Disorder in Leeds

Anyone watching the public disorder in Leeds? Bloody disgusting behaviour. Animals. AIBU to wish police had so many more resources to bring consequences to these absolute excuses for humanity?

Ok but the Romany are Indians. Not Romanians.

Or from Roma in Italy for that matter.

They are believed to have originated there, but are considered nomadic. People from Rome are either Italian or call themselves Romans.

Police and SS went in as the family were planning to take the kids to Romania tomorrow …a baby has a fractured skull 😦.

A local woman said she told the bus driver get off the bus and save your life…this type of behaviour has no place in our society…it’s scary 😟 .

That acronym is quite unfortunate 😬

I notice that certain prominent MPs and commentators have jumped in with ill informed comments on this.

I wonder if Farage has even been to Harehills.

He would be too scared! He's a cringeworthy cowardly little turd!

In his life, Farage has hardly ever been to Clacton nevermind Harehills.

*Not Starmer's biggest fan but it's a shame he won that seat, the Labour candidate was quite dapper.

I wonder how much the clean up will cost Leeds taxpayers? Why destroy your own area?

The scumbags destroying it likely don’t pay tax, they’re just a drain on society in every way

Yes, I can see that because you are half East Asian-I presume you mean your dad is from somewhere else. But both my parents, my two sisters and all my ancestors are from Italy-it just so happens that I was born here when my parents had lived in England for 14 months. It would be unthinkable to call myself English when everyone else belonging to me was Italian-my blood is not one drop different to theirs.
Others may feel differently but I know enough in the same situation as me to say confidently that most don't!
My point is the utter craziness of English people to want to label everyone English- even if they don't have one drop of English blood, It's bloody patronising for one thing and for another, it does lead to all sorts of problems if then English people simply won't acknowledge that we are not exactly the same.

I'm European, so carry most of the same values, look like you and follow the Catholic religion-the religion that used to be the religion of this country, so I'm practically your first cousin and yet I don't feel or want to acknowledge myself as English.

Many people from another culture entirely with an entirely different religion must feel this ten times more and yet here are people shoving it down everyone's throat that all it takes is a bit of legal paper or being born under this piece of sky with not one drop of English blood and hey ho, you're English.

I think they-and I- are not and probably don't want to be either. If we accepted differences nad that some of those differences mean unpalatable things-then we wouldn't be in the silly position of some on this thread pretending that these riots were caused by English people.

Until people start referring to Cliff Richard and Felicity Kendal as Indian British, then it's all just nonsense I'm afraid.

Still, there's none so blind as those who think that being English is a marvellous compliment and one that every person who lives here is automatically English and wanting to be suburban Mr Jones. They don't. Some might but there are exceptions to every rule.

it looks as if the rioters in Harehills were mostly Asian. How do I know this? I have eyes.

I honestly think it’s a coloniser mentality. I completely know what you are saying - my daughter was born in an Asian country, to European parents (me and DH) and speaks the Asian language fluently. If she started describing herself as that country’s nationality people would think she was mad! They’d laugh!

Honeymoon over Labour. When are they going to get a grip of law and order?

Police running away, criminals being released from prison, Britain teetering on the brink of anarchy with unruly mobs and Starmer is silent.

Poverty, dissatisfaction, drugs, no hope.

It's a breakdown in law and order. Nobody fears the police, they ran away again. There's no deterrent, no respect, no hope.

I'm sorry but they've barely been in power for hours (officially) so it's not something to blame the ruling party over. If anything it's more likely down to the policies we've lived under for years, including underfunding and overcrowding.

They've only just got in and already we've got riots.

Word has got out that Labour are in now and they'll be soft on crime. Things will only get worse.

Oh give over, I'd be surprised if many on this particular estate knew there'd recently been an election, nevermind who won and what their policies are. They will be mostly semi literate and/or with sever langauge barriers, one of the many things that prevents them from integrating or contributing to society.

Don’t be daft. They’ve been in power for ten minutes. Sorting out a country has the turning circle of the ark royal. They can’t pull dozens of police officers out of their arse can they.

RightOnTheEdge · 19/07/2024 21:14

Some staff at Jimmy's are saying that the man setting the bus on fire is a doctor!
Probably just a mad rumour though.

As an immigrant myself, I find your and @OlgaBracley’s points really interesting. I can definitely relate to it.
Personally, I’m not entirely sure whether it’s a coloniser mentality or rather an eagerness to appear inclusive and welcoming.
I don’t think it’s helpful.

The vast majority of Roma in the UK have come from Romania. There are some from Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey but even they avoid the Romanians.

Out of interest, why are they called Roma if they're from India originally.

I know this is a horrible situation but I am a bit fascinated by their history, they were travelling actors and dancers, yes? Sounds bohemian.

I thought someone claimed the man igniting the bus was born here

How do you know how literate he is?

I grew up poor and working class in an area like this. I find it disgusting that people try to excuse such scummy behavior as being due to poverty. The vast majority of poor, working class, people do not behave in this way! Please do not associate us with this.

Places like this have a "crabs in a bucket mentality" that works horrors on the youth. Kids who want to better themselves are mocked and ostracized, not encouraged. Therefore, it's hard to get out.

Oh, and I promise you, 95% of people in these areas WANT the police called, and they want the police to be using brute force like water cannons. They want this nonsense stopped just as much as those watching at home do.

Sadly the police are a waste of space and powerless to do anything.

Do you think the residents of that estate have the collection of Dickens on their shelves?.
They are severely impoverished and largely from other nations, mostly nations which don't generally educate their populations, I am gonna hazard a guess there are some literacy issues.

Harehills was the first place my DGPs lived when they came to the city. There was no effort made to welcome or make life easy for immigrants then. My DGM was 8 and didn’t speak a word of English. She was put in a classroom and was left to sink or swim. Now I’m not saying that’s good and I can’t imagine how frightening that must have been for a small child who has just left everything they know and come over on a packed ship not knowing where she would be or what it would be like. My DGGPs worked in sweatshops and my DGPs helped them after school. It was a crash course in learning English, working your way around a new country while still traumatised after what they’d escaped from.

Now there are translation services, kids are integrated into schools and given English lessons. There’s help available . It must be hard to adapt but there is so much more compassion and help to integrate if people want to. My family kept their own religion and language at home but once out the home, they did everything they could to integrate and fit in. My DF always said we owed the UK our lives and needed to do our bit. He served for the UK in the war and was proud to have done that. Yes be proud of your heritage but I believe those coming to any new country for whatever reason, have a responsibility to learn the language and not trash their neighbourhoods. It’s not acceptable.

‘Roma’ means ‘people’ in the Romani language. It’s just a coincidence that it sounds a bit like Romania which has Latin roots same as the city of Rome.

Is it Dickens on shelves or semi literate?

Seems quite stark for options
