I worked for a while in an SEN (more SEMH tbh) unit attached to a school. We had members of staff punched/kicked in the stomach while pregnant, two ambulance incidents (one ended up being broken ribs, one concussion), one young (apprentice) member of staff sexually assaulted (procedure changed after that), being sworn at and threatened daily, being spat at, attached with chairs, fire extinguishers ,tables, objects thrown around and classroom trashed, one member of staff chased and threatened with a gardening hoe (massive failure of the site manager there) and many, many more. Police also got attacked, rocks thrown at them and were spat at when they attended for various reasons.
We never hit back, swore back, kicked or punched back, even in self defence, but if we did I can guarantee you , no one would've gone "aww, there ,there you lost your temper. It was adrenaline. It's all good."
If you speak to NHS staff and other first responders you'll hear even worse. None of us have the training, the right to defend ourselves or others, have adequate backup or weaponry to defend ourselves.
