To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

‘Actually they played pretty well yesterday ’

We must have been watching a different match then…England barely touched the ball in the first 15 minutes, their passing was flat and poor, and did they even have 2 shots on target in the first half?

Where are you from, what’s the country that was a ‘former colony’?

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 19:20

"I don't have personal prejudice ( not so bad at making stuff up yourself). I said I dislike the media bullshit around the English team"

That's not what you've said to me at all @DanielGault . And I have not referred to that once, I told you what I was referring to. More than once.
The "personal prejudice" remark wasn't made up, it's how you're coming across especially with your repeated refusal to acknowledge that you've misinterpreted posts and missed the point.

BMW6 · 15/07/2024 19:20

The OP is obviously Irish.

People like you are why certain political parties are expanding in popularity.

who’s that aimed at, me?? My lack of cheering on England cost them not only the final last night but is also responsible for Reform too??
Lack of imagination and courage, that’s what’s cost them the final.

The relevance would be what exactly? Not English means not English, not supporting the England football team means not supporting the England football team.
If you’re hoping to get me deported I can assure you that I am legally fine to be living in London!

No, my repeated refusal to agree with you. That's different.

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 19:24

Agree with what @DanielGault? You haven't mentioned anything that I have actually said to either agree or disagree.

I can’t believe you live in London when your outlook is so parochial, I find it hilarious that you think this would shock people if you live in London!

This. I actually think it's exactly this attitude among some who migrate here that pisses a lot of natives off.

I'm Welsh and generally support anyone-but-England. This isn't because I hate England - which I don't - but I think it's a pretty normal feature of sporting rivalry to not want a rival to do well.

Similarly, when Wales made the semi finals in Euro 2016, I found that quite a few England fans started rooting against us, because they knew that Welsh fans would have been insufferable if we won the Euros before England did!

I think the main reason a lot of England fans aren't as inclined to support anyone-but-Scotland/Wales is mainly because it's vanishingly rare for Scotland or Wales to look like they might be in with a shot of winning something, whereas England are often contenders.

Well that doesn't make sense as any team that plays against Wales is a rival surely ?

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 19:27

Harry Kane’s gone. Southgate too probably. You can keep doing the same thing over and over and expect a different outcome.

I haven't, no. Because why should I trawl through the posts and quote them? I think I've made it very obvious what my thoughts are. You can accept them or take offence. Up to you.

Harry was not at his best at all.

That the problem with your colonial past, left the door open for other people to come back to England legally… bit rich moaning about it now!

To be clear I like living where I live I’m just not a supporter of the England football team!
it is possible to live in a country while not thinking A) it’s perfect B) changing nationality C) Giving a damn about their national sports team/s!

But you said it went much further than that and is about the famine, Palestine and Northern Ireland?

Look, you’re being cowardly here. Stop making bold statements then attempting to row back on them, say your piece and stand by it.

Really demonstrating neutrality here aren’t you.

Why do they have to be 'neutral' over the performances of Kane and Southgate?

user1471453601 · 15/07/2024 19:30

I have neither the time nor, I'm afraid, the life expectancy to go through all the posts.

but I do have a view on the opening post. I'm born and bred English. I love football. Or, rather, I love the football club I support. I don't give a fuck about England. I have no ill will towards them , I just don't care.

I'm my view, the only reason to watch an England match is to see if any player from my club gets injured.

and, really a team that gets out of its group with one win and two draws is going to win? Well, I guess anything is possible. But Spain was by far the better team.

Jumpingthruhoops · 15/07/2024 19:31

Willoo · 15/07/2024 12:00

I’ve lived in England over twenty years. My husband and son are English. I still don’t and never will, support England. Everyone at work knows this and we get along great. We have a lot of banter about it. I’m not back in work until Tuesday and I can’t wait.

Not supporting England AND being vocal about supporting a rival national team - IN England - are two completely different things. You know that, right?

Gorgonemilezola · 15/07/2024 19:31

Support who you like, OP, but perhaps don't be a gobshite about it, eh.

Goodness me you are affronted by everything as they play for England and the OP said they were neutral about the tournament- they quite evidently aren’t!

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 19:34

"If you’re hoping to get me deported I can assure you that I am legally fine to be living in London!"

wtf are you talking about @Shaketherombooga 😆😆😆
I'm getting serious second hand embarrassment for you, you spent a good portion of the day posting on MN about an imaginary scenario. Invented to incite hateful comments..how much energy do you expel thinking about this shite and how miserable does it make you?
On the contrary, I have enjoyed the atmosphere of all the fans (regardless of nationality) and have felt really positive and happy despite not being a fan. All the England fans I spoke to today have been happy and positive about the achievements of their team. Sucks to be you ig 😉

"I frequently support their opposition" why? You sound assy. It's one thing to not care about football or to think Spain deserved to win because they played well. But seeing as you've asked yeah I'd say you sound annoying. Why did you choose to move here and live here so long if you feel this way?

100% this! 👏👏
