To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

Any jobs going at your place OP? Looking for a job where I can mess around on mumsnet all day and still get paid.

Indeed. Summer innit, very quiet time of year for us as we work with a load of Europeans…
lucky for Dave, eh? I would hate to think what he would have been putting out in the global Socials by the end of the day…
possibly declaring that all none English can all F off back to where they came from 😅

Yes basically! But somehow work colleagues xenophobia is also my fault! How dare I say I was a neutral hoping for a good final…

let’s just say he was tired and emotional. He’s also a Man U fan so is going through a tough time in general 😅

Changing your tune there aren’t you. In the OP you said you support England’s opposition, and now you’re apparently neutral. I imagine because none of this happened.
No one cares who you support or if you’re neutral, it’s this endless anti England crap (which really has nothing to do with the football) I think most of us are fed up with.

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 13:51

So if I support - say Liverpool. And both Liverpool and Man U are in the Champions League then Liverpool get knock out
Would anyone realistically expect me to support Man U??

Unless people are regularly going to England games then they're not really supporters. Most people in England will have mixed loyalties anyway. I favour Wales at rugby and football and England at cricket for example. There are no rules, unless you're Norman Tebbit.

Wakemeuuuup · 15/07/2024 13:48

I'm Irish but living in England over 20 years.

Always support England unless they're playing Ireland.

England is where we work, kids were born and go to school etc etc . It makes sense to support them

And your kids are English!
Same with my Dad and his family ,he emigrated to England when he was 11 he's 82 now he supports England mainly, and him and his family have always been big Man u fans
I do remember us all dancing round the lounge though in 1990 when Ireland got through to the Quarter finals in on penalties.

EllaVoday · 15/07/2024 13:53

I think everyone should be free to support and not support who they want.

Here was a snap last night from my Pakistani cousin who lives there and was born and raised there. She was gutted.

My other cousin supported Spain even though she’s never been there.

No one judged anyone!

The only people I know who don't support another UK team in a championship type thing are all pretend casual types tbf

No, I told HIM I was a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.
When asked.
because I didn’t want to start a whole fucking THING and I also know he really cared.
But that was enough for him to start in ‘what, so you weren’t supporting England. Why not??’
’well, I’m not a English m, am I?’
and then off he went on a rant.

No but don’t go to Manchester and spend the whole tournament saying how much you hate people from Manchester, openly support any team Man U were playing and celebrate when they lose. Quick lesson on how not to be a knob for you.

LlynTegid · 15/07/2024 13:58

I would have thought the OPs colleague would be used to people not supporting a team they have any connection with. Or are you in the rare position of having no Manchester United fans at your place of work?

You could celebrate a Man U defeat in Manchester, alongside those who support Man City. Though I agree with you about hating Mancunians.

It’s not what I observed when Wales progressed further than England, to be honest.
I have zero interest in football so I don’t support any team. I was slightly dreading an England win for the inevitable going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about it on the tv and social media for the next zillion years though. I didn’t actively wish them to lose because I don’t have enough interest in it to do that, but England fans and the media do the team no favours.

Do you live in England? If so, that might be why it would feel like they were going on and on about it, but considering the men’s team hasn’t won anything in nearly 60 years this is a massive assumption. Sometimes the most vocal voices are the negative ones unfortunately, so that’s why I said ‘a lot’, rather than 100% of England fans support the other home nations despite being hated by all.

Leftphalange100 · 15/07/2024 11:51

To be honest if I'd made a home in a country that I was happy and settled in, I'd support them. But that is up to you at the end of the day, its your choice. Different if they were playing against my home country but if not my home country I'd support them also as the country I live in.

Precisely my view. If you’ve settled
reasonably well in a country why would you not support them outside of them playing your home country.

Dh (not born here) does same as the OP and I swear it’s to wind me up!

Nope. I’m in Wales. They always go on and on about it. Every bit of chat between presenters on Radio 2, the news, BBC News app updates. And it’s always the same.

Edit: and I think this is something that does wind up the other home nations. National media going on and on, not just in sports programmes or sports news, when England are in a tournament, but much, much less if it’s not England but one of the other home nations. It’s very obvious. England does not equal Britain.

I definitely agree the whole ITS COMING HOME thing needs toning down, and can see how this is annoying.

I think people should be a bit careful labelling things with such strong words like ‘threatening and harassment.’

OP didn’t say this man had harassed her or seemed threatening. She doesn’t exactly seem intimidated.

Imagine they took your advice and went to HR on the basis of harassment over that conversation? Poor bloke could lose his job!

I said it could be threatening depending on tone, not that the colleague was in this case. I did question what op might have said, as they clearly enjoy triggering people.

I didn’t make any recommendations regarding hr, but they are trained to deal with this kind of thing if required. You don’t lose your job for a one off snarky comment. But repeatedly telling a (foreign) colleague that England lost because of them, that they should be supporting England etc. could, under some circumstances, be bullying and harassment.

Because you aren’t interested in the sport?
Because the endless going on and on is boring?
I’m British living in Britain (Wales) but I think this is, as I’ve said before, too reminiscent of the ‘Tebbit Test’ to be comfortable to read. Google it if you don’t remember it.

I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

So you just support the opposition purely to be against England? Support who you like, you're irrelevant really but that seems strange to me. To just support anyone in order to not support England seems a bit attention seeking, like you want a reaction from someone.

Longma · 15/07/2024 14:14

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 13:51

But that isn't what you suggested in your OP.

You said you frequently support the opposition in matches. This suggests who you support varies depending on who England is playing perhaps.

Hence asking:
is it more than you don't support England and support someone else entirely? So the same team in each competition.
Or that you support 'anyone but England'?

Because the answer makes a difference in this kind of situation.

By and large though England tend to do far better than the other Home nations
