To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

I was born in Malaysia but I would support England in a football match. This is my country now and I'm proud to be British. I don't understand your attitude OP, it literally stinks!

Yes, it is so unnecessarily divisive. Maybe it’s different as DH and I grew up in London ms have diverse heritage are kids don’t have an English surname but I don’t understand all the lines that are drawn in such a hateful way.

Well you crack on, I’m not English and don’t consider myself to be. If you want to change nationality then that’s entirely your choice.
I’ll keep mine as is.

I am English, but live in Wales. I get really fed up of some Welsh people supporting the team England are playing - I have even seen Azerbaijani flags being flown.
I will always support a home nation team unless they are playing England.
I think it dangerous generalising about all English do this, or all Welsh do that. We are all individuals

Itsjustnotcricket11 · 15/07/2024 17:47

I’m not from England but lived here for many, many years and could never support England and often support the opposition as well. My children get quite upset that I don’t support them as do most other people. I didnt choose to live here for the rest of my life and are stuck here now I fully support my home county still.

LadyGrinningSoul8517 · 15/07/2024 17:49

I'm English, and couldn't give a naff about football.
However, I do find your behaviour and insistence on supporting the opposing team just because they aren't England very immature.

It's like a petulant child stamping their feet screaming "IF WE CAN'T HAVE IT, THEY CAN'T!"

Try growing up a little, maybe?

One day your home team may get there, but it's not anyone else's fault that we always do better.
Stop wasting your energy on such pettiness.

Goldenbear · 15/07/2024 17:54

You didn’t reply to Welsh so I assume you’re Welsh? Is you former colony actually in Europe?

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 17:54

"Ooh… Irish famine? Palestine? Division of India? Northern Ireland? Bengal Famine?
Boer War? British concentration camps in South Africa. British ships at the heart of the slave trade?
Mau Mau massacre?
I could go on or alternatively you could crack open a history book that doesn’t jump straight from Henry 8th to Queen Victoria to WW2"

Perhaps you should pick up a history book OP instead of just cherry picking historical events that highlight one countries sins. Countries across the world will have a history of slavery, wars, famine, tyranny, cruelty and abuse, savagery beyond most of our comprehension. History was extremely cruel and harsh for most (and many countries today continue to experience all of this). Acknowledging only one strand of history to justify your own prejudice is exceedingly ignorant, it's a big wide world out there.
Further, the people perpetuating the atrocities you listed were not representative of the general population, my ancestors were poor and oppressed themselves. My ancestors were not colonisers or slave owners..and even if they were evil and cruel, am I fuck being held accountable for someone else's actions. I mean it's absolutely ridiculous to use it as an excuse to hate people. At what point, which generation do you start to think "hmm this is a bit silly"?

But tbh I think it was clear from the start that you only started this thread as a means spout yet more xenophobia. There's no Dave and you typed it all out from your living room, right?
Football (and who you choose to support) is unimportant, having it used as yet another chance to demean you and your country is the issue. Just stop. And no more accusing "the English" of being anti Irish/Scottish/welsh/whatever.. it's been made clear that actually that's pure projection and complete hypocrisy of an accusation

I can't stand the England football team for various reasons.

Was happy to cheer for the Lionesses.

Again, it's that attitude. We don't owe you our support. Mind yourselves, and the rest of us will support who we like, with or without your approval. As for you always doing better, apparently the trophy cabinet tells a different story, so get down off your high horse.

Why do you have to change your nationality to live somewhere? I have British friends who are settled in Spain, France, New Zealand and the US. Don't think any of them have changed their nationality or consider themselves to be Spanish, American etc.

Doesn't mean they aren't fully integrated and enjoying where they live.

Is that we they are saying, the reality is in football England does fair well in comparison to the rest of the UK, if you are Irish this wouldn’t be a post aimed at you would it!

I think the oP sounds like a ten year old as they won’t reveal their ‘former colony’ why not?

Do you think the only people living in England should be English? The NHS would lose half its work force over night for starters!
What a bizarre question.

I am Irish, but that doesn't negate my point. England have had very little actual success, despite a very prominent league. And England should do well compared to the other UK countries by sheer dint of its size. But they have been poor. I don't count this team in those terms, they just came up against a better team in Spain. But there seems to be quite a few people knocking around that believe you're 'owed' a trophy for some reason. That gets my goat tbh.
