Got sent worrying WhatsApp message

I don’t know why I feel weirded out, but today I got a message on WhatsApp from an ex colleague, the message was a 2 minute long blank video where there was just a bunch of noise. Followed by a message that just said “p#*”

I haven’t had a message from this person in nearly 2 years, what should I make of this?

My thing is, if they picked dialled me how would that be easy being that they haven’t messaged me in 2 years

Very easy. I pocket dialled my dad last week. He died in 2019

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 28/07/2024 19:09

Yes, definitely a pocket dial. Strange things happen with my smartphone ... My daughter was at our house the other week, and when I picked up my phone to just have a look at what the temperature was, it was on my camera and it went off and took a picture of her with our cat.

She absolutely 100% percent swore that I had deliberately papped her - and was furious because she had messy hair and no makeup on. But I genuinely didn't know it was on camera and I certainly never took the picture. Definitely haunted my camera is! 😬

Yep....hence the person calling themselves a name at the end.

sweatervest · 28/07/2024 19:14

larry david calls it a butt dial. which has nothing to do with a decent answer for your question.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 28/07/2024 19:17

Just message back and ask if everything is alright you haven't heard from them for ages?

I would imagine they've just pocket dialled you and it's nothing to worry about.

PCRyanPilkington · 28/07/2024 19:19

Very very easy to do this; I butt dialed the ex of a close friend - it had been a horrible break-up several years prior, and they were surprised/horrified to 'hear' from me. But the butt wants what the butt wants.

YourWildAmberSloth · 28/07/2024 19:20

Delete and forget it, unless it happens again.

Would you LIKE it to be more significant an event than a butt dial?

bonzaitree · 28/07/2024 19:30

Defo a butt dial. They will probs be mortified when they find out!

Absolute pocket call. Either whilst in their pocket, it scrolled down the bottom messages whilst in their pocket and then when the phone couldn’t scroll anymore it started a video.

Or they were stalking your latest WhatsApp profile pic before putting the phone in their pocket.

‘p’ is far right like a scroll would be on the phone.

Do you have any other reason to be concerned?

Choochoo21 · 28/07/2024 19:32

Reply with a ?

I have accidentally phoned 3 people in the past month who I’ve not spoken to in years.
I have knew headphones and somehow they just ring random contacts.
It can be a while before I realise.

So it’s possible to was a butt dial of some sort.

Sounds like you're paranoid your secrets will come out...

BlimminCat · 28/07/2024 19:50

Does no one else’s phone lock? I don’t understand how you can pocket dial these days, the only thing my phone lets me do is use the camera with no access to photos or emergency call when it’s locked, I can’t access WhatsApp for it to accidently do that when it’s locked in my pocket.

My vote is for their kids if they have any. My child years ago accidently phoned 999 while playing with my phone!

OptimismvsRealism · 28/07/2024 19:51

I once pocket liked a photo on Facebook

Unliked it as soon as I saw but they'll have got the notification
And thought me a mad stalker

I never tried to explain

InsensibleMe · 28/07/2024 19:53

This is very sinister. You should call the police immediately. This is just the kind of thing they enjoy getting involved in! They will be very pleased to work with you on this.

MargaretThursday · 28/07/2024 19:54

I have my phone to a toddler a few weeks ago. She was very happily taking photos as far as I knew.

That evening I got a text from a friend saying she'd had a lovely conversation with her, and When I checked, she'd phoned 6 people, one 3 times as well. Apparently she'd left a few random messages, mostly saying hello. None of them were people I normally called.

ThatLilacHedgehog · 28/07/2024 19:54

Am I overthinking?

still think it’s a butt dial!

Kendodd · 28/07/2024 20:01

I misread this as 'God sent a worrying WhatsApp today'
Now that would have been worrying.

gettingolderbutcooler · 28/07/2024 20:02

Delete. Forget. It's that simple.

Is it a female ?

GalileoHumpkins · 28/07/2024 20:18

Is it really that easy to butt dial these days? Don't people have passwords or facial recognition on their phone?

Shan5474 · 28/07/2024 20:18

What is p#*?
What do they know?
