To wonder why there are so many irritating presenters now on Radio 1?

Any Radio 1 listeners out there who are not enjoying recent line-up changes?

Like going home with Vic, Katie, and Jamie. IMO such a poor combo, very limited chemistry or proper banter between them. It feels like Vic and Katie don't really like Jamie. And he barely seems to be there anyway, missing loads of shows. Vic and Jordan really seemed to get on and were entertaining. I find Katie dull. Jamie just doesn't riff with the other two though I did find him entertaining when he partnered up with Matt Edmondson.

I find Dean and Vicky very irritating, especially Vicky. And Nat.

I can't stand Jack whatshisname who presents the new music show and chart, he comes across as pretentious.

IABU?

Oh and yes, I know IABU for listening to R1 and not automatically expecting irritating chirpy wankers.

I'm late 50s and I listen to Radio 1. I don't understand why there's this 'thing' that you can't after a certain age?

Me too!

Alconleigh · 20/07/2024 13:54

I am 48 and switched over to 6 Music with a dabble into Radio 2 and Absolute for my 90s indie needs years ago. My sister js 5 years older and still loves a bit of Radio 1. There's no rules, just depends what you enjoy!

Ishouldkoko · 20/07/2024 14:05

Don't they usually have new slots/djs from September? I hope that happens, they really seem to have got it wrong.
I enjoy Greg, Matt & Moll, Rickie, Melvin & Charlie.
I don't like Vic and Jamie, I agree Jamie was better with Matt but I never liked Vic even with Jordan. I did like Jordan, it's a shame he moved to capital.
I so badly miss Scott & Chris.

I still listen to radio 1, have got it on right now!
If you liked Chris and Scott then Chris presents the breakfast show with Jordan. I've tried but honestly can't stand all the ads.
Often when the BBC try to get with the kids and mess with the schedule it doesn't always work. Hope Greg sticks around for a while though 😊

PassingStranger · 20/07/2024 17:24

Voices against the cuts to local radio is a great discussion group.
Lots of talk about radio in general and the BBC.
Facebook.

Seashor · 20/07/2024 17:38

Against popular opinion I absolutely LOATHE Matt the Twat and Molly!!! I turn them off.
Greg James is absolutely brilliant, I LOVE him. I’m definitely out of the radio 1 age range but the day time DJ’s on radio 2 are dire.

Percivaleverett · 20/07/2024 10:01

I agree with you OP. I like Greg too but I also really like Ricky, Melvin & Charlie who follow his slot. See they’re a threesome but in my view they work together. I think some of them knew each other at uni so they have a rapport.
Jamie Laing is an odd choice in a way. I’ve only listened to him a few times but I agree about the lack of chemistry with him & his co-hosts. He was one of the most entertaining people to watch on MiC but I’m not sure that translates to radio.

Yes, Ricky, Melvin & Charlie are a threesome that buck the trend and do work. I think because as you say @Percivaleverett R&M go way back, from uni days, so there’s genuine chemistry & friendship, & that obviously translates to us, the listener. I think Charlie worked with them on their previous station (not entirely sure about that tho). But they all gel together v well.
R1 big boss Aled take note (yeah right!) - don’t just chuck randos together (see Dean & Vicky) as it often does not work. Genuine chemistry is required. Or, have actual talented DJs who can manage it single-handedly. Pleeeaaasee.

BearFacedCheek · 20/07/2024 22:34

It’s actually quite hard to find any presenter info. This is the best I could find
Info
I forgot about Danny Beard’s stint over the summer. He did a good job, covering, singlehandedly! Bring him back.

There isn’t, it’s just that a lot of people’s taste in music is formed when they’re younger and they have the time and money to go to festivals/gigs/buy records. As they get older most want to listen to reliable old favourites from the 80s/90s whatever and stop caring about keeping up with the latest pop/dance stuff, leave that to their kids, and so R2 becomes an easier default listen.

I’m 50 and haven’t listened to R1 probably since R6M began. My younger chart obsessed self would’ve been so disappointed in me.😂

R6M suits me better as it has interesting DJs who aren’t irritating (with a couple of honourable exceptions) and who are closer in age to me so any cultural references hit better. They know their stuff and it’s not all about them and inane chatter. It plays a good mix of genres and old/new music.

