To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

What past is that?

Their involvement with the slave trade, the appalling way in which they treated women by locking them away in institutions, and even recent events around misogyny and racism?

Goodness me you are affronted by everything as they play for England and the OP said they were neutral about the tournament- they quite evidently aren’t!

Goodness me, do you have to be affronted by everything I say? You can just ignore my inane ramblings you know.

Chill OP. We all know none of this is real!

Livelovebehappy · 15/07/2024 19:38

I honestly don’t think people care? My mum hates football - absolutely doesn’t care whether they win or lose. And she’s English. Lots of people don’t care about football. It really is no big deal. Do you think maybe it’s you who’s making it into this big issue, trying to provoke him into a reaction by going on and on about it? I think if I worked with someone, I wouldn’t be actively trying to piss them off over something as trivial as this. Were you bored? Not enough work to do?

I assume the slave trade involvement was tangled up with the English but feel free to educate me. As to the rest of our sins, they are indeed hideous, but it's pretty nasty to bring them up on a thread about football. Whatever makes you feel better though.

Not really minding who wins doesn’t mean you aren’t interested in the quality of the game or the football played… what a weird comment…

"I haven't, no. Because why should I trawl through the posts and quote them? I think I've made it very obvious what my thoughts are. You can accept them or take offence. Up to you."

@DanielGault

Daniel Daniel Daniel. you replied to my post. You replied to my post supposing something I hadn't said (I mean, not even close to anything I said).
Stop telling me you're disagreeing with me when you're not then 😄 and I'm not offended, like I said I was pointing out that you'd misrepresented my post.

You're definitely on the wind up.

I was responding not only to being directly asked but also to OP’s post about all her grievances with English history and why that’s related to her hatred of the football team Confused

"Ooh… Irish famine? Palestine? Division of India? Northern Ireland? Bengal Famine?
Boer War? British concentration camps in South Africa. British ships at the heart of the slave trade?
Mau Mau massacre?
I could go on or alternatively you could crack open a history book that doesn’t jump straight from Henry 8th to Queen Victoria to WW2"

Perhaps you should pick up a history book OP instead of just cherry picking historical events that highlight one countries sins. Countries across the world will have a history of slavery, wars, famine, tyranny, cruelty and abuse, savagery beyond most of our comprehension. History was extremely cruel and harsh for most (and many countries today continue to experience all of this). Acknowledging only one strand of history to justify your own prejudice is exceedingly ignorant, it's a big wide world out there.
Further, the people perpetuating the atrocities you listed were not representative of the general population, my ancestors were poor and oppressed themselves. My ancestors were not colonisers or slave owners..and even if they were evil and cruel, am I fuck being held accountable for someone else's actions. I mean it's absolutely ridiculous to use it as an excuse to hate people. At what point, which generation do you start to think "hmm this is a bit silly"?

But tbh I think it was clear from the start that you only started this thread as a means spout yet more xenophobia. There's no Dave and you typed it all out from your living room, right?
Football (and who you choose to support) is unimportant, having it used as yet another chance to demean you and your country is the issue. Just stop. And no more accusing "the English" of being anti Irish/Scottish/welsh/whatever.. it's been made clear that actually that's pure projection and complete hypocrisy of an accusation

@Shaketherombooga I noticed you didn't respond to this post, stop referring to our "colonial past" and attempting to accuse us of being colonisers.

HowIrresponsible · 15/07/2024 19:43

Your colleague asked if you're happy England lost because you're one of those who advertises this to any one who will listen.

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 12:09

Are you telling me that all those ex-pats from England living in Spain were cheering for Spain? Not sure I believe that.

Well, no, because it's quite possible for England fans living in Spain to openly support their native side while being respectful of the country they've chosen to call their home.

Your attitude is akin to those English fans choosing to live in Spain and loudly declaring that they'd rather anyone except Spain wins! There's a huge difference.

‘Actually they played pretty well yesterday ’

We must have been watching a different match then…England barely touched the ball in the first 15 minutes, their passing was flat and poor, and did they even have 2 shots on target in the first half?

So? The main purpose was to take the steam out of Spain. It worked. Another plastic football fan.

If any of this is actually true please carry on and gloat to losing fans and see how you fare.

It’s only a game!

..says the person who started a thread about hating the English football team and has spent literally the entire day posting on it, bringing up Northern Ireland, Palestine, a famine from hundreds of years ago and repeatedly whined about colonialism.

Buddysbunda · 15/07/2024 19:45

I think a lot of this is 'wind them up and watch them go'. I'm in Ireland and a lot of people were supporting Spain but its not actually that deep, if England would have played well and won there would have a general consensus of fair play to them.

I think more people find it funny that it seems to annoy a lot of English people very much when they support anyone but England and that's where the fun actually lies - watching the indignation. It's a bit of a sport in itself, mean maybe but relations between the UK and Ireland haven't exactly been stellar lately so I can't see it changing any time soon.

Ah. I’ll bet the post was an excuse to bring up the Palestine issue. The subject isn’t as active on MN as it used to be, and they’re trying to sneak in another pointless debate about it….

British not English. Going by all the massive houses and estates across the union they all profited from it.

Read the original post. He confronted me, and I barely spoke. Then HE went off on a rant, that another colleague told him to calm down a bit about.
I didn’t bring it up, He did. He went home because he was feeling unwell - thinking about it there’s a chance he was still drunk rather than hungover, because he’s not usually such a knobhead, although he is one of those blokes who enjoys a bit of ‘banter’ at others expense.
