Anyone watching the public disorder in Leeds? Bloody disgusting behaviour. Animals. AIBU to wish police had so many more resources to bring consequences to these absolute excuses for humanity?

Is the riotong in Leeds linked in any way to the rioting in London or is that a coincidence?

The rioting in London related to a police shooting in Bangladesh so is unrelated.

A police shooting in Bangladesh? I blame the Tories.

Unrelated. It was a coincidence, egged on by it being hot weather.

A lot of the Roma community turned up as the children were taken into care. Police came. Then people up for some disruption came.

No one hurt, no looting, a police car tipped over and a bus set on fire. More people filming on their phones than taking part. All quiet again by midnight.

There were some scary moments but ultimately it was a storm in a teacup.

Poverty, dissatisfaction, drugs, no hope.

What a load of boolloocks , I grew up and live in a very impoverished area; not everybody chooses a life of crime, or drugs, or neglecting their kids. It’s a piss poor excuse. Unfortunately the police are not responsible for convicting people and it will be our courts who let them away with it. It’s this kind of excuse making that makes life difficult for the rest of us and actually short changes kids being brought up in this environment.

Also the working poor are going to be worried about being fired if they are out there setting fire to shit and getting filmed doing it. These are people who don’t worry about consequences because it won’t change their lives.

We have to stop excusing people because their life is a bit difficult. Loads of people have difficult lives but they are too busy holding their shit together to set fire to anything. What kind of person lets their kid join a bloody riot. Sorry but I don’t feel sorry for them one bit. Many people work hard and do their best and don’t make their communities worse. I’ll reserve my sympathy for them and anyone trying to protect children.

Couldn’t agree more.
My family were immigrants, had to give up their careers after moving to a new country and start from scratch.
We knew several families like ours, all faced difficulties, all had to work hard, and several unfortunately also encountered prejudice and xenophobia.
That didn’t prompt them to start smashing up police cars or setting things on fire.

Not exactly a storm in a teacup if you're one of the poor terrified residents

I completely agree. The mental gymnastics being used to portray the rioters as the victims is ridiculous. The victims are the innocent people trapped and scared in their own homes by this bullshit, and the taxpayers who have to pay for this nonsense to be cleaned up.

Agree.

the80sweregreat · 19/07/2024 16:36

I Agree with st Janetof too.

marshmallowmix · 19/07/2024 16:39

We are way too soft in this country…let them try that is some places and see what happens.

I feel sorry for the decency people caught up in the carnage, the bus company that had their bus torched…stop pussy footing about and get tough on those that did this.

Same here. My family escaped danger and poverty in their country of origin and came here wanting nothing more than to adapt to British culture and be part of it, not attack it.

Okay….. not quite sure how to respond to that tbh.

Boomer55 · 19/07/2024 16:56

A child needed to be taken into care. Some locals responded.

IClaudine · 19/07/2024 16:59

How do we know all the rioters were not born here?

I think the rhetoric needs dialling down a bit, tbh. Idiots riot and being an idiot isn't the preserve of non British people as we saw in the 80s and in 2011.

*Edited as have just seen something suggesting the family concerned is not from the UK.

I wonder how many people know the difference between Romanians and Romany? This thread is teaching me that not many.

Exactly, blaming it on dissatisfaction with life removes agency from the individuals who do decide to do the above things (life of crime, drugs, neglecting kids) and goes halfway to normalising it somewhat.

Especially on that last part of neglecting kids, absolutely no excuse for that.

roundspongecake · 19/07/2024 17:11

Buses are bloody expensive. I wouldn't be surprised if the company stop serving that part of the route

On the news it was reports to be £100,000!

marshmallowmix · 19/07/2024 17:16

Police and SS went in as the family were planning to take the kids to Romania tomorrow …a baby has a fractured skull 😦.

A local woman said she told the bus driver get off the bus and save your life…this type of behaviour has no place in our society…it’s scary 😟 .

The vast majority of Roma in the UK have come from Romania. There are some from Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey but even they avoid the Romanians.

rallyup · 19/07/2024 17:19

Shame that cancelling the bus route there would only impact the people that need to get to work.

rallyup · 19/07/2024 17:20

Ok but the Romany are Indians. Not Romanians.

Or from Roma in Italy for that matter.
