Is now going to be happening in January? what’s the point in stalling it? I think it’s one of many decisions that we just need to get in with.

YABU - it’s SO unfair. Labour hates ‘strivers’ etc etc

YANBU - Yup, Labour said they are taking away tax breaks for private schools, so let’s get on with it.

Plenty of people on low and middling wages have drive, focus and make good decisions.

In my experience managers in the eye watering wages often have very little actual expertise and make crap decisions whilst expecting those with the actual ability to make money for them even when they screw up due to sheer lack of any real ability at anything other than “managing”.

I bet those hard workers and good decision makers would do well and survive most situations and do not expect others pay for their kids. Even when it is being established high earners already pay thousand in taxes a year. People with morals do not expect that.

clarkkentsglasses · 22/07/2024 08:35

@MrsSchrute

The social divide becomes wider because it will be more expensive to send DC to private school. So the elite become "more elite" creating a bigger divide.

Era · 22/07/2024 08:35

This is a truly horrible thread. The vitriol levelled at people who have simply made the decision to spend their money on education rather than something else they could have purchased or consumed is really quite astonishing.

It's difficult to see it as anything other than envy when you read these comments.

Our private school has already said it won't pass on the VAT increase to us and instead will just cut all the communtiy work it does and also stop all means tested bursaries. So I couldn't care really when Labour bring in this rise. It really isn't going to have much effect on any of us, which I know is going to upset so many of you who were so desperate for it to make us struggle - sorry!

Exactly the same for us.

We are now going to retract the use of facilities that the local state community school used.

So now the parents will have to pay for it or the kids go without.

Wonder how they’ll be able to claim charity status.

DilemmaDelilah · 22/07/2024 08:39

In the case of the family I know, the child has a choral scholarship in a Cathedral school. That option is not available in a state school.

clarkkentsglasses · 22/07/2024 08:41

Also! Let's face it .... it's another race to the bottom which labour love.

God forbid anyone should do well themselves.

Let's tax the rich and give it to the poor people.

So far labour haven't got any money left with all these pay rises, public sector spending.

Cyclingmummy1 · 22/07/2024 08:45

I don't understand why they aren't getting on with any of their key aims.

Where are the 2 million extra NHS appointments? Why are asylum seekers still in hotels? They haven't build any houses yet, or set up the energy company, or smashed the gangs.

You're right, Labour are in power now, why are they stalling?

clarkkentsglasses · 22/07/2024 08:46

They won't @Sprinkle5 they just won't fund the community anymore. So the local community is going to miss out or the LA / and or parents will fund it instead of our school funding it.

That extra money will now go back into our school instead of the community.

It’s not going to be in January. Just because a couple of Sunday Times journalists think it might, really doesn’t mean it will. It takes HMRC about 6 months to register firms for VAT. They won’t get all the private schools registered by January for a start, that’s without the legal challenges that need to be worked through first.

it took my husband a couple of weeks

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 22/07/2024 08:48

It's not envy, it's the fact that private education is immoral. You should not be able to buy your child an advantage, everyone should have the same options.

I see VAT on school fees as the first step to abolishing private schools. It's not about little Jocasta having to suffer because her parents can't afford the fees, it's making a level (or as level as it can be) playing field.

What about all the state students suffering? I don't see much hand wringing about them.

SeeSeeRider · 22/07/2024 08:48

CoralReader · 21/07/2024 15:05

What have private school parents ever done to you?

In my case, screwed me up for years.

🤷‍♀️I’m sure there will be other options local schools can use.

Who is going to weep over choral scholarships? You live in another world.

It's exactly that. I had no idea that there was such hatred towards people who do well for themselves.

How dare anyone earn money and do what they want with it!

clarkkentsglasses · 22/07/2024 08:50

Yes absolutely @Sprinkle5 they will be able to use other options, but will have to pay for it. Our school let them use the facilities for free.

Who is expecting others to pay for their kids? 😂at “morals”.

VAT on a luxury that causes a huge amount of damage for the majority isn’t expecting others to pay for your kid.We live in a democracy and have public services for everybody paid for by taxes. If you don’t like that live somewhere else or vote accordingly. Plenty of us have had to suck up Tory policy and Brexit which we didn’t agree with for 14 years. Now others will have to suck up labour policy they don’t like. The difference with this is it’s a policy that impacts very few and the wealthiest.Tory policy has screwed swathes of the less well off and vulnerable over and again but there was precious little concern then.

ManyATrueWord · 22/07/2024 08:52

"Wah! My children will now have to have the same shit education that your children do."

Maybe you should have voted for social equity for the last fifteen years 🙄

Dontevenlookatme · 22/07/2024 08:52

If schools are cynical enough to do this, and I know most are, then let’s hope they aren’t the ‘charity’ registered ones - unless they’re looking for a way to get rid of their charity status and start paying proper business rates??

Tell me you don’t know anything about charity law without telling me you don’t know anything about charity law.

Good to see how genuine the helping out of the state sector was? 😂

You do realise they've been in power for about 17 days 🤣

Newbutoldfather · 22/07/2024 08:55

I am not against vat on school fees, I don’t see it as unfair and think a lot of the arguments used against it are totally hypocritical and self serving. To read some of these threads you would think private schools exist to aid social mobility and to support pupils with SEN!

But…it won’t raise a lot of money and it will be disruptive. So they should phase it in gradually, allowing schools and families time to make the adjustment.

It is very political and self defeating to do it so quickly and all at once.

Sprinkle5 · 22/07/2024 08:55

Yupthatsit · 22/07/2024 08:54

😂😂😂

And in that 17 days they’ve done more positive work than the Tories did in 14 years.

PenNirvana · 22/07/2024 08:55

The amount of airspace for such a niche policy combined with the shouty and almost bullying element of protesters on Mumsnet have eroded the sympathy I started out with. I don't care at all now.

Ha ha, go on then how do you make 2 million appointments available in less than 3 working weeks?
