Is now going to be happening in January? what’s the point in stalling it? I think it’s one of many decisions that we just need to get in with.

YABU - it’s SO unfair. Labour hates ‘strivers’ etc etc

YANBU - Yup, Labour said they are taking away tax breaks for private schools, so let’s get on with it.

it's morally reprehensible to have a 2 tier education system whereby the wealthy pay

So communism then? With the state taking control of children?

@Longma please stop calling people who are in state schools plebs . It’s horrendously offensive.

I would imagine a good proportion of state school children can afford private schools but choose not to. So do stop name calling.

You seem to be calling 93% of children plebs- do stop- it’s so offensive. Stop lowering yourself .

We're all trying to give our kids the best education, state or private.

I hope the VAT from super rich families feeds back into state schooling.

It’ll go straight into labours pockets. You forget how many champagne socialists we have in this country, I know ppl are desperate to stick it to the wealthy but it really won’t go down like that.

it’s a shame that people are so jealous they can’t accept that private education takes the strain off public funded schools, just like private healthcare takes pressures of NHS

@Longma if you are referring to @DinnaeFashYersel her message (below) was against those in private schools and again said the word plebs when referring to state schools. It’s disgusting. It lowers the argument by those against private schools, being the ones calling those in state schools plebs. I went to a state school and I’m not a pleb. Nor are my family members in state schools.

DinnaeFashYersel · 21/07/2024 17:48
Very few people will take their kids out of private schools.

For starters you can tell by the attitudes on here they don't want their kids mixing with the plebs.

either they're jealous (and poor) or champagne socialists (and rich)... apparently...

which one is it then?

I agree- it seems those against private schools keep referring to those children in state schools as plebs or peasants. Even though they appear to be backing state schools, they are using this language to describe most of the children in our country. As a state school teacher- I can tell you they are not plebs, stop generalising and trying to portray a narrative to suit your agendas. Most parents in state schools are very successful and have more disposable income than private school parents- they are well educated , decent jobs and far far from the narrative some are pushing as plebs.

I have read back through the thread.

Theres been one person who is FOR private schools who has used the words peasants. And that’s lowered the argument - I hope she was joking as that is disgusting and there’s no protecting that. That comment is below but I can only hope it’s meant in sarcasm. The rest of the comments name calling state school children (who I once was!!!) is from those against private education. Madness!

lazzapazza · 21/07/2024 23:14

It's pointless. They will have to spend the money on more space, teachers and resources in state schools.

It was only ever to gain the votes of envious peasants.

Why don't you just accept that you are wrong? The UK does not stop at the Watford Gap. We are talking about the UK as a whole.

It is totally irrelevant to look at it on a medical school by medical school basis. Why? Because all medical degrees are equal and regulated by the GMC. A doctor is a doctor. Where you studied has no impact on your F1 placements or indeed your future career. Most doctors won't even know where their colleagues studied. It is clear that you know nothing about this. I do.

mugboat · 23/07/2024 08:42

personally I'd advocate for both... scrapping private schools (also, faith schools and grammar) and investing in education for all children.

This is not what is proposed, but it's what I would like.

That sounds like something out of a communist manifesto. What is wrong with faith schools?

In London maybe not certainly not UK wide. Both my LEA and the neighbouring LEA are oversubscribed. There are no spare seats.

I was surprised to hear that elder Gdcs’ lovely primary school, in a nice enough area and usually oversubscribed, will have room this September for the new reception class - which has usually needed to be housed in their affiliated nursery/pre-school, a good 15 minute walk away.

Younger Gdd will be starting in September, so it’ll mean a much easier school run for dd, Sil, and me, when I’m filling in. 🙂

KielderWater · 23/07/2024 12:43

I always find this funny - people thinking somewhere as far south as Newcastle represents ‘The North of the UK’

Sprinkle5 · 23/07/2024 08:57

The unfairness of it is many state educated kids get the same results without the advantages but still get overlooked for the top unis and jobs!

Frankly I think labour needs to go further and cap the amount of top uni places inline with privately educated percentages.

I’m interested in how state school pupils get overlooked for jobs?

I’m an EP at a big four firm, I’m state school educated. I wasn’t over looked- I applied for the graduate scheme like everyone else and worked my way up. I was not discriminated against and those who I applied with were all in a fair recruitment process.

In my firm now -When we have graduates apply - we take off the school and university- we’re not interested. We want talent and the best candidates.

My husband is from a state school, went to a non Russell group university, and is a CEO now. He’s had every opportunity because of his decisions and so have I. I was never discriminated against and nor do we discriminate in the firms we work in when recruiting. HR processes are very tight and fair in this country.

Long gone is the old boys club where people went through the back door- this is a perception based on historical biases.

Are you questioning whether I’m a state school teacher - is that what you’re asking? Yes I'm a head teacher for a large primary school in the North of England, with a large intake of disadvantaged and children with EAL.

mugboat · 23/07/2024 12:16

so your argument is essentially 'society is already unequal so lets keep it that way'?

I think the point that people are trying to make is that the 20% vat on private schools does not improve equality. It just makes the private schools more elite as only the really rich can afford them. It also puts more pressure on the state sector if they have increased pupil numbers and SEN pupils in state schools. Remember secondary schools have a population bulge Year 9 to Year 11 and some parts of the country have had large population increases. There is already inequality in state schools due to geographical catchment areas and additional students in the state sector does not make things more equal. I don't think the government will raise any money from the VAT rise that will have any significant impact on state schools.

Cicilai · 23/07/2024 12:51

As someone who lives in an area with lots of grammar schools. (South of England). How many free grammar schools are there in the north?

Can’t speak for the rest of the North but around us we have Ilkley Grammar, a single sex boys school in Skipton and Hedmondwike grammar school. They are all in beautiful areas, with high house prices. People move to the areas to get their children in to these if they have the money to afford the house prices!

that is not the point they are making, that is a separate point...

  1. Society is unequal, state schools are unequal... they will always be unequal so let's keep private schools.... Vs
  2. private schools exist and some people are on the threshold of affording the fees, the VAT increase will tip them over the edge and they will have to take up a state school place and we don't have enough

Totally different points.
