The Weed. The Constant Weed!

So I live in a densely populated area and ffs. There are so many things that grind my gears. But one of the worst is that everyone - and I mean EVERYONE - smokes muthafucking weed. It stinks! I hate it! It’s all I can smell from dawn until dusk and worse in summer when the windows have to be open!

It’s not even like I get a passive chill out from the smell, ffs. I loathe it.

Came on to get some advice on my dandelion lawn. We are in a sea of them this year.

Dig them out, very long root and all. Use a long thin blade tool - usually sold as a dandelion remover. At least remove the seed heads so hopefully you won't get more of them next year.

Or get a rabbit. Or grow it out as a wildflower meadow.

It's not only in 'rough' areas, I live in a town that's thought to be naice/aspirational/posh/whatever, I own my home and my neighbour does too but they smoke it like a chimney. It seems to be everywhere and I agree the government either need to decriminalise it or toughen up on enforcing the fact that currently it is illegal.

It's easy to say the odd spliff in your own home isn't hurting anyone but the rise in county lines gangs and related violence says that isn't necessarily true not to mention the affect smoking it can have on mental health.

Because I've now seen legal cannibis used for medical reasons (in the UK), I've changed my opinion on it. I think that edibles and gummys are the way to go. It's mad that we grow it in the UK to sell to other countries who legalise it.
The problem won't go away because the dealers will just produce skunk and mix with more addictive substances.

I hope more people smoke weed as time goes by. Weed smokers are a lot more laid back than those that just smell it then moan on a public forum

Did you mean mellifluous? If you're going to criticise others...

BitOutOfPractice · 23/07/2024 09:48

@Pocketfullofdogtreats oh I LOVE it when some pompous ass corrects someone's SPAG then makes mistakes themselves. Honestly, it appeals to me on so many levels. So, thank you for your intervention. Shall we start on their punctuation now?

I made it clear that abuse of alcohol is harmful. No disagreement on that point. But sensible use of alcohol is not harmful . I drink 2 or 3 glasses of wine a week, rarely more than one an evening. I have several non drinking days each week. That is sensible use of alcohol which harms no one.

What you have listed is abuse of alcohol.

My point is that there is no reasonable, socially responsible use of weed. None.

“My point is that there is no reasonable, socially responsible use of weed. None.”

That’s just patently incorrect. I spent a number of years in Colorado after cannabis was legalised and it was definitely both reasonable and socially responsible. People could grow it in their own homes, thereby removing the street sellers entirely, and both edibles and vaping were more popular than smoking it outright. Neither of these lead to horrific smells, which I agree, smoking pot smells rank.

Making it illegal has worked about as well as any attempts at prohibition, end result being things are worse in every way.

Drunks are far worse than pot smokers imo. People I know who lived near a fancy area where drunk revellers congregated (racecourse) had to move because drunks kept pissing through their letterbox, not to mention the vomit and drunken fights.

Btw I realise my user name is suspect given the topic but I just randomly chose it 😆 I don’t smoke (anything) nor drink.

Alchol causes a lot of harm to society. Partner violence, violence to children, sport violence, fights outside pubs, poverty, debt, etc. The list is endless
What a stupid statement, it only harms the individual

At least alcohol is taxed and regulated. All cannabis users do is fund organised crime and invade the senses of everyone in their vicinity.

ClockworkDisaster · 23/07/2024 10:03

I absolutely hate the smell of the stuff. I was at a hotel for weeks with work earlier this year and I had to keep changing rooms to one that wasn’t near the car park because you could set your watch by someone smoking it. I eventually found where they were smoking it (in the smoking shelter) and it was around 3 corners and over 100m away from my room. Yet it felt like someone was smoking it directly under my window. I never once smelt cigarette smoke and I was there for 7 weeks so I doubt there was no smokers there for the whole time. The weed smell just seems to be so strong and drifts so far.

I did talk to the hotel about it several times and they said it was a guest and they had spoken to them about going further away to smoke it. I suspect it was staff though as it was at 5:30 and 10 every evening which seems more like so one working to a schedule than a guest who could have gone outside at any time they liked.

The only thing worse than prohibition (which was a disaster with alcohol and is with many drugs) is having a substance that's illegal but making no effort to actually enforce it which a) makes things super easy for organised crime who will always be the main beneficiaries of prohibition and b) means main supplies aren't regulated which means it's more harmful to the user as it's unregulated. In the case of cannabis it's also harmful to anyone unfortunate to be in close proximity to the user due to the pungent nature of what drug dealers are lacing the stuff with.

......

The weed in the UK and the USA and places in Europe where it's legal or decriminalised, or illegal, is all the same plant, same varieties, same terpenes, same active ingredients. In America there is a much higher availability of concentrates and high quality, high THC "skunk" type weed. America is the spiritual home of strong, purposefully hybridised weed

MaturingCheeseball · 23/07/2024 08:48

I agree it stinks - a nasty smell that I’m sure was not as bad as in the past. It’s bad in the streets but try going in a park! So much for green spaces for all.

Some friends were assaulted all night and all day by the smell of cannabis coming from the upstairs flat. Neither the police nor the council were the slightest bit interested. I suppose “smell” is difficult to define as opposed to noise nuisance. People could potentially complain about cooking smells or strong aftershave.

Cooking smells and strong aftershave do not linger as much as cannabis though.

OhmygodDont · 23/07/2024 11:17

The difference between “eugh that man stinks of Bolognese” vs “eugh more weed stench” one’s legal. One isn’t.