I also listen to R4 and R2 occasionally, but only for The Archers and Pick of the Pops.

Comefromaway · 20/07/2024 23:10

I’m 50.

I love Greg James, couldn’t stand Jordan, I gave up in the end and switched off. Going Home is much better now.

buzzy1 · 22/07/2024 19:00

I’m 49 and used to listen to R1 a fair bit - loved Future Sounds with Annie Mac and then Clara Amfo.. I now tolerate Jack Saunders but his ott superlatives are off putting and so pretentious so struggle to listen. Greg James is fun and I think Katie Thistleton comes across authentic and genuine (have a soft spot as my kids liked her on CBBC). Can’t listen to the drive time show with Vic and Jamie though , agree they lack chemistry as a group (and need to take lessons from Ricky, Melvin and Charlie). Also find Matt and smug Mollie irritating and unlistenable.

Demonhunter · 22/07/2024 19:14

Radio 1 openly say their target audience is under 30 so if you're much over 30 the presenters aren't aimed at you anymore so maybe why they're annoying you now.
All my old R1 favourites from being a kid into my late 20s/early 30s went to R2 and R6 in time... Jo Wiley, Trevor Nelson, Sara Cox, Zoe Ball, Spoony, Steve Lamaq, Simon Mayo Mark Goodier, Gary Davies, Edith Bowman. I'd guess your R1 favourites will eventually go the same way.

buzzy1 · 22/07/2024 19:32

I get they should be the target audience but my two teenagers find the R1 DJs mostly cringey to listen to

Mnk711 · 30/07/2024 22:21

Hmmm to all those saying it's just getting older I don't think that can be true, or not solely true, as the BBC clearly agreed with me and moved Dean and Vicky after poor ratings. I definitely think there is something about the age thing - for example the excessive dumbing down of the news pisses me off massively - but I don't think this is my issue with these presenters. I think they are just not entertaining.

I agree with those who have said they like Ricky, Melvin, and Charli and agree even if you don't like them particularly they are clearly just having a great time and great chemistry so it makes it entertaining. Like when you go to a comedy show and find yourself laughing along with the crowd even though if you'd watched it on TV alone you wouldn't have enjoyed it.

I hate Radio 2. It feels far too twee for me, the music is mostly boring rubbish, I don't like listening to older music just because it's old. If it's good then great but mostly it is not. And the presenters are all boring. I don't mind Vernon Kaye in small doses as he is another person who just clearly is having a great time, but I hate the music.

Will have to try the other options people have suggested here - need to work out how to get them on the car radio :-D

Yeh it’s because you’re getting older. It happened to me once too - one day happily listening to radio 1, next day the presenters I used to like were SO irritating. I had to switch stations.

Odysseywasinthemiddle · 30/07/2024 22:25

YANBU and the kids these days HATE the words which are usually being shouted out of Radio 1 on a Saturday

bangers
bangin’
choooooooon
buzzin
obsessed

There was a podcast about it recently but I’m trying to remember what it was called!

However, I still listen 🤪

TokyoSushi · 30/07/2024 22:28

Agree that Dean & Vicky are terrible.

Vick, Katie & Jamie just doesn't work at all, I expect Radio 1 know this and it won't last for much longer. Vick is married to Calvin Harris and seems to spend every weekend in Ibiza, I can't imagine she she'll be bothered doing a rubbish radio show for much longer...

Percivaleverett · 30/07/2024 23:23

I’m not sure I’ve heard Dean & Vicky much but I have to agree with the poster up thread about Matt & Molly. They are so annoying! I didn’t realise that Vick was married to Calvin Harris! Jamie never seems to be there, I listened the other day & they didn’t even explain his absence which I thought was odd. I agree that they prob know it isn’t working behind the scenes.

ThisDenimKoala · 08/09/2024 00:50

I like hearing what the "new" music is like and presenters always change - that's life. Personally, I love Vic Hope (well-spoken, caramel voice, intelligence and humour bursting out of her) but not sure she what a show on her own would be like - she needs people to riff off. Jamie is a weird choice but his ineptitude is undeniably funny. Katie brings energy and enthusiasm, and creates a strong female team against the posh white man. The dynamic works well imo.

Hmmm I'm am afraid my opinion hadn't changed, still hate the combo.
