To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

That the problem with your colonial past, left the door open for other people to come back to England legally… bit rich moaning about it now!

You’re strangely obsessed with our ‘colonial past’ op and clearly hoping you’ll find someone who has an issue with you living in England. I’ll say it again op..no one cares.

Ah. I’ll bet the post was an excuse to bring up the Palestine issue. The subject isn’t as active on MN as it used to be, and they’re trying to sneak in another pointless debate about it….

no, but in response to a poster saying people are still going on about stuff that happened 500 years ago, I was merely pointing out that England has been fucking up politically all over the world as recently as the 20th Century.

I think a lot of this is 'wind them up and watch them go'. I'm in Ireland and a lot of people were supporting Spain but its not actually that deep, if England would have played well and won there would have a general consensus of fair play to them.

I think more people find it funny that it seems to annoy a lot of English people very much when they support anyone but England and that's where the fun actually lies - watching the indignation. It's a bit of a sport in itself, mean maybe but relations between the UK and Ireland haven't exactly been stellar lately so I can't see it changing any time soon.

I don't mind banter but some stuff has been proper hatred particularly from Scots.

I think there are some odd notions of ‘English people’ and ‘English culture’ and a real misunderstanding as to how diverse England is. I was born in London, grew up in London and went to school with people with such a rich heritage that’s just a laughable notion that we are all Morris dancers and that we don’t understand difference and can’t accept it. People just read too many Daily Mail articles and come up with these completely inaccurate prejudices.

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 19:17

‘Actually they played pretty well yesterday ’

We must have been watching a different match then…England barely touched the ball in the first 15 minutes, their passing was flat and poor, and did they even have 2 shots on target in the first half?

And yet Spain only beat them by one goal which came very late in the match. If England were that bad it should've been at least 3-1.

Anyway, I hope "Dave" is feeling better tomorrow #prayforDave

Not England, Britain. All parts of the union took part in the British Empire, slavery, Northern Ireland etc. Maybe stick to football...Oh yeah you don't know much about that either!

Funny how England gets the blame though...

We are genuinely very welcoming! Hence why English people are so diverse.

Believe it or not we don't spend a huge amount of time pondering life in England, Morris dancing or not. No idea how many here are DM readers. But there have been some strange attitudes on this thread and they do get your back up tbh.

Evidently not if the ideas of the English are so outdated!

I'm not sure what 'odd notions' of English people and English culture you got from my post tbh but as an English person who lives in Ireland I'm will to listen to your pov about the 'odd notions' that I seemingly have about myself.

Get back to yer Morris dancing will ya 😂

"there have been some strange attitudes on this thread and they do get your back up tbh."

Yes there have been and they do get your back up. But when it does get our backs up people use it as an excuse to accuse us of "expecting everyone to support England"
Maybe reflect on that 😆

Didn’t Irish women used to flee to England to avoid extreme misogynist treatment as recently as the 1980s? Sad

No, I won't thanks. I feel quite comfortable in my choices in who I support from game to game. And as I explained, it's the media that irritate me enough to stop me supporting England. Not the people, or the team or the manager.

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 20:10

" I was merely pointing out that England has been fucking up politically all over the world as recently as the 20th Century."

Do you mean Britain @Shaketherombooga? Scottish and Welsh people don't like it when people replace Britain with England 😉

And yes, Britain has a long and often brutal past. But you understand that there is a big world out there and only acknowledging the history of one country is pretty ignorant. Particularly considering it's regularly used to justify xenophobia. It's also very very silly attempting to apply it to people who hold no accountability.

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 20:11

‘I don't mind banter but some stuff has been proper hatred particularly from Scots.’

Oh poor little England, are the mean Scots not being nice?? Have you tried saying ‘Stop it, I don’t like it’?? 😂

It's on the list as soon as I finish reading the Daily Mail to learn about my culture.

The indignation is a fallacy though, seen as many people just don’t care as they have a diverse heritage with friends who are the same, it is ridiculous to make out they do care as much as you say they do. They are excited about getting through to the final of a major tournament as I am sure Irish fans would be if they did the same. I don’t think I’ve heard once anyone say in pubs when watching the football or friends barbecues watching the football, ‘is anyone really pissed off about the Irish winding us up about our quality of play or losing to the Spanish’; sorry but it doesn’t even feature on their radar. Maybe, in different circles or different parts of the country but I’m in the south east and it is not even mentioned.

The fact your thread is still standing with few deletions is testament to the English! If this was about Ireland/Scotland, it would’ve been zapped in seconds.

lolly792 · 15/07/2024 20:13

Decided on a nationality yet OP?

whereaw · 15/07/2024 20:13

It's a shame your home team aren't better and then this wouldn't be such a problem for you to contend with.