Have edibles is you must have a brownie or a gummy or something. Just don’t be stinking up the street as you drive by puffing away lingering long after your car is no longer visible.

Bullshit. None of the regular weed smokers I know are remotely “chilled”. They are moody, aggressive and utterly selfish. Have ended up dropping them over the years. They only care about getting their weed, smoking and talking about it in with other weed smokers. The cliche of a chilled hippy type is from years ago and not true today, with the synthetically grown county lines pushed stuff. Hate it.

It is not bullshit in my experience.
It is not a topic of conversation, unless about interesting strains.
How do you synthetically grow weed? There are various ways of growing, but that's a new one

PhantomSmoke · 23/07/2024 12:09

Ask any copper their opinion on whether they prefer dealing with drunks or whether they prefer dealing with potheads…One group is far more volatile than the other.

That said, I can’t condone the purchase of illegal drugs because of the human misery involved in the production and distribution, but all that making it illegal has done is to further that misery, it hasn’t stopped people from using it en masse.

Where do you lot live! I never smell it here and I live centrally in a small city

girljulian · 23/07/2024 13:01

I live in a small village in the Cotswolds where I think me and my partner are the only people under the age of 40 and the average age is about 75. It always reeks of weed from one end of the village to another. I assume there's an elderly lady dealing it out of the church hall for arthritis pains.

Maray1967 · 23/07/2024 13:07

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 23/07/2024 08:54

My classroom stinks of it, half the classes I teach smoke it and we can't do Jack about it...not allowed to search bags. The stench!

This is so depressing. Our society is in a terrible state when children’s possessions stink of weed and police/social services can’t do anything about it. I am so sorry that teachers are having to deal with this.

This is the consequence of the years-long campaign to have it decriminalised. Bloody awful.

😂 well those 75 year olds are the OG generation for western weed smoking.

I wouldn't touch skunk myself but I don't mind the smell.

I think a PP made a good point about the phycological and emotional connotations. I personally can't stand and heavily judge people who use strong, syntheticly fragranced washing powders and body products because I associate them with environmental degradation, respiratory disorders and pollution. Others seem to feel differently.

Devonbabs · 23/07/2024 13:11

Recently went back to the suburb where I previously lived - fucking hell it’s like the oxygen has been replaced by weed smoke. Hardly ever smell it where I live now.

There was a thread here a week or so ago saying more people are eschewing alcohol, well I think the same people are embracing weed.

The police are so under resourced/underfunded they can’t do anything. Certain quarters in society are “well it doesn’t do any harm” well actually it does major harm.

Time to just ban all smoking in public and the selling of smoking regalia. No one should have to smell of someone else’s addiction. I would reclassify weed as a class A drug due to the harm it does society.

“This is the consequence of the years-long campaign to have it decriminalised. Bloody awful.”

Can you please elaborate on this point? Because it’s still illegal…and yet…still a massive problem.

“Cannabis remains a Class B controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. This means that both possession and supply are illegal and subject to criminal penalties. While there has been some leniency in enforcement, particularly for minor possession cases, it is still not decriminalised.

  1. *Possession*: Still illegal, with penalties including up to 5 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.
  2. *Supply and Production*: Also illegal, with harsher penalties of up to 14 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.
  3. *Medical Cannabis*: Legal under strict conditions since November 2018, but this is not a form of decriminalisation for recreational use.

Despite some public and political debates about the potential benefits of decriminalising cannabis, the law has not changed in this regard.”

CruCru · 23/07/2024 13:30

At one point there was some debate to move cannabis up to class A but I don’t think it went anywhere.

eggplant16 · 23/07/2024 12:58

What is good about it please?

This is cut & paste from Google, but should give you the general idea:

Recreational Use

Euphoria: Cannabis can produce feelings of happiness and relaxation, commonly referred to as a "high".

Sensory Enhancement: It can intensify sensory perceptions, making music, food, and other experiences more enjoyable.

Social Interaction: Some people find that cannabis enhances social experiences and helps them connect with others.

Medical Use

Pain Relief: Cannabis can help alleviate chronic pain and is used by individuals with conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia.

Anxiety and Stress Reduction: Some users find that cannabis helps reduce anxiety and stress, providing a calming effect.

Nausea and Appetite Stimulation: It is often used to combat nausea and stimulate appetite, particularly in patients undergoing chemotherapy or those with conditions like HIV/AIDS.

Muscle Relaxation: It can help with muscle spasms and tension, benefiting conditions like multiple sclerosis.

Psychological and Emotional Use

Mood Improvement: Some individuals use cannabis to elevate their mood and manage symptoms of depression.

Creativity and Insight: Users often report enhanced creativity and new perspectives, finding it easier to think outside the box.

Spiritual and Cultural Use

Spiritual Practices: In some cultures, cannabis is used in religious or spiritual rituals to enhance meditation and spiritual experiences.

Tradition and Heritage: For some, using cannabis is part of cultural or traditional practices passed down through generations.

Personal Preference

Enjoyment: Simply put, some people enjoy the effects of cannabis and incorporate it into their lifestyle for personal pleasure.

Caveats

While many people enjoy using cannabis for these reasons, it's important to note that it can also have negative effects, including dependency, impaired cognitive function, and potential mental health issues. Legal status and societal attitudes towards cannabis vary widely around the world, influencing how it is used and perceived.”

I can tell you it ruined the personality and life of somebody I love very much.
