To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

In football terms, go nuts! You'll be here all night though.

No, I meant in response to ‘little Englander, colonialism’ blah blah - there is PLENTY we could say in return but can’t, as they would go sobbing to the mods as they can’t take it in reverse.

oh and it was the diving/decisions and also the luck of the draw in not getting any bigger teams to play really until the semi final.

So? You can only beat the teams in front of you. Do you watch much football?

lemonmeringueno3 · 15/07/2024 18:42

In my place of work, we have a Spanish national who obviously supported Spain. We also had lots of discussion about how Spain were the stronger team and deserved to win. So I think we were grown-up and subjective about it all.

But then there is just that one twat who bleats on about 'supporting the other team on principle' and came in laughing about it.

I think being known for anti-English sentiment, especially among co-workers who you presumably want to get along with, is not particularly big or clever. The football didn't colonise or subjugate anyone and neither did their fans. It particularly rankles if the person being loudly and aggressively anti-English has chosen to build a life in England because then it's as if they're whining on just to piss people off.

@Shaketherombooga I'm English through and through and actively hoped they wouldn't make it as far as they did.

I just can't be doing with all the 'footballs coming home' crap - no it isn't. And it won't until they're less shit. And even if they eventually become less shit I still won't care, and still won't want them to win.

I went to bed before 8pm last night with my takeaway kebab, put my phone on silent and banned anyone in the house from talking to me about the result because I. Just. Don't. Care.

So yeah your colleague is being unreasonable. I think you've been remarkably polite. I wouldn't have been!

Awaits the horrible comments (which I also won't care about)

So you are a self-confessed non football fan and yet you have the knowledge and insight to state they are ‘shit so this is not something you really know is it?

Fine to be a but miserable about it all of course - hope the kebab was nice.

They couldn’t have got the the final if they played that badly, it’s just nonsense that it is all luck and that they don’t have interesting young players, just rubbish, said by folk that is really just sour grapes.

How is it sour grapes when the actual England fans were wanting Southgate sacked? For a country of its size England should be romping it against Slovenia, Denmark and Switzerland, and they didn’t. They relied on a lot of decisions going their way.

Wow you're so rude. Of course you should support either your home country's team or the country you're living in. Otherwise it sounds like you hate us?!

It's not just sour grapes, it's a rational reaction to the OTT way the British media goes on about the team. Of course people laugh at it. It's cringe worthy. The general population doesn't seem to carry on like that, but I'm looking at the news, so getting a small sample.

Maybe give up the football talk and stick to something else. You obviously don't realise the quality of a couple of those teams.

Glitterybee · 15/07/2024 18:45

As an Irish person I will NEVER support England. I will cheer for whoever the opposition is everytime!!!

And on that note I was delighted for spain last night 🎉🎉🇪🇸🇪🇸

What is difficult to understand @DanielGault?

Although, reading your posts and seeing how you've completely missed the point of most posts and have convinced yourself that English posters think they are "owed" support, I'm not surprised you don't get the point.

Quite a few plastic football fans on here isn't there?. England are currently 5th in the world rankings.

I say anything was difficult to understand. I explained to you what irritated me

And 'disagrees with' is not the same as ' does not understand '.

No, the football didn’t colonise or subjugate anyone, but a lot of the fans still demonstrate the same triumphalism that went with it - as do the media. The fans also tend to cause trouble and behave rather obnoxiously wherever they go. It’s bad enough when they're not even playing great and just scraping by, so it would be quite unbearable if they did win something (as 1966 has proved).

Ain't that the truth!

Idontpostmuch · 15/07/2024 18:49

@Shaketherombooga Haha are you by any chance scottish? Supporting the opposition's a national sport, Having said that, England have done brilliantly.

Angeljayne · 15/07/2024 18:50

Fecking hell it's like kids bickering in a playground. My mum is better than your mum. Grow up.

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 18:51

You didn't disagree with anything I actually said though @DanielGault and you didn't explain anything either. You proposed that I thought people should support a football team. I didn't say anything like that. The actual point of my post went over your head.

My friend is Spanish, living in London and believe me the Spanish press were just as vocal about it- it was the final of course they are. England’s fate throughout the tournament is always going to be well covered in the press as it has a huge population compared to Scotland and Wales and many clubs that are playing at championship level compared to Scotland and Wales. It is not exactly a surprise!

Notreat · 15/07/2024 18:52

I'm English and I don't support them. It's not compulsory though it does sometimes seem to be. Apparently a You Gov poll showed about 50% of people in England didn't care who won. I think the media hype up the interest.

OneTC · 15/07/2024 18:52

C) Giving a damn about their national sports team/s!

But you do though, you seem to care a lot

WithACatLikeTread · 15/07/2024 18:54

Curious why you are not keen to say the nationality?

GreyBlackLove · 15/07/2024 18:54

I'm not from England, but am from the UK and did hope they'd win.

Can understand the frustration with English media coverage, but I don't think you can really blame the team or fans for that since it's a regular thing regardless of the sport...and Three Lions On The Shirt is undeniably a catchy tune 😂

It's not the fact that they cover it. It's the fact that they blow everything up out of all proportion. Not the team or the manager, but the press is woeful for it. Every single time.
