To not shower every day? And....

connemarailoveyou · 18/07/2024 19:17

I don't shower every day. Am I gross? I shower every other evening and on those days I have a proper wash including hair shampoo conditioner etc plus any shaving that needs to be done

Mornings I wash face teeth and put deo on. I think it's ok as I don't smell but wondered am I gross

Also on another entirely different subject, do some ppl never go to parents eve? And if u miss a few does it get mentioned

OP posts:

Yes you're even more so it's summer, you definitely do smell you just can't smell it

ForGreyKoala · 19/07/2024 02:38

This is the wrong place to ask about every other day showering OP. Some MNers will be having an attack of the vapours at the very thought. 😅

I only shower every second day myself unless it is very hot. We aren't all a sweaty mess every day.

Gosh, how clever you are, to know people smell when you have no idea who they even are.

Get over yourself.

Toilet paper. Amazing stuff!

If you got shit on your arm would you just wipe it off with toilet paper?

Back to the OP - if I had a bidet I'd probably skip the odd shower but in normal circumstances I'm not letting my genitals and bum go for longer than 24 hours without a proper wash. Wiping with paper doesn't count.

Mamai100 · 19/07/2024 02:46

I think the people who can't fathom not showering daily are people who are likely to sweat more.

I'm not a sweaty person, even on a beach holiday I don't get particularly sweaty.

My feet never smell sweaty, if I forget deodorant I don't get smelly pits etc.

I do tend to shower daily just because I have oily hair and I like it looking squeaky clean so I wash it daily. However, I often skip days if I'm in the house all day.

I have a nose like a blood hound and I definitely don't smell, ever.

I never understand why people wouldn’t have a daily shower. You can tell those who don’t, the soap dodgers (who’ll make up various excuses like saving the planet or having been told by a Dr it’s bad for their skin).

Even a two minute shower can do the job.

I never understand the people who are so thick that they can't understand that anyone they encounter who smells obviously either hasn't showered/bathed for quite some time, or that the problem very likely is their laundry habits.

Various skin experts say it is unnecessary and bad for your skin to shower every day - but oh no, MN "experts" always know better, based on their own narrow little world.

Strokethefurrywall · 19/07/2024 02:48

Oh good. This topic again.

Toilet paper to wipe your bum after a poo is not the same as washing!! I think the old fashioned strip wash was more for when not many people had showers so the alternative of filling a bath was more costly.
To those who dont shower daily do you go out and use public toilets? Sit on the toilet seat that has been shared by others then not wash after?

Oh dear heaven!! Yes, of course I use public toilets, often in fact as I am out walking a lot. The day I start worrying that I might catch something off a toilet seat is the day I know I'm ready for the knackers yard.

Honestly, some of you really need to get a grip!

Redhothoochycoocher · 19/07/2024 05:57

Showering every day actually isn't recommended. It upsets your immune system apparently. I have very sensitive skin which is triggered by water and showering every day would be awful for me. I shower about 3 times a week and wash my hair once or twice a week. I shower more if I need it eg after I've exercised, if I've been sweaty or got dirty etc. But if it's been a boring week of sitting at my desk I've got no need to shower more than every other day

skippy67 · 19/07/2024 06:02

YABU to post about this topic again. If you're cool with your showering habits, crack on. Why do people who don't shower every day feel the need to tell everyone?

Gwenhwyfar · 19/07/2024 06:05

Anyone with dry skin should not be showering every day. As my dermatologist said, we know which parts of the body we need to wash every day and we can wash those without a shower.
MNers are sceptical about sink washes though so they are not the people to ask about this.

Gwenhwyfar · 19/07/2024 06:08

TomatoSandwiches · 18/07/2024 20:27

I was out and about today completing errands and I got so many horrible whiffs walking past people, I think some don't realise they smell so musty... like old Pillows or something. I wouldn't point it out but imo you can tell when someone hasn't bathed/showered.

Well you obviously can't because if they had washed in the sink instead of showering they wouldn't smell
Bad smell is more likely to come from inadequate deodorant, such as one that is not an antiperspirant or not applying enough, or, as is most likely in this particular case, not washing clothes.

Doctor's advice is not an excuse!
And you don't smell if you wash and use antiperspirant.

