To not understand why my mum ( or anyone ) needs to sunbathe topless ?

I'm staying with mum and my two kids at a holiday cottage. It's private so no one can see, but I still don't get why she or anyone feels the need to sunbathe topless ? I would just never do it and it makes me a bit uncomfortable to be around people who sunbathe topless.

I get it I get it, not everyone is like me.

But why do your boobs need to be brown ?

She also insists on wearing a bikini at almost 70. Ok fine, I don't wear a bikini and I'm not even 40 yet. I do think, good for you but I do think one pieces are just more classy. Same with having everything on display.

I realise I sound mean spirited don't I ? Or just uptight ? But isn't more, less and more classy in general ? Interested in opinions !

She raised me so I'm surprised I am not more on display myself but I'm pretty private about my body and always have been.

I would dislike this, it would make me and my kids feel uncomfortable. It’s great if other cultures are fine with it but that’s precisely what makes them other cultures. Whatever people do in private is their own affair but I would choose not to be an audience. People are constantly being told to put up boundaries they are comfortable with but at the same time being told their boundaries are silly.

Runbunny · 19/07/2024 10:04

I'm not a fan of top less sunbathing, tbh not sure aboutbsunbathing at all, but you're wrong about 2 piece v 1 piece swim suits.

DinnaeFashYersel · 19/07/2024 10:05

Ageist and sexist.

MrHarleyQuin · 19/07/2024 10:06

Compare the relatively sane comments on this thread to the absolute meltdown the other days some people had at the suggestion of a 41 year old wearing a thong bikini.

tuttuttutt · 19/07/2024 10:07

I wouldn't inflict my tits on my children at any age. I still have flashbacks of my parents naked bodies as a child.

MrHarleyQuin · 19/07/2024 10:07

I enjoy the sun but lie in the shade and I don't tan my boobs.

OhmygodDont · 19/07/2024 10:09

Currently making the most of the sun in my garden boobs out. All the local kids are at school and neighbours at work. My garden my boobs 🤷🏻‍♀️

MissUltraViolet · 19/07/2024 10:09

There was a thread the other day about whether it was appropriate for a mum to wear a thong bikini in front of her children and the majority said nooo, the kids would hate it, be embarassed etc.

This post people are saying it's fine for grandma to have her boobs out in front of the grandchildren.

Never change, MN!

I've just developed flexural psoriasis in the crease under one breast and I suspect that I'm about to manifest it in my underarms.

I wish I had enough privacy to sunbathe without a top to try and get sun to these areas (I'd need to tape up my breast and put my arms above my head).

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 19/07/2024 10:09

My partner sunbathes topless. He's a man though so he's automatically allowed more freedom.

It's only social conditioning that makes you think women's bodies are obscene and men's aren't. Society isn't always right about everything, you know.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 19/07/2024 10:11

I'm always quite envious of the way men can swan around in just a pair of shorts if they want. I don't see why their nipples can be on display and mine can't, really.

Having said that, I cover up from neck to knee, put a hat on and sit in the shade at the first sign of any sun.

FoxtrotSkarloey · 19/07/2024 10:11

I would have said leave her be. Personally I don't see the need, if you're worried about strap marks, just take the straps down.

But now I have DC it's trickier. I'm trying to distill in them that privates and private, and that includes boobs for girls, and that as they grow up, they can't run round with no clothes on. And then they see adult women topless on the beach.

SpilltheTea · 19/07/2024 10:11

It's just the human body OP, calm down.
That being said, getting your tits out with your grandchildren around is bloody weird.

LegendInMyOwnLunchtime · 19/07/2024 10:14

I prefer to sunbathe and swim naked if circumstances allow.

Absolutely about the freedom.

Wolfpa · 19/07/2024 10:16

They are just bags of fat, it’s healthy to see other bodies of all shapes and sizes.

ineedtogwtoutbeforeitatoohot · 19/07/2024 10:16

How old are your kids. What do they think about it. Mine would be grossed out by a top less granny

gamerchick · 19/07/2024 10:16

Tbah Id find it uncomfortable sitting with people who have their waps out, never mind my mother. Bikinis don't bother me though.

I also don't get the need to go brown either, never mind all over brown.

I think it's just something you'll have to ignore OP, or get yourself out for a bit.

Tickletuesday · 19/07/2024 10:18

I’ve just come back from a holiday where most of the beach goers were Spanish. Bikinis are worn by all the woman no matter the age, i
actually felt a bit out of place wearing my tankini but after a couple of days I was stuck wearing it as I had a tan with a very white stomach.

very few women were topless, if they were they were the older generation. 20 years ago you looked out of place if you wore your bikini
top.

Let your mum be, it’s a private space. Ill
be going back to wearing a bikini next year.

CheeseWisely · 19/07/2024 10:19

YANBU about the topless sunbathing; I'd only ever do it if it was just me & DH and somewhere private.

YABU about the bikini.

What about using those stick on bras? They can give you coverage and allow you to lift the breast. If it would help your skin condition it would be a shame not to do it.

Choochoo21 · 19/07/2024 10:22

I have nice boobs and a nice bum but I still wouldn’t go around topless or wear a thong bikini.

I don’t know why people do it because it’s easy to not get strap mark whilst still being covered.

I would never do it in front of my kids either.

I feel the same about men who wear thongs or super small speedos on the beach for display purposes too.

I used to work in a strip club (not as a stripper) so I am by no means a prude or ashamed of the naked body.

That is a very helpful idea. Thank you. (Now, I need to book somewhere with privacy but that's a separate issue.)

Choochoo21 · 19/07/2024 10:24

I do think one piece swim suits tend to look better, especially nowadays because you get really nice ones but I have no issues with someone wearing a bikini, regardless of age or size.

Despair1 · 19/07/2024 10:24

Hi OP, I totally understand and agree with your viewpoint but it is really up to your mum

gamerchick · 19/07/2024 10:24

CatamaranViper · 19/07/2024 09:33

Why?
What's the worst thing that can happen if your kids see boobs?

Lunch?
