I could be over analysing.

OP posts:
Oblomov · 14/04/2008 14:54

Yes the males posters do it too. Go onto the dadsnet section and take a look for yourself.

SueBaroo · 14/04/2008 14:55

Oh goodness, one of the geek forums I frequent is awash with male posters acronyming themselves into a stupor.

I, er, don't go there very much.

jojosmaman · 14/04/2008 15:04

I hate AF and BD with a passion! Both are used profusely on cutesy other forums (not just netmums) and a post may go something like this..

..so I am cd14 and jumped on dh last nite for bd and then noticed today i had some xtra ewcm, does this mean I am PG? Af due cd 28 but do ya think I should POAS?..

I don't use acronyms in RL but I sometimes say to DP something like "it was so funny I lolled" in an ironic kind of way. He goes on a manly forum and I often peek at it when he is on the lap top and they LOL, LMAO, IMO quite a bit but don't DW, DP etc.

I actually asked him last night if people just post about football stuff or does anyone come on and ask about lumps on their balls or if they are being unreasonable for shouting at the kids and he just looked at me like this

HairyToe · 14/04/2008 15:44

Ok I have to say I have used all the aforementioned acronyms and to start with didn't know what BD and AF stood for - just worked them out in context. As somebody new to a site and in some cases looking for help and advice I thought it was only polite to use the terms which people on those threads seemed to use. Now I tend to mirror the people I'm 'talking' to. Sometimes I say sex and period and sometimes BD and AF depening on what the others on the thread are using.

Dh,dp,ds1,dd2 - regardless of what the inital 'd' stands for the use of these terms does help with clarity - particularly with posts from people with large familes. Constantly referring to son number 1, eldest daughter, youngest son etc. would get confusing surely?

Oh and I only ever use lol if i really have laughed out loud. Its always nice to have your comedy appreciated surely

Flynnie · 14/04/2008 16:29

Actually did lol at that jojosmaman.
Also aibu to find 'manly forum' rather sweet. Dh often asks rather wistfully if there is a dadsnet!

oohh 3 acronyms in 1 post

OracleInaCoracle · 14/04/2008 16:35

i dont mind dd, ds, dh or dp but i refuse to use af and bd (no mean feat for someone who lives in conception) its not auntie fecking flo, its my period. its crap and giving it a twee name doesnt make it any less crap. and i dont babydance (ffs, sounds like some bizarre ritual) i have sex.

lulumama · 14/04/2008 16:36

don;t you make sweet lurve, lissie?

purpleduck · 14/04/2008 16:38

My husband now calls me DW at times

he doesn't mumsnet, but thinks the whole thing is funny

BTW, I think there are lots of acronyms EVERYWHERE in England
DVLA
DSA
LEA
LA
etc etc

And don't gt me started on the army!

OracleInaCoracle · 14/04/2008 16:40

pmsl lulu (actually nearly did, bladders still a bit weak ) no we do not. we sometimes shag. occasionally hump and very rrely make the beast with two backs....

lulumama · 14/04/2008 16:53

WorzselMummage · 14/04/2008 17:15

OracleInaCoracle · 14/04/2008 17:18

i dunno worzsel, but i never invite her, she never gives me any bon bons, and she makes a fecking mess!

WorzselMummage · 14/04/2008 17:23

She's a bitch isnt she

an FB in fact..

OracleInaCoracle · 14/04/2008 17:36

i know, next time im just not opening the door...

MsSparkle · 14/04/2008 17:40

I always thought DD, DH, DW etc were not actually supposed to be serious but more jokey. Calling your husband darling husband is more hummourous than anything in my opinion.

Aunt flo is also humerous to me and again i don't think it's supposed to be serious. I personally hate the word 'period.'

Perhaps some sense of humours wouldn't go amiss on MN at the moment

WorzselMummage · 14/04/2008 17:42
