To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

Support who you like - normal people don’t care!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/07/2024 11:51

Sounds like your colleague is just a bit odd! Normal people wouldn’t have an issue I don’t think, esp as you aren’t English.

Leftphalange100 · 15/07/2024 11:51

To be honest if I'd made a home in a country that I was happy and settled in, I'd support them. But that is up to you at the end of the day, its your choice. Different if they were playing against my home country but if not my home country I'd support them also as the country I live in.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 15/07/2024 11:51

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’

Why did he say that? Does he know you don't support them, or was he making an assumption based on where he knows you're from (or where he has guessed you're from)?

He sounds like he was looking for an argument. Most people wouldn't care.

No need to be so rude! You asked for opinions on a forum and are being rude because I don't agree with you. Also, I'm scottish!

araiwa · 15/07/2024 11:55

Big difference between not supporting the country you moved to and supporting the opposition to the country you live in

I'm not English but live there and I'm in agreement with the poster you've delightfully told to "feck off". Unless you've got more a connection with Spain it seems pretty reasonable, if you do support a side in the match, to support the country you've chosen to make your long term home.

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:57

He’s now followed up with some blathering about this is why they lose because people like me don’t believe in them etc. 😅
I had no idea I held such power, to influence a national football team to play so badly…

I genuinely think he might have to go home early, the hangover has clearly sent the poor guy loopy…

Spoken to all English people have you or are you going by generalisations? Many people would support the home nations if they got into a final. I imagine your colleague is a bit down and hungover. I would change the subject and get on with your day.

Longma · 15/07/2024 11:59

I frequently support their opposition!

Why do you frequently support the opposition?
It is because 'it's not England' or because you have an affinity with the other team?

I suspect the answer could be in that partially, or how others perceive the way you support different oppositions.

DappledThings · 15/07/2024 11:59

I'm English and live in England and I don't support them. I don't not support them either, I'm by no means happy they lost but consensus seems to be Spain played better so fair enough they won.

OP's neutral response was entirely reasonable

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 12:00

He is RANCIDLY hungover to be fair. It’s a wonder he made it in. We are allowed duvet days here.

I’ve lived in England over twenty years. My husband and son are English. I still don’t and never will, support England. Everyone at work knows this and we get along great. We have a lot of banter about it. I’m not back in work until Tuesday and I can’t wait.

If he's a work colleague, I'd threated him with HR or a word with your manager. It's inappropriate behaviour, bordering on harassment.

Bex5490 · 15/07/2024 12:02

You can support whoever you like! My family are from London but support Liverpool.

It’s just that those of us who do support England are a little hungover, sensitive and sad from last night’s events…your colleague will get over it!

You ok? You seem quite angry.

OneTC · 15/07/2024 12:02

I'm not English, but if they're playing any other team then I support England. Most of my non English friends don't though. I find the "come on the other team" mentality to be a bit 6th form edge-lord and petty.

If I was visiting France and they were playing some other random country then I'd cheer on France.

If you’re looking for a Spanish shirt to wear I think the Scots already got them all, sorry!

By tomorrow some may have regained a sense of perspective and humor about it. Good luck!

I think this is a little extreme - how is it harassment?
