To wonder why there are so many irritating presenters now on Radio 1?

Any Radio 1 listeners out there who are not enjoying recent line-up changes?

Like going home with Vic, Katie, and Jamie. IMO such a poor combo, very limited chemistry or proper banter between them. It feels like Vic and Katie don't really like Jamie. And he barely seems to be there anyway, missing loads of shows. Vic and Jordan really seemed to get on and were entertaining. I find Katie dull. Jamie just doesn't riff with the other two though I did find him entertaining when he partnered up with Matt Edmondson.

I find Dean and Vicky very irritating, especially Vicky. And Nat.

I can't stand Jack whatshisname who presents the new music show and chart, he comes across as pretentious.

IABU?

Oh and yes, I know IABU for listening to R1 and not automatically expecting irritating chirpy wankers.

I agree.
YANBU for listening to R1 though!
Dean & Vicky have been replaced by Matt & Molly - who I like. They’re a great pairing. D&V defo not.
Still not sure about Vick, Katie & Jamie - I agree that Jamie being AWOL doesn’t help at all.
I think they need to stop dicking about with the line-ups. And why does everyone now need to be paired / tripled up? It seems very rare to have a single DJ.

Allinadayswork80 · 20/07/2024 01:23

Yes I totally agree, hate Vic, Katie & Jamie, really don’t enjoy them and don’t feel they’re particularly funny or witty or engaging. I have a 50min drive to/from work and LOVE Greg James in the mornings - sets me up for the day. Shame there isn’t similar going home. Matt & Moll are lovely, love their friendship and warm banter.

@araiwa whilst factually true I don't believe that this is the issue here. I think it's about the relationships the presenters have with each other - if you are going to put multiple people on then they need to interact with each other well.

@Allinadayswork80 @BearFacedCheek agreed, I like Matt and Moll too and again another example of two people who just seem to really enjoy each other's company which you can't help but smile at.

I also don't understand the obsession with multi-DJ slots, maybe it's easier for cover arrangements?! :-D

Yes @Allinadayswork80 Greg is superb.
God help us when he goes.
Vick and Jordan worked really well. Such a shame Jordan has gone to Capital. But something just isn’t quite clicking with Vick, Katie & Jamie - I think it’s cos there’s too many of them.

I like Jack Saunders a lot. Is that the Jack you meant?

WonderingWanda · 20/07/2024 09:21

I think most of the newer ones are useless. A lot of them aren't clever enough to be properly funny. I guess kids like them though?

I agree with that. When it got to the point that there was more waffle than tunes and the waffle wasn't worth the tunes either, I knew it was time to shift station.

Thank god for choice and digital radio!

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/07/2024 09:26

They've always been irritating you've just grown older.

ssd · 20/07/2024 09:51

Yep, when you are young your pretty irritating and self absorbed yourself so hearing it on the radio it washes over you. Then you have kids/relationships and you have to think a bit more about others. And you turn on the radio and its full of self obsessed annoying people and you wonder what happened. Nothing happened, it didn't change. You did.

Eventually it happens to everything. The telly was better in my day, music was better in my day, the shops were better in my day. Etc etc.

Its just life.

ssd · 20/07/2024 09:52

You're.
Can't edit.

ExtraOnions · 20/07/2024 09:54

…Radio 2 seem to think that the only qualifications you need are to be a self-professed “comedian” and you can have a radio show. No wonder the number are tanking

AnnaMagnani · 20/07/2024 09:54

It's because you are older and supposed to move to Radio 2.

maresedotes · 20/07/2024 10:01

Completely agree. It doesn't work with 3 presenters. Having said that, Melvin, Rickie and Charlie seem to gel a little better.

I loved Clara Amfo's programme.

Percivaleverett · 20/07/2024 10:01

I agree with you OP. I like Greg too but I also really like Ricky, Melvin & Charlie who follow his slot. See they’re a threesome but in my view they work together. I think some of them knew each other at uni so they have a rapport.
Jamie Laing is an odd choice in a way. I’ve only listened to him a few times but I agree about the lack of chemistry with him & his co-hosts. He was one of the most entertaining people to watch on MiC but I’m not sure that translates to radio.

Copperkryten · 20/07/2024 10:05

I've not got over the loss of Scott and Chris, they were so funny together.

CeciliaMars · 20/07/2024 11:21

When you start thinking like that, it's time to move to Radio 2!

This.

Emily1583 · 20/07/2024 11:25

Forget Radio 1, it's all about BBC 6Music. It's much better.

sausageupanalley · 20/07/2024 11:44

I'm def outside the radio 1 age range now (47) but I do still listen to it. I love Greg James and Matt and Molly. M&M are best friends and you can really tell. I love Made in Chelsea but feel aggrieved that Jamie got that slot- he's so privileged already and a new talent could have got that spot. He's not that young and not very cool and I agree the banter between him and the others feels very forced. I think M&M should get that afternoon slot.

Sparkletastic · 20/07/2024 13:09

Have you tried Radio 1 Relax? Great music and generally chilled non-irritating DJs. I'm 52 but too young for Radio 2 ☺️

Agree with this except thing, when I hit my 30s I thought ‘they’ll never know music like the stuff we had in the 80s, 90s and 00s but actually I think music now is really really good (huge Olivia Rodrigo fan!)

FishersGate · 20/07/2024 13:18

Completely agree only like Greg James. I like the music on radio 1. Just like listening to the old presenters on radio 2

WhereIsMyLight · 20/07/2024 13:30

I think a bit of it is getting older. I listen because it’s about 50/50 new music I like and new music I think is shit. And Radio 1 after 7pm has always been annoying.

However, there definitely are some personality clashes. Dean has moved to early breakfast and Vicky has moved to the weekend with Nat. I don’t really click with any of them. I quite liked Vick and Jordan but Jordan obviously had a bit of a falling out as he left very quickly whereas they usually give months of notice for schedule changes.

I found Ricky, Melvin and Charlie irritating when they first moved over but now they’re in the 10.30 slot they’re less irritating to me. Maybe it took some time to adjust to them. Or maybe everyone is just more irritating than them now! I think some of the reason I find the presenters irritating is their desperately clinging to their youth - a bit like me still pretending I can listen to radio 1!

maresedotes · 20/07/2024 13:42

I'm late 50s and I listen to Radio 1. I don't understand why there's this 'thing' that you can't after a certain age?