Delatron · 18/07/2024 21:47

I think genitals need a wash every day. Let’s be honest. Even if by some miracle you don’t sweat for 2 days..

And therefore to wash that area it’s quicker to jump in the shower than stand around naked with a fresh (hopefully) flannel every day, splashing water everywhere.

It really is not quicker. Also, you can use your hands, no need for a flannel.

I just don’t get this strip wash malarkey, it must be so messy, how do you rinse your armpits and undercarriage at the sink? Surely it’s far easier to hop in the shower for a few minutes rather than standing at a sink washing your bits, it all sounds so awkward and messy.

OP this is why you don't listen to MNers on this subject. They can't do a simple sink wash.

tuttuttutt · 19/07/2024 06:18

Genitals and bums need washing daily as you're using the toilet daily. It's gross not to.

Auburngal · 19/07/2024 06:18

Shower twice a day when holiday in very hot weather/

Home - every other day as hair is awful if not washed like this.

I actually always attend all my kids parents evenings and would never miss, but there was one tonight and it got me thinking I wonder if some ppl just never go

Yes some people don’t go (like my mother) and it is neglect and your DC will remember.

FateReset · 19/07/2024 06:19

I wish everyone would shower before work, isn't it good manners to start the day freshly washed?

Running water washes off the grime, sweat, grease, dead skin cells, other bodily fluids. Baths turn it into soup! Flannels just spread it around.

Any job where you're trapped in a room with colleagues, public facing, attending meetings why wouldn't you shower before work? People who don't nearly always smell less than fresh, which isn't fair when you're trapped in hot meeting rooms or working alongside. One of my colleagues always smelled like her dogs mixed with stale cooking mixed with musty umbrella. I used to feel sick in meetings. She had no idea and used to boast about how great her skin looks as we're 'not designed' to take daily showers!?

Different outside of work, i think people should do what suits them. Nobody's forced to stand too close in school playground or trapped in same room.

Not showering before work is like wearing your clean uniform to bed then not bothering to change in morning as it saves time!

AimieDaisy · 19/07/2024 06:32

I shower twice a day, but live in a hot country and work out daily with a swim afterwards.
I never used to shower so much when I lived in England. I was the same as you. My skin was a lot dryer weirdly, as I always thought the more you showered the dryer your skin became. But my dry spotty skin is lovely now and I’m so sure it’s due to showers.
Anyway…
If you feel clean and that you don’t smell then no problem.

Thepeopleversuswork · 19/07/2024 06:50

Isn’t a strip wash massively more hassle than a shower though? That’s what I don’t get.

You have to take multiple rags into the bathroom and scrub. You can’t use the same flannel for your arse as for your vagina and then you need a new one for your face?

You have to wash them after each use presumably or there’s no point? So tons of additional washing. Where do you put the flannels after use?

Also as others have mentioned you really need to apply soap and water to your arse and genitals daily. You may get away without a daily shower if you don’t sweat much, yes, but no one’s arse is going to smell good after 24 hours without water. Particularly in hot weather.

And no, toilet paper doesn’t handle it. If a pet shat on your kitchen floor would you wipe it with kitchen roll and leave it? No. It’s the same principle. You need to apply water and detergent to kill the bacteria. Just wiping it isn’t going to handle this.

spikeandbuffy · 19/07/2024 07:38

@Thepeopleversuswork loads of reasons

It's cheaper as less hot water
You can stay half dressed if it's cold
If you don't have the mobility or are worried about falling in the shower
If you don't have a shower and only have a bath
You can sit down and do it

I use a flannel in the shower and also for a hot cloth cleanser on my face, different ones but it's still only two and they don't take up much washing space

Thepeopleversuswork · 19/07/2024 07:46

@spikeandbuffy

But if you’re half dressed you can’t be cleaning your arse and bits. There’s no point just cleaning your armpits. Cleaning your arse and genital area is the real objective here.

And even a cold water wash is better than scrubbing with a flannel.

If you only have a bath why wouldn’t you just slightly fill the bath?

Because some people can't get in the bath or they're scared of slipping or it's winter and they have no heating and on and on
Half dressed means you undress the part you're washing, so same as if you are doing a bed bath on someone you keep part of them covered for dignity

Someone will come on and say oh I didn't mean disabled people but either a strip wash is fine for everyone or nobody
