Desperate help - passport expired, travel on Wednesday

Nowanextraone · 20/07/2024 19:10

I feel sick. I don't understand how we have overlooked this as we renewed 2 of our other children's passports, but we've just seen our daughter's passport expired in January.

We are fucked aren't we? It says a child's passport can only be renewed urgently in a week.
I feel sick

Insurance won't even pay will it as it's our fault.

I went to Newport Passport Office and got a sane day Passport for my child. Why are you so rude

Because you're talking nonsense and it's very unfair as it's likely to give the op false hope in an already awful situation.

IF you got a same day passport for a child then this was either some years ago before the rule changes OR someone (several people even) broke every single rule and policy in place, just for you, probably committing gross misconduct along the way.

I think the greater probability is that you're just flat out lying and I have no idea what would make someone do that. Odd.

I stayed with my wonderful & deeply loved grandparents when my parents went on a much needed holiday abroad after my mums hospital stay. Shock! horror! I have no resentment whatsoever, indeed I loved my time spent with Grannie & Grandad

And? Parents going abroad without their dc is a VERY different situation to the whole family flying off and just leaving one dc behind, so not really relevant is it?

If you read my post that's what I said. Why quote a misleading paragraph 🤦‍♀️

i had the same a few years ago. Noticed daughter’s passport had expired on Sunday and we were due to fly 4 days later.
I booked an appointment in Durham for the Tuesday (first one showing anywhere and we are London based) as there were none showing in Victoria, got the passport form countersigned that night and prepared to get the train on the Tuesday. I rechecked on the Monday morning and appointments had been released at Victoria on the same day. I got there, handed in forms and explained the predicament. I then rang them every two hours for the next two days. They must have got really fed up with me because on the Wednesday morning an exasperated woman rang me, told me off, made me pay extra and I picked up the passport on the same day.
I’m not saying that this will happen for you, but it’s worth a try. I was an absolute pain in the arse for them I’m sure.

This made me laugh. I'm the sort of person who would do this. Lol at least you got it in the end!

@Nottogetapenny The address you give for Peterborough passport office is incorrect. I don't know about any other passport offices. I get the impression that where you have copied that information from may not have been a gov.uk website.

The correct address is:

Quay House, 2 East Station Road,
Peterborough,
PE2 8YY

The address you give, they moved out of over a year ago.

Also, I can find no government website which says:

"Renew or amend a child passport £106.50"

This appears to be from that same, inaccurate, website that you quoted the passport office addresses from.

I agree the address given is wrong but I've been to Peterborough passport office 3 times and it's always been at Quay house.

When did you do this?

I did this at Durham 12 years ago.
The passport website says it is not possible now so I assumed the rules had changed.

It only moved to Quay House in early 2023. Before then it was at Aragon Court.

Aragon Court is the building near where the market used to be.

NO. I did this. We went to Newport.

OK, I’m just saying that the site you copied and pasted your information from (passport renewal.org.uk) looks very much like one of those scammy passport application sites, so it’s best not to direct people towards it and to use a more reputable source instead.

Bibbitybobbity70 · 21/07/2024 16:23

Worth trying. Just did a week passport for DS1 & it actually came in 2 days. (His passport had been lost in delivery by royal mail)

Edit to say - we didn't actually need it as urgently. Was Glasgow office & couriered 2 days later.

I didn’t copy and paste anything.

I didn’t share any links.

There's absolutely no way you did this less than a year ago... The Government article posted up thread was withdrawn in 2016 due to the rules changing in 2014 so there is zero chance you used the 24 hour service for a child in 2023.

OP - did you manage to contact pastry office today?

JellyBeanFactory · 21/07/2024 16:29

*passport (although pastry office sounds good!)

Anyhow, how's the OP getting on?

I booked a holiday and realised 1 week before we went that my child’s passport had expired. I went to the the Post Office to use the check and send service. They suggested I made an appointment instead. I did. I went to Newport. They refused to give me the Passport as I was not the main name on the holiday booking and my husband was not present. At the time, there was a high profile case regarding parental abduction so they were being extra cautious. I had to return the next day, with my husband, the child and the paperwork along with our passports and our marriage certificate. We got the passport 4 hours later. But yeah, I’m lying to a stranger on the internet about it.

chillidoritto · 21/07/2024 17:44

How are you getting on, OP?

JustAnotherDadOf2 · 21/07/2024 18:11

My wife had to do an emergency passport at the Peterborough office, booked an appointment and spent most of the day there but it was done in a day. Bear in mind that many/most countries wont even grant admittance if a passport still has 6 or13 months to run

That was for an adult passport. Child ones take longer

BloominMarvelous · 21/07/2024 18:13

Exactly this happened to me last year, I discovered my son's passport has ran out too. They definitely can't do a child passport same day only an adult, safety reasons. Timelines, we got an appointment on Tuesday at the Liverpool office, we received the passport the following Saturday morning (4 days turnaround)I couldn't change the flights so my husband went out first, got car etc. I bought flights for the evening.

Procrastinates · 21/07/2024 18:14

You're either lying about it or every single person you met that day broke the rules just for you? It seems unlikely everyone would disregard the rules just so your child got a passport otherwise what's the point in having the rules in place? Hmm

JustAnotherDadOf2 · 21/07/2024 18:15

My wife booked an emergency appointment at Peterborough passport office, it took most of the day,but she got it. Bear in mind that many countries in Europe won't grant entry if your passport still has 6 or 12 months left to run, so this might be lucky for you...

lateatwork · 21/07/2024 18:16

Do you have dual nationality and does the second country allow same day / 24 hour passports?
