To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

English people are not indignant that someone might not support their team. I mean, come on.’

Oh yes they are! Just read through the posts - still it’s heartening than only 30% have voted that you SHOULD have to support England if you live here 😅
Maybe Reform could add that to their mad manifesto for the next election, unless they’re planning on chucking all of us Johnny Foreigners out anyway 😀

And England won the Rugby World Cup in 2003. Ireland have never won a knockout match in the rugby World Cup, but I thought it was their ‘main’ sport.

I would say going by the sport played everywhere in Ireland that I have lived that GAA is Irelands 'main sport'. Whether it's football or hurling would depend on where you live really.

I suppose because there’s little opposition.

If you are Irish most English don't think of them as foreigners actually. Don't know why you are persisting on trying to portray us as racist.

AngryBird6122 · 15/07/2024 20:43

YANBU to the OP you posted. You shouldn't have to support a football team just because you live there or for any other reason.

If you however actively and passionately want any other team in the world to beat that team because (insert reason - colonialism for example) then that would be U, and quite odd. And obsessively hateful.

Mate, your on a thread with 100s of replies from indignant people and it's not the first of these I've seen over the past few days. The OP wound everyone up and then watched them go. I'm not saying everyone sits around discussing it but if an Irish/Scottish/French/insert all of the other countries with beef against England gave a little poke like the OP has someone will bite. Of course 'Not All English people are like this' but there are plenty. Just like if you poke an Irish person in the right place you will get a reaction of sorts.

That's all part of the 'sport' giving the right poke at the right time.

On social media but that is literally almost the whole point of social media these days! Equally. dont be disingenuous, the100s of posts are not indignation though are they, many of them are pointing out that English people don’t give a shit as many of us don’t think along diversity lines as simply the Irish and the English, the English makeup is so diverse that it would ludicrous to think like that in 2024, this is why many are pointing out that the OP is wrong and it is more likely a personality clash. Equally, many posts have been asking what former colony the OP comes from as they genuinely believe the average person from England cares about that. You may feel it is a certain way as you are living in Ireland but I just don’t think it features on the average English person’s radar.

You'd be wrong, Hurling and Gaelic football are our 'main' sports

Nope, they’re not, Really no one cares and no one is being indignant. I know you hoped it would go that way, but it hasn’t. Sorry we aren’t as ‘reform’ as you hoped (you like bringing reform up too don’t you).

SherbetSweeties · 15/07/2024 20:48

This is the side of football I cannot stand. I like football and enjoy watching if but it’s a game and yes it was disappointing but like you say Spain were the better team and we lost.

Mintchocco · 15/07/2024 20:48

Not unreasonable not to support England, unreasonable to start a goady thread disguised as being about supporting the football team

x2boys · 15/07/2024 19:26

Well that doesn't make sense as any team that plays against Wales is a rival surely ?

Can I take it you don't generally have an interest in sports?

DanielGault · 15/07/2024 20:50

Rainbowsponge · 15/07/2024 20:21

I know 😂😂😂 they’re such whingers when you use their own tactics on them!

I have no idea who they are. Or what their tactics might be. I just disagree with you.

K37529 · 15/07/2024 20:53

I don’t support England because they don’t support their own team. Look at all the hate those two boys got for missing the penalties at the last euros against Italy. Made it to the finals which is a great achievement in itself, but still so much hate from their own people.

DanielGault · 15/07/2024 20:53

That's perfect then. Other countries will enjoy taking the piss, England don't care and nobody gets hurt 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m Scottish. Your ‘anyone but England’ disgusts me and so many other Scots. If I’m being generous it marks you out to me as narrow minded and bigoted. There are so many vile racists in Scotland that think this sort of attitude is ‘just banter’. Pathetic.

NinaPersson · 15/07/2024 21:02

Of course you don’t have to support them. However I know lots of English people who were cheering on and hoping the Scottish team would get through.

Edited to add: I was cheering on the Scotland team but now think why did I do that seeing how much some Scottish people wanted England beat.

Remind me again, what is the best result the Scots have had in the euros?

The OP isn't scottish, so what's your point?

It's sad. I see Scottish people as my fellow countrymen. We're all from the UK. Also my dearly and recently departed mum was Scottish and so I have a soft spot for Scotland. It was her home and part of my heritage.

I'd be delighted if Scotland made the final id England hadnt and I'd support them. It's a shame we can't all get along.
