To do my make up on the train?

Does it bother you when you see people doing this? If so, why?

OP posts:
Nottherealslimshady · 16/07/2024 09:47

The only thing that would bother me is spraying (asthmatic, no aerosols in my house at all) or removing things from your body, tweezing/nail cutting.

Krumblina · 16/07/2024 09:48

As long as it doesn't make mess and no sprays are used then it's fine.
I don't understand why it would bother someone in that case as it has zero impact on them

PeepChirp · 16/07/2024 09:49

I had a colleague who would file her nails at the desk and snort up snot sniffles instead of blowing her nose discreetly like a normal person you could hear her hoiking up and swallowing snot.

abracadabra1980 · 16/07/2024 09:50

In old fashioned terms it speaks of lack of etiquette. In modern terms, a bit immature and chavvy.

spaceagemat · 16/07/2024 09:50

Its a bit inconsiderate of others in my opinion, make up is dusty and can smell quite strongly. Its also a bit unseemly to be doing it on the train if you care about such things.

It isn't as bad as what I have witnessed before which is people cutting and filing their nails on the train, no I don't want to breath in your nail dust or have to bat away your finger nails as they ping about the carriage!

ricecrispiecakes · 16/07/2024 08:54

@Gingerdancedbackwards but what does that have to do with make-up and why does it make putting mascara on unhygienic? Confused

because all that shit settles onto your brushes and slap.
But I live in hope that those putting on mascara on the tube will end up with a brush in their eye

FourFiveSix · 16/07/2024 09:50

I would frighten people, and drop my makeup doing it on a train.
However if you saw one of my daughters you would be amazed, although she has reduced her routine now.

It used to involve, lots of foundations, triangles, and all sort of amazing layers .
But the end results, transforming, and very glamourous.

To be honest her lesser efforts now, are much nicer, makeup but better. 😊
She is such a beauty

RadiantRainbow · 16/07/2024 09:50

I really like it when women do their makeup on public transport 🥰

MillyNair · 16/07/2024 09:51

northchesterforest · 16/07/2024 08:19

But I enjoy make up?

Why do you have to do it on the train? Can't you wake up a little earlier or something?

I would find it odd to see a man shaving on the train.

I'm not sure why I don't like it, but it makes me feel uncomfortable.

People who put their makeup on during train journeys seem oddly vulnerable. It feels as though they are either narcissists (it is like a performance) or not that well organised. It's kind of annoying.

A bit ( very ) mean

Chickenribbon · 16/07/2024 09:51

Just impressed you can!

My coordination is so rubbish I can’t put make up on without looking like a 3 year old has been let loose in parents make up bag.

you do you and if this works for you - go for it.

far far more ‘antisocial’ things on trains that I see such as people using devices with no headphones or super smelly food - that would actually bother me.

A touch of lippy and mascara just doesn’t feature on my radar!

mrstrickland · 16/07/2024 09:51

It used to bother me until I stopped to think about why and couldn't come up with a valid reason! So now it doesn't bother me at all and think its fascinating.

KreedKafer · 16/07/2024 09:52

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I find it very weird that anyone would be annoyed or disgusted by seeing a woman putting on makeup.

MouseofCommons · 16/07/2024 09:53

It's fine. I saw a young woman do this recently. She got on looking fresh faced and got off like a beige shop dummy. (I'm very nosy and was fascinated by it as I don't own make up).

Adviceneeeeded · 16/07/2024 09:57

I think if it's taking you longer than 10 minutes, it's too much. For me personally. obviously everyone has their own preferences. But for those spending 1 hour plus doing make up, I just wander how it must affect your skin?

But on the train, no it wouldn't bother me. People can do what they like as long as it not hurting anyone.

MillyNair · 16/07/2024 09:57

Maybe they should have a special makeup compartment on the train?

Miffylou · 16/07/2024 09:57

It doesn’t exactly bother me, but I always think it’s odd. Either you care about other people seeing your natural face without make-up or you don’t, if you do, why don’t the people on the train count?

GoBackToTheStart · 16/07/2024 09:59

I do it, but usually only when it's a long train journey or I have to be up very early. I see no point in getting up even earlier (eg before 5:30) to do my make up for a meeting starting four hours later, in London, when I have a full three hours on the train to kill first.

I wouldn't do it if I had someone next to me though.

Nanny0gg · 16/07/2024 10:01

northchesterforest · 16/07/2024 08:15

I can't see how my particular routine is unhygienic at all (no spritz or spray!) and I think life is already busy and stressful to have to worry about keeping up appearances...
God forbid someone sees the before and after transformation in public?

The hate all feels very 1950s to me. Not sure it's any difference to eating a sandwich on the train? ('Oh god forbid, eat your food in private!)

I was born in the 50s.

I rarely eat walking along in the street - I don't see the need

And I don't like seeing makeup applied in public.

Might just be my upbringing or the sound of my mother's voice in my ear but that's how I feel about it. Totally unnecessary in my view. Which will have no impact on anyone else, as people that do that don't care what I or others think

Garlickest · 16/07/2024 10:02

I used to do mine on the Tube every morning. I wasn't being disorganised, it was a conscious choice to make constructive use of the first leg of my commute - I got on the Northern Line near one end, so always had a seat, and would be on that train for a good 40 minutes.

When I was getting an overground train to another city, I'd do my makeup there too. And, with apologies to squeamish MNers, I plucked my eyebrows on planes because the light's so good!

123letsblaze · 16/07/2024 10:02

Crack on. I can't imagine how pathetic you must be to get upset about something like that.

HaddawayAndShite · 16/07/2024 10:06

With all the bumps I don't understand how people do their make up in moving vehicles. I personally couldn't do that as I don't have the skills and I like to apply make up to a freshly cleaned face. The only hygiene aspect that does seem icky is if you're using unwashed hands to rub stuff in (terrible for you), then don't wipe and clean your hands afterwards and touch handles etc it's gross, but people, by large are gross anyway and handles probably have worse things on them than someone's make up and face skin grime. Obviously sprays and powders that go everywhere are a different matter.

Garlickest · 16/07/2024 10:10

@Nanny0gg, I was also born in the 50s and felt quite cheeky when I ate a cookie in the street yesterday 😂 We used to get detention if spotted eating in the street while in uniform.

Don't tell me you still sit with your legs neatly crossed at the ankles and feign fascination with anything a man says?!

Singersong · 16/07/2024 10:11

Makeup stinks? I've heard it all now.

You must have a supersonic sense of smell to smell that over the stench of BO and KFC.

Coffeesnob11 · 16/07/2024 10:13

I commute by train and then tube and there are many things that bother me but this isnt one of them. Most of the time I wish I could ask for tips as I am useless at applying my own makeup. I am in awe of the ones who apply it on packed tubes from their lap.
I am far more bothered about the fact there are people who urinate on the seats (tubes and trains), those begging or begging by asking you to buy tissues etc, those who think their bag deserves a seat when there are obviously disabled people standing, those who are watching porn and think it's acceptable in a crowded public place, those who have their affair partner on one phone and their wife on the other phone, those who ignore the people who need help (a woman choking is the latest example). Makeup comes quite a long way down any list.
