I have changed my name for this, but there is so much negativity and hate towards JSO, Insulate Britain, and ER on these boards, that I really want to risk putting my head above the parapet and saying "WOOOHOO! I AM RIGHT BEHIND YOU!!"

These are wonderful people sacrificing their own liberty and careers to bring attention to their cause - and it really works! There have been huge benefits, so many companies are aware of them, and taking steps to avoid being in the firing line by upping their investments in environmental mitigations.

And the huge amount of attention that insulation got- it is now high up on so many agendas! Why did it take protesters gluing themselves to the road to do it? It should have happened anyway, but it didn't. People had to make that sacrifice, but themselves in danger, lose jobs, careers, liberty, etc, to get results.

People moan about having their days disrupted, etc by JSO, without caring how much their days are going to be disrupted by the climate crisis running out of control.

I have cancer. I couldn't get to a chemo appointment once because of JSO. I 100% support their actions. I think their cause is so much bigger than one person. They are acting to protect millions.

No doubt people will come here and bitch and moan and I don't care really, at least anyone from JSO who is on MN will see my thread title.

You sound like my student dd - talks idealistic BS 98% of the time.

Adviceneeeeded · 27/07/2024 23:20

They aren't protesters op. They are antagonising morons who constantly put people's lives in danger and destroy people's property.

stayathomer · 27/07/2024 23:20

I just don’t get what they want everybody to do- even their name- just stop oil. How do people live without it? The only people who need oil are those that can’t afford anything else, solar panels, underfloor heating etc so essentially they’re targeting the poor?

FitAt50 · 27/07/2024 23:21

They are smug upper middle class idiots and I detest them. They are clearly doing a poor job as everyone I speak to hates them.

NoSnowdrop · 27/07/2024 23:21

incognit · 27/07/2024 21:36

miserable, maybe - regretting, no.

As I said, these are wonderful people, and they were prepared to risk it all.

and my foot you work in a prison, laughing at the idea of prisoners being miserable

Edited

What does “my foot you work in a prison” mean?

You’ve told us you’ve got cancer and don’t mind missing medical appointments. Are we supposed to believe this? People can write anything anonymously online. We’re not stupid. What are you hoping to achieve?

The vitriol on here is really interesting. It almost seems that these activists disgust people more than those who commit violent crimes including sexual assaults (and in fact their sentences were longer). Is this because they are perceived as privileged and posh? Is this because of the disruption to so many people’s lives on the M25? Again I’m genuinely not trying to be facetious, just really interested about why they are so hated when the motivation behind their crimes are very different to those who commit violent crimes. Or do people think that they’re not really motivated by climate breakdown and there is another agenda?

I do not agree they disgust people more than sex offenders. I believe the vitriol is because they are a bunch of upper class twats who know nothing about anything and have no real facts to back their cause. If they do, they are certainly going about it the wrong way.

And furthermore, as I’ve asked the OP but expect no answer, if you really care about climate change, like REALLY CARE and are not just an anarchist in disguise, GO TO THE COUNTRIES THAT ARE DOING THE MOST HARM but of course, they wouldn’t dream of doing this, so in my and I’m sure many others minds they are all fake and don’t believe in the cause as much as they say, just want to virtue signal and nothing more.

YANBU. So many of the negative comments on here are probably from people who have children/grandchildren, but can't see, or just don't care what is happening to the planet their loved ones will inherit. Unfortunately peaceful protest does not work, as no-one really takes any notice of it. Only protest that makes headlines cuts through. Thousands of people protested peacefully in London for nature the other week. How much media coverage did that get? Very little. Fossil fuels are destroying the planet and I applaud JSO for all that they do to raise awareness of that. I'm so grateful that there are people out there who willing to put their liberty on the line for the good of us all.

Patronising much?

Rubbish - we can feel that the JSO mob have got their just desserts while also being appaled and outraged that paedophiles receive suspended sentences and violent criminals do not get sentences that are long enough - and that the new Labour Government is even considering commuting some of those sentences to make room in the prisons.

Unlike the JSO mob, most of us can care about multiple important issues simultaneously.

tobee · 27/07/2024 23:24

Think op's been told to go gone to bed

KnittedCardi · 27/07/2024 23:24

They are just uneducated twats. You can't "just stop.oil". You can invest in alternatives, already being done, but it will take years. Have they ever really researched all the derivatives of oil.production? It is intertwined in everything we do, from washing to cleaning, to clothing, to medicines. There are plant alternatives, but the world is going to have to grow a shit load of plants to clothe and feed everyone. A bit tricky when you've also covered the planet in solar panels.

OhHelloMiss · 27/07/2024 23:25

Howdidtheydothat · 27/07/2024 23:08

Part of the reason that they received such long sentences is the way they behaved in court. They had complete disregard for the judge and rules of court. The press couldn’t report it at the time ( can only do so after the case) but on Radio 4, a journalist told the story. They behaved like absolute morons and the judge had to repeatedly send the jury out while he restored order

Oh wow!! I bet they are totally regretting that now as well! They must be so pissed off with themselves

lunar1 · 27/07/2024 23:26

I'd have run the fuckers over without a second thought if they have been glued to the road between me and the hospital when my son was seriously ill and ended up being resuscitated at 5 years old.

I don't think Cressidas mummy has helped

And it's not an and/or situation.... this thread is about JSO not other offenders ( which we all also have opinions on) maybe start a thread if you care so much?

RienDeRienNon · 27/07/2024 23:28

I don’t support breaking the law. Sorry! There must be other ways to highlight a cause. Just needs a bit of imagination.

MissingMoominMamma · 27/07/2024 23:30

The way they protest loses them support- massively.

Whilst I agree with what they are saying, I don’t agree with their methods, and other than you, OP, I haven’t heard anyone say a single good thing about them.

Sorry.

I know, right? They stand there wearing oil byproducts (the soles of their shoes, the orange plastic jackets, standing on tarmac-ed roads, in their nylon trousers, having cycled on their bikes which are painted in oil based paints, manufactured in plants using oil products, that have tyres now containing more crude oil by-products than natural rubber sap.) … and don’t get me started on the components of the mobile phones they use to record and transmit their antics.

They haven’t a fukken clue.

Isometimeswonder · 27/07/2024 23:30

They aren't risking careers.
Most are snotty little rich kids with too much time and money who have never been told the word no before.

Montydone · 27/07/2024 23:30

Interesting! Do you think if they targeted their non-violent actions specifically at banks, etc. there would be more support for them?

Omg you cannot talk about identifiable people you work with in this way!

it’s completely inappropriate!

'Just Stop Oil' is a single issue campaign directed at the government in a bid to not approve any new oil drilling licences and transition to renewable energy. They aren't saying that the population at large should 'just stop oil'.

Erm, how do you propose identifying these people??? We don't know anything about the poster's location or workplace?!

Burnbaby · 27/07/2024 23:37

If teenagers and young people are worried about climate change. They should have lived through the nuclear war threat and the advice to hide under the table. That was the 70’s and 80’s. The days of Greenham common and CND.

There was a EXR protest near me once. And they stayed overnight at a nearby church. You couldn’t move for the parked car. On the pavement and on the road. They should have used public transport.

MillyMollyMandHey · 27/07/2024 23:38

I utterly despise them. Silly, spoiled, privileged, otherwise bored cunts.

They make me actively care less about the environment.

You can’t ’stop oil’
