Anyone watching the public disorder in Leeds? Bloody disgusting behaviour. Animals. AIBU to wish police had so many more resources to bring consequences to these absolute excuses for humanity?

@Leedsborn there is a difference in seeing police and a functioning police presence. If police need to retreat on the premise of unrest then it’s a no go area for police enforcement. Seeing a copper when it’s quiet is irrelevant if they disappear when there’s trouble

Harehills has always been an area where there is a lot of poverty and thought of as not safe (I grew up not far from there). I moved to another part of the city many years ago and haven't been through Harehills in a long time until November last year. My son was taking part in a charity MMA fight and gym training was in Leeds so I had to take him and wait for him. I'm fairly street smart but I felt intimidated and fearful and there was a sense of tension in the air. I spent every evening there sitting in my car in Morrison's carpark where there was good lighting and CCTV.
Harehills and Gipton are seen as problematic areas yet 5 minutes drive away you are in Moortown and Shadwell where houses are £2 million plus...

Yes, I'm shocked at the responses form some here deriding the idea that this is caused by poverty, neglect, dissatisfaction.

This is exactly why looking after the most vulnerable is a mark of civilisation.

Edited

Poverty, neglect, dissatisfaction... a taste for violence, and stupidity.

Not everyone who is poor, dissatisfied, or living in a neglected area takes to the streets and riots.

I see white and black people. Are you saying black people can not be British? That black people can not be born in Britain?

Clearly not.

Scarletrunner · 19/07/2024 05:59

Time of year - kids off school, light nights - I think there is some 'rioting' every year aka teens being idiots.

You left out the Royal Family, minus the Sussexes.
The DM are some of the biggest RF suck ups and some of the biggest Sussex haters.
They’re also big on American right-wing politicians and Donald Trump - but that might be the US version of DM.

No- they are as mean, in a less obvious way, to William and Kate and Charles and Camilla as they are to the Sussexes. The meanness is just driven by different motives.

Harehills is pretty much a No go area. Yes poverty, disenfranchisement etc go into it.

But many attempts have been made to by charities and councils to improve the area. All of which fail because of the people. There’s many lovely people there. But there is a large minority of shit heads.

It’s not surprising they kicked off over children, who were being neglected, being removed. This large minority don’t give a shit that children deserve better. It’s their area and they believe the law has no place there. It doesn’t matter to these shit heads that the kids deserve more. That their attitude just breeds more children who carry on acting this way. They even fit from it being this way and want it to continue.

They don’t care about community. They care about maintaining the status quo that lets them be shitheads. They don’t want better for their own kids or other peoples. Because their kids being better make them feel their kids are rejecting their way of living and shows them for what they are.

Curlyshabtree · 19/07/2024 06:21

I live and work in Harehills, this is my community. A community so many are trying to improve. There are many complex issues here, poverty, housing, crime and disenfranchisement. What happened last night was terrifying and my only hope is that this can be the catalyst to really make the improvements needed.
For what it’s worth I have always felt safe here and, despite what was broadcast last night, there is a a strong community spirit and this is what will carry us over the line.
We don’t need your judgement, we don’t want you to tell us how shit are home is. We are aware of the problems and we will work together to improve it.

This behaviour is not due to 'them poor impoverished people'.

It's due to sheer male arrogance and violence.

Plus ca change.

These men are brutes, much like white hooligans, it's testosterone without the checks and balances afforded by functional communities. Disfunctional communities are not about poverty, they're about lack of values and culture. Hooligans and the men engaging in mob violence in Leeds are behaving like this because their mothers, fathers and wider community raised them as entitled prats. It's ridiculous to claim that this is because of poverty. These groups live a life of lawlessness and entitledness every day; it's just that last night they felt hot and bothered and in their self righteousness took to open mob violence. It's really quite basic and unsophisticated people. Look at their mothers and fathers who make them so. It's similar to hooligans, basic male violence.

Pictures of the Green Party MP Mothin Ali spotted among the crowd according to Oli London

He was filmed trying to get people to stop, and attempting to put out fires and clean up.

TERFCat · 19/07/2024 06:29

I grew up poor and working class in an area like this. I find it disgusting that people try to excuse such scummy behavior as being due to poverty. The vast majority of poor, working class, people do not behave in this way! Please do not associate us with this.

Places like this have a "crabs in a bucket mentality" that works horrors on the youth. Kids who want to better themselves are mocked and ostracized, not encouraged. Therefore, it's hard to get out.

Oh, and I promise you, 95% of people in these areas WANT the police called, and they want the police to be using brute force like water cannons. They want this nonsense stopped just as much as those watching at home do.

LuluBlakey1 · 19/07/2024 06:29

As expected, Farage has now waded in with carefully crafted remarks that are essentially blaming race and his usual 'Don't say I didn't warn you...' politics.

Meanwhile he is stumping for Trump and making a fortune in American politics.

Those men were having super fun, they were laughing and live streaming while smashing a police car over and over. Imagine being a teacher in this neighbourhood😬This is not just one community, it's mobby men acting out their Testosterone, it really could be anywhere, each city has groups of men that have the potential to act like this. They did this because the could, validating their lack of morals and decent values. They did this because there is no fear of authority. I've seen young white British upper middle class men behave like this at protest marches in London, joining in the fun of hating on the police and smashing things up. The videos show how happy they all look while smashing the car.

I think the Romanian accent gives us a clue.
Try watching the footage before you get on your high horse!

SayItSweetly · 19/07/2024 06:55

Some of them are mere boys, maybe 10-12. They see their fathers, uncles cousins behave like this and their mothers turning a blind eye, why wouldn't they join in?

decionsdecisions62 · 19/07/2024 07:00

I live about 100 m from harehills lane. It was scary when I thought the trouble was spreading last night. Most of it looked to be teens trying to smash vehicles up and set them on fire.

Harehills is a shithole. It’s full of drug dealers and gangs.
Awful for the innocent people who have to live there. Like most major cities, the nice areas are very expensive to live in.
These people don’t need an excuse to behave like that.
They want it as a no go area.

Yes Oli London the well known reliable new source….sorry not that’s incorrect the well
known unreliable racist news source.

The councillor was trying to de escalate the situation. That’s literally like saying police officers were involved in the rioting as they were spotted at the scene.

Sethera · 19/07/2024 07:15

EsmaCannonball · 18/07/2024 23:14

The true unheard are all the poor and deprived people who have to live among criminals and rioters. They get kicked about by the rich and the feral, but nobody ever pays attention to them.
