To have a glass of wine while pregnant?

Third trimester, I know it's not recommended but ... really fancy a glass of wine. Would you?

OP posts:

I had the occasional small Guinness and everything was fine but I don’t know about wine (Guinness seemed like a more nutritious drink).

AhBiscuits · 20/07/2024 21:06

The question in the OP was
Would you?
No, I absolutely would not. The baby's blood alcohol level will be the same as mine. It's a poison. I can't imagine that being healthy for their liver. I wouldn't give alcohol to a newborn and I certainly wouldn't give it to an unborn.

Choochoo21 · 20/07/2024 21:06

If you’re craving the taste, then why not just have a non alcoholic version.

I’m sure a glass would be fine but I personally wouldn’t risk it.
If anything was to happen then I’d always wonder if it was my fault.

motherofbantams · 20/07/2024 21:07

Not worth the minuscule risk

I think that’s a good way of looking at it. A third trimester baby is like a newborn just inside rather than out.

BurbageBrook · 20/07/2024 21:10

By the way when I say I wouldn't do that to my baby - i know it wouldn't harm them in a serious way. But just like I wouldn't give my newborn a shot of wine, I also wouldn't enjoy the thought of my baby experiencing the effects of alcohol in the womb. I wanted that environment to be as safe for her as it possibly could be.

FreshsatsumaforDd · 20/07/2024 21:10

It is a moment for you but a lifetime for your child….when you think of it like that, you would not drink alcohol while pregnant.

Nat6999 · 20/07/2024 21:11

I had a spritzer at 5 months at my mum's 65th birthday meal & a Bailey's at Christmas at 8 months.

Reluctantlymiddleaged · 20/07/2024 21:11

Yes, I would and I did. Back then medical advice was 1-2 units once or twice a week. DS now 23, graduate with a good degree from good uni, lives with gf, lots of friends so...

foreverhidden · 20/07/2024 21:12

100% go for it. I had one today at 30 weeks. Lovely.

halfthesun · 20/07/2024 21:13

Nope.

Did you have any caffeine or sugar during pregnancy? I wouldn't give either to my newborn but I certainly consumed both during pregnancy. Daily.

DramaAlpaca · 20/07/2024 21:13

Absolutely not

Perfectlystill · 20/07/2024 21:13

YANBU

GoldfishSoup · 20/07/2024 21:15

Personally no. I didn’t touch a drop whilst pregnant or breastfeeding. I get that people say it’s safe, but I just didn’t feel like my need outweighed any potential risk.

People may not like that response, that was just my personal feeling, not judging anyone else.

Choochoo21 · 20/07/2024 21:16

For those that would drink during pregnancy… why?

Genuinely, what’s the point of having one glass of wine?
What does it do that you can’t wait a few months for?

For me, a small glass of wine isn’t worth having as it does nothing for me.

PrimalLass · 20/07/2024 21:16

Because I wanted one and there's no evidence it would harm the baby (now strapping and healthy teenagers).

Caffeine, no.
Sugar is just food. Basically any carbs are converted to sugar. It's not comparable.

I’m disgusted about people like you making incredibly judgemental comments when there is precisely 0 studies that suggest that a single glass of wine poses any risk whatsoever. But, whatever makes you feel good!

Some things deserve judgement.

There are plenty of studies that show that alcohol is not safe to be consumed in pregnancy. Perhaps you'd like to share one that says it's perfectly safe? Because even if there's a tiny chance of it causing harm, that's too much of a chance for something that's 100% avoidable.

weegiemum · 20/07/2024 21:22

Guidelines when I was pg with my 3 dc we're 1-2 small glasses of wine 1-2 times a week. Dc are now 20, 22 and 24, no issues.

My FIL was a psychologist who was a top researcher into FAS in the 70s and 80s. He called once I was in the second trimester with dc1 and suggested a pint of stout weekly for my iron levels! This was in 1999.

I didn't drink as much as was recommended ok but didn't worry either.

AegonT · 20/07/2024 21:34

One small glass at this stage would be fine in my opinion.

elm26 · 20/07/2024 21:38

I had a small glass of red at 38 weeks and baby is now 1 and thriving. It's your own decision to make! X

Sugargliderwombat · 20/07/2024 21:41

Over the third trimester I have a few small ones very slowly.

meganna · 20/07/2024 21:42

I had the odd small glass in the 3rd trimester with no guilt.

Again, I’m not the one casting judgement. Please do show me the research that shows 1 drink does harm.
