To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

By and large though England tend to do far better than the other Home nations

Well yes. They’ve far more people to choose from. Wales should be compared with North London rather than the whole of England.
What’s that got to do with endless bloody boring chat in every type of media for one team doing well and little expect sports reports for the others?

In football but Scotland and Wales do very well at rugby.

How exhausting and expensive

She wanted to make a statement, but nobody ever made it a big deal.

Another Scottish whinger.

Dave is decidedly English in that Engerland dressing up as St George for sporting events kind of way. Bizarre that you would think he was Scottish!

Big difference between not supporting the country you moved to and supporting the opposition to the country you live in

Quite.

The "anyone but England" mentality is pathetic.

Does he wear a suit of armour with a dragon under his arm?

The everyone has to support another team just because we live on the same land mass is equally pathetic

Wow. The hatred is tangible.

Been a lot of obvious anti English posts on here of late. People need to get a grip.

I have an Irish friend OP who supports any other team than England. She would go to pubs to watch a game dressed in the opposition football shirt. Nobody cares.

I think your friend is the OP 😄

I don't like football (AT ALL). I therefore don't support England even though I'm English because I ultimately don't care who wins.

If you are, for instance, from Spain then I can totally see why you'd support them over England and I can see if you are from Spain but it's an Italy against England match then you wouldn't care so wouldn't support either. But to actively cheer on a team that you don't support just because they are against the English just seems incredibly childish especially as you've chosen to live here.

It makes more sense than supporting somewhere miles away that you have no connection to, just to get at people. That's truly pathetic.

I'm not English, I support my home country but I like England to do well for my English partner, half English kids, English friends and because it's my home now.

SarksandMpencer · 15/07/2024 14:36

I’m English and I don’t support Scotland in international football any more than I’d support Albania.

They can take the piss all they want about last night; when have Scotland ever got anywhere near winning anything? They’ve all on to win a corner. They usually turn up, humiliate themselves, and then go home.

They go on about how England expect to win - I don’t know a single England fan who thought we’d probably win last night. We hoped we would and that we might, but that’s completely different. Most knew it would be a big ask.

I'm not english but I've been living in England for years now, I support my national (EU) football team first, but I also support England each time they play (and when they play against my national team, I just feel I can't lose either way).

It's not for the team, I'm pretty sure Kane and Southgate don't need to know that A, from London, supports them, but it's for my english friends, for my local community, it's a bonding thing.
I love this country, I love its people, so supporting the football team doesn't take much effort.
I've been lucky to experience massive wins with my national team and I'd love for my english friends, neighbours, colleagues to experience that too.

See you have a reason, a good one.
We have English friends and I was glad for the team to get into the final for their sake, but after that? Blah.
they weren’t good enough so didn’t deserve the win.

Nope, from the use of "feck" I'd say Irish.

I'm Scottish, don't know anyone who uses feck. We all just say fuck.

Greenkindness · 15/07/2024 14:43

To be honest you sound like you give as good as you get.

I think taking it as all part of the chat. I work in a multinational team with lots of people not supporting England. There was ribbing today, that’s ok - us England supporters were happy we went as far as we did.

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 14:45

At least you’re honest! Not that the Scot’s would give a monkey’s.
Nor would I care if English friends didn’t support my national team, which they don’t. They might be pleased for me but certainly not enthusiastic in any other way. Which is fine.
And yes, it would still be fine if they lived there but cheered for England too…

AzureAnt · 15/07/2024 14:45

Insert the name of any other country and their would be howls of racism. Why are the English expected to tolerate it?

Criteria16 · 15/07/2024 14:46

May I ask you why? It seems odd and I am genuinely interested in hearing why do you actively and consistently chose to support the opposition?
What is in the England sports teams you dislike?

Oh dear Dave.

The red trouser brigade, they love a costume at cricket! No idea if he does it for England football or not, but he has quite the selection of retro England shirts, yes including the sodding one from the 60s…
