To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

I think I would support Scotland if they got through- but I totally understand them not supporting England. Not every street is or has to be two way.

Funny that they would support Spain. Conveniently forgetting Spain beat up Catalans and preventing independence..

Telling Dave that I wasn’t supporting England last night was hardly ‘bitching and moaning’ about England…
Little Britainers may hate when forinners live here, but nowt you can do about it. Must be annoying when people from countries you conquer follow you home and THEN have the gall not to support your football team 😂

Bullshit. Most English don't mind and we don't care about the English team being so diverse. It shows how welcoming we are.

Goldenbear · 15/07/2024 18:20

If you are referring to me I can bet my bottom dollar that my heritage my DH’s and my DCs is more divers than yours.

I didn't question how 'divers' your background was?

Caerulea · 15/07/2024 18:27

You're entirely not wrong about being under no obligations to support anyone other than your home country. Plenty of of ppl do, however, support the country they live in or are only a few generations into living here (anyone see that INCREDIBLE video from Edgebaston during the India vs Packistan cricket match? Literally the best thing I've seen in terms of wholesome crowd fun from this Euros) but at some point they feel British or English alongside their ancestral history - this is their home as much as mine or anyone elses & I bloody love this country for that. But they don't have to & neither do you, that's fine.

The guy behind me in the pub last night? Croatian. But he was as passionate about the match as I was.

The issue with you is you. You're not impartial in the least & are taking an unpleasant amount joy from others sadness & that's just not a nice characteristic. Being smug is near top of my list for gross behaviour, it's just horrible. Doesn't matter if you were English doing it about other countries either.

Anyone taking pleasure from others misery, sneering & mocking, isn't a good person imo. Gentle ribbing between the UK nations is fine, but in the past few years it's become something else & it's plain nasty.

Obvs none of the above applies to Ronaldo, I will revel in every tear shed.

I know plenty about football thanks. And I don't need your permission to say that. Idk why you're saying things about people not going near a football pitch, how could you possibly know that?

You have just stated categorically (as if anyone cares) that England played badly, they got to the final how could they have played badly, it is clear from that contradictory comment you don’t know much about football.

Are you lost @EllaVoday? Cbeebies is that way 👉

Did that sound witty in your wee head?

Another bad loser 😂😂

Scotland lost though?

It’s not like the other countries didn’t enter, they did and they got knocked out much sooner than England.

They then became utterly obsessed with our team and whether or not it won the final Confused if England are losers what does that make teams knocked out weeks ago?

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 15/07/2024 18:34

Of course OP is Irish and of course we don't want England to win anything ?

It's not xenophobia, it's not due to your colonising ways (which aren't in the past, get out of our county, thanks)

It's the unbelievable smugness, the little englander mentality, the fact that the women's team actually won last year yet the men's mediocrity is celebrated.

But most of all it's the It's coming Home song.

Again, it's that attitude. We don't owe you our support. Mind yourselves, and the rest of us will support who we like, with or without your approval. As for you always doing better, apparently the trophy cabinet tells a different story, so get down off your high horse.

It’s deliberately supporting our opponents that people oppose, not that you don’t actively support us.

DanielGault · 15/07/2024 18:35

But surely you can see from the thread how some people feel they're 'owed' support? That's exactly the kind of attitude that switches the rest of us off. I always started the matches supporting England but by roughly half time I switched because the commentators were so insufferable. It's not a dislike of English people, rather the OTT coverage of the football team.

They did play badly. That’s why the England supporters wanted Southgate sacked a few weeks ago. They were very, very lucky to get to the final with that quality of play. The luck mostly came from referee decisions going their way even when they were blatantly diving.

You say it is your country but quite a few in NI would disagree. Are you going to ignore that fact?

Caerulea · 15/07/2024 18:37

And for anyone that hasn't seen it - English ppl, men & women, girls & boys on tenterhooks & then feeling pure elation at the final successful penalty in the semis. Wanna bet OP wouldn't be smug & sneering in their faces like she was to Dave?

@DanielGault perhaps take the time to read the post you're replying to and explain where I said that it matters who supports who?
Your attitude absolutely stinks and you're so blinded by your own prejudice that you're seeing things that aren't there. HTH pet.

Davros · 15/07/2024 18:37

I remember supporting Scotland in the 1974 World Cup. England hadn't qualified so Scotland it was, despite being English with an Irish mother. You're riddled with prejudice OP

Actually they played pretty well yesterday hence why it took ages for Spain to score. I think they should be happy with that performance.

Littlebitpsycho · 15/07/2024 18:38

@Shaketherombooga I'm English through and through and actively hoped they wouldn't make it as far as they did.

I just can't be doing with all the 'footballs coming home' crap - no it isn't. And it won't until they're less shit. And even if they eventually become less shit I still won't care, and still won't want them to win.

I went to bed before 8pm last night with my takeaway kebab, put my phone on silent and banned anyone in the house from talking to me about the result because I. Just. Don't. Care.

So yeah your colleague is being unreasonable. I think you've been remarkably polite. I wouldn't have been!

Awaits the horrible comments (which I also won't care about)

They couldn’t have got the the final if they played that badly, it’s just nonsense that it is all luck and that they don’t have interesting young players, just rubbish, said by folk that is really just sour grapes.

oh and it was the diving/decisions and also the luck of the draw in not getting any bigger teams to play really until the semi final.

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 18:40

@EllaVoday that was meant to be more lighthearted than it sounded reading it back as opposed to trying to insulting. However I do think your comment was really unnecessary and childish.
