To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

I choose to live in England as an Irish person but don't support the men's teams as it is often jingoistic and crowing. Their supporters seem to hate and patronise all other countries teams. However there is joy and celebration in the much more successful women's football team. I'm pleased for them. Long may it stay sportingly positive like this.

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 18:06

To be clear I like living where I live I’m just not a supporter of the England football team!
it is possible to live in a country while not thinking A) it’s perfect B) changing nationality C) Giving a damn about their national sports team/s!

Totally agree with this… there were England supported dressed up as WW2 pilots at some of the games, FFS…

Why, out of interest? Immigrants should put up and shut up is it?

Little Britainers may hate when forinners live here, but nowt you can do about it. Must be annoying when people from countries you conquer follow you home and THEN have the gall not to support your football team 😂

I think I would support Scotland if they got through- but I totally understand them not supporting England. Not every street is or has to be two way.

Yet more anti-English rhetoric on Mumsnet I see. I just knew that sooner or later one of these threads would pop up. This isn’t about football, it’s just another opportunity to have a dig, complete with sweeping generalisations about English people. You clearly have a chip on your shoulder about England and English people OP. If you hate it so much then why don’t you just hop over the border and go and live in Scotland?

Edited

This.
I'm no football fan myself but I don't begrudge fans being happy and excited. In fact I think it's nice and I love seeing them singing and decorating with flags. I also don't like how them being hopeful and singing songs is always skewed by anglophobes into them being arrogant. Fans of the other nations don't seem to come under the same scrutiny despite seemingly behaving the same way (we are obviously exposed to our own fans and media more because we're in the same country as them).
What I find tiresome is the way it's inevitably used by anti English people and they seem to be a lot more vocally (and frequently) negative and toxic than anything I've seen coming from England fans tbh.

lolly792 · 15/07/2024 18:14

Funny how the OP addresses the entire thread as if they're British - 'you Little Britainers.' I'm not. I'm not so childishly anti-Brits either.

I’m not from England but lived here for many, many years and could never support England and often support the opposition as well. My children get quite upset that I don’t support them as do most other people. I didnt choose to live here for the rest of my life and are stuck here now I fully support my home county still.

if your children are quite young have you tried explaining why you don’t support the country (presumably) of their birth?

it seems a bit mean not to support England even if just to support your Dc. What’s the worst that could happen?

Perhaps take the time to peruse the previous comments which explains in detail why people might not support England. HTH.

Support who you like - normal people don’t care!

This ^^ 🙄

The dramatic CAPITAL LETTERS in the thread title and 3 question marks???

Did make me laugh though.

I am Irish, but that doesn't negate my point. England have had very little actual success, despite a very prominent league. And England should do well compared to the other UK countries by sheer dint of its size. But they have been poor. I don't count this team in those terms, they just came up against a better team in Spain. But there seems to be quite a few people knocking around that believe you're 'owed' a trophy for some reason. That gets my goat tbh.

The got the final or is that all down to luck, you clearly know naff all about football, what gets my goat more is people who clearly have limited football knowledge declaring categorically that England played badly throughout the tournament and the hilarious observations of the youthful male team as being ‘beige’ again what does that even mean. Frankly, it is embarrassing to hear people state such nonsense when they don’t go near a football pitch.

Are you telling me that all those ex-pats from England living in Spain were cheering for Spain? Not sure I believe that.
Maybe not against England but against another country, yeah, I reckon they'd support Spain

I promise you, no one cares who you support. I’m sorry you’re not getting the reaction you were hoping for on this thread - you’re now desperately turning to laughing emojis. And stop pretending Dave is real, we all know he isn’t.

Despite that they are ranked extremely highly in the world rankings. In the top five. That isn't a fluke

The OP probably thinks they're the only person to start this tiresome thread that comes up every 2 years, what with the Euros and the world cup.

I know plenty about football thanks. And I don't need your permission to say that. Idk why you're saying things about people not going near a football pitch, how could you possibly know that?
