To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

Well, it’s not come home. It wasn’t coming home. It’s unlikely to come home anytime soon for the Men’s team.
But at least we have teams like Spain to watch and show the rest of us how to actually play football

"No, I won't thanks. I feel quite comfortable in my choices in who I support from game to game. And as I explained, it's the media that irritate me enough to stop me supporting England. Not the people, or the team or the manager."

I give up 😁 I can't tell whether you're deliberately missing the point or if you're just on the wind up here but you carry on and support whatever team you like and cheer them on to your little hearts content.

But they are a good team. Or do you get to the final on a rotation basis now? Win a raffle? Draw straws?

They're an OK team but they're not world class, a lot of the players completely over rated like Kane and Bellingham, they were never going to beat Spain in fairness

Don't you need to understand the rules first??

Well we wouldn’t watch Ireland for that, that’s for sure

‘I don't mind banter but some stuff has been proper hatred particularly from Scots.’

Oh poor little England, are the mean Scots not being nice?? Have you tried saying ‘Stop it, I don’t like it’?? 😂

Are you six?

wellington77 · 15/07/2024 20:16

I do find it a bit silly when people have that mentality “ anyone but England” if you see England and the people as the former colony and colonisers then there must be some sort of hatred there and I don’t get why would you live there? Are you just using it for economic reasons? You can support who you want but find it odd why you wouldn’t. Also you do realise that unless your really old no English person was involved in Empire. Most of the country were dirt poor anyways when it was going on.

Oh, thanks. I was waiting for your permission. In case it has escaped your attention, I disagree with you. So I don't need persuading. You don't need to 'give up'. You can just go away.

Well, this is it - OP is very happy to profit from a country built on things she apparently finds reprehensible. Worse than English people who live here because they have no choice in family ties!

Probably doesn't work.

"As to the rest of our sins, they are indeed hideous, but it's pretty nasty to bring them up on a thread about football. Whatever makes you feel better though."

Just seen this little nugget. You're absolutely on the wind up.

The indignation is a fallacy though, seen as many people just don’t care as they have a diverse heritage with friends who are the same, it is ridiculous to make out they do care as much as you say they do. They are excited about getting through to the final of a major tournament as I am sure Irish fans would be if they did the same. I don’t think I’ve heard once anyone say in pubs when watching the football or friends barbecues watching the football, ‘is anyone really pissed off about the Irish winding us up about our quality of play or losing to the Spanish’; sorry but it doesn’t even feature on their radar. Maybe, in different circles or different parts of the country but I’m in the south east and it is not even mentioned.

Mate, your on a thread with 100s of replies from indignant people and it's not the first of these I've seen over the past few days. The OP wound everyone up and then watched them go. I'm not saying everyone sits around discussing it but if an Irish/Scottish/French/insert all of the other countries with beef against England gave a little poke like the OP has someone will bite. Of course 'Not All English people are like this' but there are plenty. Just like if you poke an Irish person in the right place you will get a reaction of sorts.

That's all part of the 'sport' giving the right poke at the right time.

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 20:27

"I think a lot of this is 'wind them up and watch them go'. I'm in Ireland and a lot of people were supporting Spain but its not actually that deep, if England would have played well and won there would have a general consensus of fair play to them.

I think more people find it funny that it seems to annoy a lot of English people very much when they support anyone but England and that's where the fun actually lies - watching the indignation. It's a bit of a sport in itself, mean maybe but relations between the UK and Ireland haven't exactly been stellar lately so I can't see it changing any time soon"

I don't disagree with your first paragraph at all. The second one completely misses the point though @Buddysbunda. English people (at least none that I've encountered) are not indignant that someone might not support their team. I mean, come on. Be real. There are fans from all over the world, why would England fans expect support from other countries?
It's wearing being the subject of hate and it's nothing to do with football teams. It's just that during the big competitions football is used as a convenient excuse to express their hatred (and I'm not talking about people with genuine football rivalries or people complaining about the media before anyone decides to misinterpret that).

But where are the indignant people? No one is wound up by op’s post, which is clearly made up for reactions anyway.

That's not what I said though, I said that they support anyone but England, there is a difference there between not supporting England and actively supporting who ever they are against.

As an English person in Ireland I can't say that I have received any hatred and like I said I don't think much is hatred here, its just fun and games. The over reaction of 'they all hate us' when Irish people are just chilling, taking the piss to wind people up is part of the indignant reaction that I spoke of.

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 20:37

I don’t think anyone would be holding Ireland up as an example of footballing excellence. Still, better team spirit then any England men’s team - but you could say that about any team from Nigeria to Iceland.

And England won the Rugby World Cup in 2003. Ireland have never won a knockout match in the rugby World Cup, but I thought it was their ‘main’ sport.
