To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

Precisely. Good Morning Britain is especially guilty of this. England team is referred to 'us' and 'we'. And 'making the nation proud'. I thought the nation was the UK.

It’s all like that, unfortunately.

I feel proud of team GB in the Olympics and other athletic events and I was proud of Murray winning Wimbledon.

However, I take on board the oft cited criticism of British broadcasting treating the UK as though it's England. It must be very annoying.

JustAVeryWeirdWoman · 15/07/2024 15:37

I get why the OP is annoyed, I find the UK media and general vibe to be insufferable whenever there's footie on.

I'm not English either and my native country was not in the final, so I approached it impartially: I like football and I support the team that plays the best, most entertaining game.

This means I can't support England. Nothing against it in principle. England invented the sport and popularised it, all credit due. It would be nice if they were good at playing it. The reality is that even when England won the World Cup in the 60s it was by cheating (massive help from the referee). This year England had the easiest draw of all the big teams and still struggled mightily in some extremely dull games, Kane moves like a grandpa etc.

I'm sorry, guys. I'll support you when you actually learn to play. I get the local emotional attachment, but t's unfair to expect a bunch of immigrants to support such an unexciting team.

Also in Wales. And to be clear I couldn’t care less about football, whether Wales are playing or not. But you see it loads in rugby too and it’s so annoying - you would think no one else in the UK played any kind of sport outside of England. I get the whole 68m v 3m people argument, but it is so disproportionate.

You sound full of self importance. You're sorry? No one cares that you don't support them. It's a bigger thing in your head than to sane person, I assure you.

We're on a thread about English people who feel offended that non-English people don't support England in footie! If you don't care, then this isn't about you, so move along, dear.

Can you quote where somebody has said that please?

Ah, the true purpose of your thread revealed 😉

MartinsSpareCalculator · 15/07/2024 15:53

Support whoever you like, it's just a game!

I'm English. I don't support England because my dad isn't English and I was brought up following his team. I've had people question it occasionally but think they're the odd ones, not me!

Criteria16 · 15/07/2024 15:53

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 14:50

The over expectation, the frequent mediocre performances, the ENDLESS media coverage and the fact that they gloat when they win and sulk when they lose… oh, and the fact that they seem to expect other nations to support their team for some reason 😂

Thanks! Unfortunately your points either don't make sense to me or I don't hang out with the right crowd as I still don't get it!

  • over expectation - wouldn't every team participate with an expectation to win? Clearly some teams are better than others and they know, but do they tell their supporters 'we are shit but we will give it a go?'. I wouldn't certainly appreciate that attitude as a supporter...
  • frequent mediocre performances - what reason on earth is this one? I mean, I would agree if they were playing against the rules or incite violence or something like this....but actively wish a lost because they don't play well is ....weird?
  • endless media coverage - I am from another country, I read the news of 4 different countries every day, trust me this is not unique to England...
  • gloat when they win/sulk when they lose - can you bring an example of a team that doesn't do that?

I feel they are very irrational reasons to be honest.... There must be something else, surely?

Agree completely with this. England supporters have the worst reputation in the world. As for the newspaper headlines ,"you've done us proud" no they really haven't they only got through by the skin of their teeth.
I also hate that domestic violence increases when they lose.

EllenLRipley · 15/07/2024 15:59

People who don't support England seem to think it places them on a higher moral ground when it just makes you look like a fun sponge. Why not just say "I'm sorry they lost Dave, I'd have loved an extra bank holiday too" and leave it? The performance of hating England is so boringly predictable at this point.

Extra bank holiday, you on glue??? I would like an extra day actually, and I would fully support St George’s Day being at holiday…
you clearly missed the bit where he started on me, I said I was a neutral.
and no, I’m not sure they didn’t win. They were shite. And Spain were great.

England failed again.

I don't hate the England team. In fact they're much more likeable than in decades past. I'm old enough to remember Jimmy Hill and his anti Scottish remarks.
DH is a Celtic supporter. He would never support Rangers in any context.
