Just Stop Oil Jailed

What wonderful news!
I bet they can hardly believe it. Nor can I but I am thrilled-unlike them.

@Tgjjl some people decided to drive on the hard shoulder (possibly because they didn't want to wait in traffic?) and someone collided with them and they died. Is that right?

And you blame just stop oil for that.

cloudsss · 18/07/2024 21:02

I saw a clip of Hallam on Twitter where he said climate breakdown will cause women to be raped on their kitchen tables or similar and I was very weirded out by him. So on a personal level I don’t have much sympathy for him:

Yes I blame Just stop oil for that.

Bromdad · 18/07/2024 21:10

I think some caution is needed when citing China as the problem. When the worldometer data is sorted per capita, China is far from the worst.

Perfect28 · 18/07/2024 21:10

@Tgjjl you understand that you cannot drive in the hard shoulder just because you don't want to sit in a traffic jam? You understand that action is incredibly selfish and dangerous?

The entitlement in this country is outrageous. Consider for a moment the motives behind someone breaking the law to drive in the hard shoulder Vs the activists motives.

So just to be clear, everyone here hating on these activists is fine with the trajectory of our climate and planet? If not, do you actually have anything worthwhile to add? A suggestion of alternative action?

....

It will be a long wait.

I understand that and I don’t drive on the hard shoulder.

However, this chaos was caused by Just stop oil and therefore they are responsible for the consequences IMO. I appreciate you disagree.

You do realise that they are turning people against their cause? And I suspect that is their purpose.

Paul2023 · 18/07/2024 22:13

Surely the irony is they caused more in emissions with traffic stationary?..

I felt sorry for everyone affected but particularly HGV drivers who were stuck with no food, drinks or toilets.. does their human rights not count ?

Perfect28 · 18/07/2024 22:14

@HelenaWaiting I don't think that gaining popular support from people without any power is particularly their goal. I don't think they mind so much about being popular as they do about being right.

StJanetof · 18/07/2024 22:15

Their methods of protest aren’t peaceful and they aren’t very nice people. It’s about time some decent sentences were handed down.

Paul2023 · 18/07/2024 22:18

The Met police’s bill was 1.1 million.

The cost to businesses must have been many many millions.

How can any reasonable people think that blocking ambulances is a worthy idea?

Someone missed their own fathers funeral due to one of these protests.

Pfft. They care about being ‘reality’ stars. Their show is the news rather than Love Island but they want the ‘stardom’ all the same.

The younger ones will all be in well paid professions soon enough - solicitors, barristers, doctors - because mummy and daddy can afford to support their training and have the contacts. Their past will be a badge of pride paraded at dinner parties, before the conversation turns to Jemima’s chances of getting into Oxford and whether they should build an extension on the house in Richmond.

ShirtyCollar · 18/07/2024 20:09

What does ‘show your arse’ mean here? Is it a regional thing?

Oh yes, it is.
It's used by The Greater Inuit people and it's pronounced ar-say, It from an old Norse language carried across by traders and means 'day old fish'.
Commonly used there still I believe.
I often hear people say that it is a term used differently in the UK and that it's quite common. That may-or may not be- the case but, as you have just demonstrated, not everyone knows it in the UK sense, where it is mostly used by the lower orders.
I imagine you are more familiar with it in its Greater Inuit usage and this is why you're a bit confused. Perfectly understandable.

Oh dear another net zero loon who thinks stopping people from getting to work will save the planet.
No doubt you also want to carpet our prime farmland with non recyclable Chinese manufactured solar panels to reduce our food security as well

That's a reach. Net zero is not a bad target, what's your problem with it? If you don't believe in climate change you must have had your eyes shut for decades.
Surely the problem is that these are longer sentences than people are getting for violent crime?

Startingagainandagain · 19/07/2024 09:13

This is a ludicrous sentence especially when you have violent abusers, rapists, thieves and fraudsters getting away with a slap on the wrist...

At a time where prisons are so overcrowded it makes even less sense.

I hope they can appeal that sentence.

LordSnot · 19/07/2024 09:14

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/07/2024 20:50

There's an almost silent thread on FWR right now about a man so got 4 years for beating his partner unconscious while their children watched.

Do I think talking about stopping traffic warrants more? Fuck no. But no one appears to care.

Many posters who care deeply about women and children don't visit or post in FWR. I wouldn't extrapolate anything from that.

OlgaBracley · 19/07/2024 10:55

Those dinosaurs got what was coming to them...they didn't care about net zero and so they were wiped out.
All those times when you could walk from England to Spain-they didn't care about net zero and so the continents moved-serves them right-no more walking around the world!
All those crops failing in pre-revolutionary France, all because they would not stop driving and flying around. If only Marie Antoinette had cared about net zero- the crops wouldn't have failed, the people wouldn't have been fired up to complain about everything else and she would have died with her head in bed.

The planet changes. There has been an Ice Age-continents were connected. Wonderous beasts roamed the earth and died out. The Elizabethans suffered huge prices and famine because of many many summers where it pissed down.

Yes, there is change. There is meant to be otherwise we would be sharing the earth with dinosaurs and living in an Ice Age.

people are easy to fool and they have been fooled by fools who are clever enough to shut down argument by screaming, 'You're killing the earth. You're stealing my future'.

Tis bollocks and if it wasn't bollocks why haven't planes been banned-we managed without them for centuries.

The only thing overheating to destruction is these Net Zero brains.

The length of sentence for what was, ultimately, peaceful protest is absolutely absurd, regardless of whether you agree with their cause. It's a worrying abuse of power, a hugely disproportionate response to the state feeling challenged.

Peaceful protests?
Blocking traffic, disruption to major events, preventing people getting to Funerals and hospital, criminal damage....the list goes on.

How is that Peaceful?!

We need to bin this “peaceful” narrative. They’re not peaceful and they’re not very nice people.

If the UK sank into the sea the world's carbon emissions wouldn't change

It's China they need to protest in but strangely for some reason they're not up for that.

Is it worth pointing out that China emissions come from making goods that are bought/consumed by the the West? Or is that too connections for your brain to make?
