Desperate help - passport expired, travel on Wednesday

Nowanextraone · 20/07/2024 19:10

I feel sick. I don't understand how we have overlooked this as we renewed 2 of our other children's passports, but we've just seen our daughter's passport expired in January.

We are fucked aren't we? It says a child's passport can only be renewed urgently in a week.
I feel sick

Insurance won't even pay will it as it's our fault.

Have you got Covid?
That might prevent you going.

🙄

Really? Why on Earth why?

Isn’t it obvious. You need more checks for a child. You don’t want children being taken abroad at a moments notice. It’s so one parent can’t take a child out of the country without the other parent knowing.

Am805463 · 20/07/2024 23:36

I went for an appointment last Monday morning at Liverpool and got my son’s passport back on Thursday. Could you maybe fly out later and join the rest of your family once you’ve got the passport?

Nowanextraone · 20/07/2024 21:53

Thanks everyone. It's really not an option to leave our daughter with anyone else. She's 9 years old, it would be absolutely horrifically awful for her.

We will call the passport office at 9am, but it doesn't look like there is any hope.

I wish I could explain the year we've had (which is why my mind was so tied up that I fucked this up). We needed this holiday so badly 😢

Totally understandable. My thoughts were it might be an option if very young around one or two. I hope it works out for the best.

MajorBumsore · 20/07/2024 23:49

i had the same a few years ago. Noticed daughter’s passport had expired on Sunday and we were due to fly 4 days later.
I booked an appointment in Durham for the Tuesday (first one showing anywhere and we are London based) as there were none showing in Victoria, got the passport form countersigned that night and prepared to get the train on the Tuesday. I rechecked on the Monday morning and appointments had been released at Victoria on the same day. I got there, handed in forms and explained the predicament. I then rang them every two hours for the next two days. They must have got really fed up with me because on the Wednesday morning an exasperated woman rang me, told me off, made me pay extra and I picked up the passport on the same day.
I’m not saying that this will happen for you, but it’s worth a try. I was an absolute pain in the arse for them I’m sure.

SlightlyJaded · 20/07/2024 23:55

First thing Monday and pray it comes in time
But back up plan is one parent travels with 2 x DC and the other catches up on a different flight the minute passport arrives.

Flight will be an additional cost but it's not going to be the 6K you stand to lose and you still get your holiday. How long is the holiday for? Definitely workable if it's two weeks....

piefacedClique · 20/07/2024 23:58

ive had to go in person to the passport office a few times in Newport. Each time the passport has arrived the next day. Adult and child.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 20/07/2024 23:59

The Glasgow office might have more appointments. The school holidays have already started 1-2 weeks already so I'd imagine there'd be less demand on that office now.

I’m sorry but how on earth is anyone suggesting sorting out family childcare?! 😰 Can you imagine the poor kid?! “Sorry honey, I know you’ve been so excited about holiday but we forgot to renew your passport so we’re just going to go instead and you can stay with gran” 😂 surely nobody actually sees that as a valid option?!

@Nowanextraone Mistakes happen. It’s crap! Get the application in whatever the fastest way is and cross your fingers and toes!

It was a suggestion if child was very young ie one or two as was stated...
Very young!

Windintrees · 21/07/2024 00:37

I phoned the PP Office on a Sunday. We were turned away from the flight on the Saturday as the was too close to return flight 🤨. Spoke to Liverpool on Sunday to a real person and DH went to an office on the Monday and collected a renewal. He took copies of all our flight bookings so they knew nothing dodgy happening.

Croufer · 20/07/2024 19:18

Really? Why on Earth why?

It's a measure against child abduction and trafficking. You know, crazy ex with a dozen non-molestation and restraining orders books one way flights to a lovely little country in the middle east, snatches the kiddie while she's outside at playtime, zooms to the passport office and says "we're all ready for our lovely holiday but silly old me remembered to bring everything but her passport! You couldn't knock up another one a bit sharpish could you? Ideally before 3.20pm if you can please, before anyone notic so as we can get good seats on the plane!".

Notchangingnameagain · 21/07/2024 05:15

GirlOverboard123 · 20/07/2024 22:23

You're quoting from one of those scammy passport websites, that charges you lots of money just to send the passport application off on your behalf. The official government website says that the 24 hour renewal only applies to adult passports.

NO. I did this. We went to Newport.

Notchangingnameagain · 21/07/2024 05:16

PosingPosture20 · 20/07/2024 22:20

No, you can't.

Why chuck out advice when you don't know what you're talking about?

I went to Newport Passport Office and got a sane day Passport for my child. Why are you so rude.

autienotnaughti · 21/07/2024 05:44

I'd ring today try to get an appointment for Monday. Explain the emergency and hope for the best. Choose which one of you will stay home with dd until it arrives. It maybe quicker with a renewal and you may only miss one or two days holiday

PeloMom · 21/07/2024 05:48

I had to renew my child’s Uk passport in May. Not urgent; standard application. It was received on one day and printed next day. We live on the west coast so it took a week from us sending to receipt of new passport but I’d assume would be much faster for you in the UK.

What is the point of this comment? How is it relevant?

How would a one or two year old have a passport that expired in January? 🤪 Clearly must be at least around 6 years old

HobNobAddict · 21/07/2024 07:37

Oh my OP - hope you can get this sorted before your holiday - fingers crossed for the one day service

My mistake. I wouldn't leave a child capable of understanding the concept of a holiday. Many children spend a week at a time with Grandparents. It wouldn't be my preference but absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Passport offices are open on Sundays
I really hope you can go on your much needed holiday

I'd be there in person OP & as early as possible today.

SoSoller · 21/07/2024 09:23

I can’t believe people were suggesting leaving the child at home. That’s the type of resentment that they would carry into adulthood Shock

Best of luck OP

I stayed with my wonderful & deeply loved grandparents when my parents went on a much needed holiday abroad after my mums hospital stay. Shock! horror! I have no resentment whatsoever, indeed I loved my time spent with Grannie & Grandad. I don't think its appropriate at age 9 (unless oc the child is happy about it) especially if other children in the family are going. I mistakenly suggested only if the child was very young forgetting the passport for a child also lasts many years. I also think other posters who suggested this were thinking along the same lines.
