To NOT support England ???

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

You are being a obtuse. There is normal football banter and then there was that. I have to say bigotry rather than racism as English isn't a race. Google the article. I imagine there would be a massive uproar if it been an English newspaper. I didn't mind Paddy Powers adverts though. It was light hearted. The Irish seemed better in that regard.

As PP said before it's actually a testament to "the English" that this thread hasn't been deleted and that people are willing to actually pipe up and defend themselves.

Same, my husband is Irish but lived in England most of his life. If Ireland are playing England he will support Ireland, if England are playing anyone else then he will support them, as his wife and children are English (well the children are half Irish, but unless Ireland is playing thats not relevant to this particular debate)

I think it is quite clearly dislike and hate. You can read it in that posters posts whereas some of the Irish commenting it has a different vibe which I have no issue with. I don't actually care if no one supports us from the home nations anyway. I wouldn't expect it.

I'm pretty sure the poster has confused the (Irish) Nationalist with the (Scottish) National paper. And might have also confused the nationalities of who they're responding to.

Background context - the National paper posted a shit "joke" headline on Saturday, full of stereotypes and were forced to issue an apology after a number of complaints were made

Most England fans were realistic about our chances but you obviously think we believe all the hype.
