To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

At least you’re honest! Not that the Scot’s would give a monkey’s.
Nor would I care if English friends didn’t support my national team, which they don’t. They might be pleased for me but certainly not enthusiastic in any other way. Which is fine.
And yes, it would still be fine if they lived there but cheered for England too…

But they do give a monkeys hence the ‘anyone but English’ etc Confused

May I ask you why? It seems odd and I am genuinely interested in hearing why do you actively and consistently chose to support the opposition?
What is in the England sports teams you dislike?

The over expectation, the frequent mediocre performances, the ENDLESS media coverage and the fact that they gloat when they win and sulk when they lose… oh, and the fact that they seem to expect other nations to support their team for some reason 😂

Never mind the football, I can't work out who I'm supporting on this thread - sad yet passionate Dave with his blow up dragon or goady yet not obsessed OP.

Why so rude? You literally asked people’s opinions on this…

Neither. I feel sorry for the rest of their work colleagues putting up with both of them.

‘I'm not English, but if they're playing any other team then I support England.’

That is big of you. Bit random though. I’d probably choose a team that won more TBH… Brazil, Germany maybe?
I mean if you are going to support a national team that’s not yours, make it a good one!

Ah the classic only support a team who are going to win. I think used to have this attitude when I was about 5.

Do you not think there will be a lot of media coverage in Spain right now?
I honestly dont think England fan,s do expect t to win ,but once they have go to the final its nice to have a bit of hope
Same as any other team
And where on earth are fans expecting, people from other nations to support England apart from Prhaps " Dave" who if you are being as antagonistic towards him irl as you appear to be on this thread I can see why he might be a bit pissed off with you

I'm team Dave. He throws his heart and soul into sporting events and is currently heartbroken.

Ouch, still some smarting from the result…

I’m Scottish, live in Scotland. I have no interest in football but I really wanted England to win, would’ve been nice for them. I was in England on holiday during the last Euros when they did quite well and the atmosphere was great in the run-up and during the matches. It’s petty when people from other parts of the UK support any team but England.

Would’ve found the endless 1966 World Cup-esque romanticised reminiscences on any football related news commentaries for the next ten years kind of irritating, but hey-ho. Can’t say the Scots, Welsh or Irish would be any different if they won an international competition…..
I do think Spain played better though and deserved the win. I feel sorry for the players and manager who have been turned on by their fans - it’s really cruel and nasty.

I imagine their coworkers are hearing a lot of hissing about famines and dragons and feel utterly bemused

Spain deserved to win. England deserved to come second. Both pretty impressive really

It’s not what I observed when Wales progressed further than England, to be honest.
I have zero interest in football so I don’t support any team. I was slightly dreading an England win for the inevitable going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about it on the tv and social media for the next zillion years though. I didn’t actively wish them to lose because I don’t have enough interest in it to do that, but England fans and the media do the team no favours.

Absolutely! Couldn’t have put it better myself.

lolly792 · 15/07/2024 15:22

OP needs a duvet day - they're taking England's achievement in getting to the final very badly 😂

derxa · 15/07/2024 15:27

cardibach · 15/07/2024 14:08

Nope. I’m in Wales. They always go on and on about it. Every bit of chat between presenters on Radio 2, the news, BBC News app updates. And it’s always the same.

Edit: and I think this is something that does wind up the other home nations. National media going on and on, not just in sports programmes or sports news, when England are in a tournament, but much, much less if it’s not England but one of the other home nations. It’s very obvious. England does not equal Britain.

Edited

Precisely. Good Morning Britain is especially guilty of this. England team is referred to 'us' and 'we'. And 'making the nation proud'. I thought the nation was the UK.
