To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

Are you telling me that all those ex-pats from England living in Spain were cheering for Spain? Not sure I believe that.

Exactly. I hate football anyway so couldn’t care less who won or lost but there is a mix of Scots, English and Welsh in our English based team and there was a bit of banter at 9am this morning which was over and done with by 9.05 with nobody falling out

Its the chip on the shoulder people (from any country) that gives football, specifically the male teams, the reputation that it has

SummerHouse · 15/07/2024 12:14

Some people are really upset by it and I would show them some kindness. No matter what team or where they are from.

I had to go to bed when France lost. I just couldn't bear to see their disappointment. I have zero affiliation with France.

I was delighted to see McIntyre win the Scottish golf open just in time to catch kick off! Delighted for him and all the Scottish fans. A brilliant long putt to finish.

Maybe a little empathy op? But sure, your colleague does sound a bit antagonist today.

sanogo · 15/07/2024 12:15

I think you should support the country that you were born in

x2boys · 15/07/2024 12:16

cupcaske123 · 15/07/2024 12:09

Wha? I lived in another country for a long time and didn't support them in sport.

You dont.have to support them ts the obnoxious anyone but England attitude that is tiring

TheThingIsYeah · 15/07/2024 12:11

You don't actually follow the game do you?

Brazil don't play like the sides of 1970 anymore. Far more cynical and dirty these days.

Mate, I both play football and coach football. And I’d put my house on Brazil showing up any day of the week and playing more creative, interesting football than this current national English men’s team.
They weren’t very good. Spain were much, much better. There’s no a commentator in the world who watched that game and thought England should have won.

Are you a british citizen?

If you plan to live/stay here indefinitely it seems a bit odd to almost deliberately support opposition when england play. Fine to be completely neutral or perhaps support your birth country etc.

AzureAnt · 15/07/2024 12:19

You are allowed to support or not support anyone you like.
Just don't slag off England or the English supporters.
That will get their backs up

Me too. And I do.

I could be wrong but this absolutely stinks of Scottish/Irish/Welsh supporting the other team just because it's 'not England'.

There's a lot of that attitude on social media - with them apparently just hating all English people for no reason, or because we were 'the oppressors' in the past.

I've had one in the office this morning - took great pleasure in telling him that, whilst I'm English, all my grandparents are actually IrishGrin

If you're one of the above groups OP, the guy in your office is probably just sick of this rhetoric on social media. It is absolutely pathetic sour grapes. Although he does sound obnoxious, I'll give you that

pointlessopportunity · 15/07/2024 12:21

Do you support Ireland

😂😂😂

You don’t need to support England but it’s always worth being considerate of other people’s feelings.

You’re coming across as rude and deliberately provocative.

I’m confused as in your opening post you asked if you were not being unreasonable for not supporting England as the country you come from was a former colony of England but I thought Britain were the colonialists not England? Why won’t you say which country ‘England’ colonised that you are from?

Skinglow · 15/07/2024 12:22

‘I could be wrong but this absolutely stinks of Scottish/Irish/Welsh supporting the other team just because it's 'not England'. ’

Indeed, but given the history of England and Ireland/Scotland in particular do you blame them!??

Dave sounds like a pillock ..:.I hate blokes who mope at work because of football results. We have one at our place

It was fun getting to the final and watching it in the pub

Bad luck...never mind. Life goes on

It's obvious to everyone Spain were by far the better players, but England were not thrashed by them they did well to get a 2:1 finish
But why be obnoxious about it?

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 12:05

‘I'm not English, but if they're playing any other team then I support England.’

That is big of you. Bit random though. I’d probably choose a team that won more TBH… Brazil, Germany maybe?
I mean if you are going to support a national team that’s not yours, make it a good one!

The league club I support isn't even in the premiership, it's not about glory hunting they're the team that's local to where I made my home in London.

I support England because I live here and it's pretty good to me and it just feels kinda polite and community minded. I wouldn't support them against my home team.

I don't really care what other people do, like I said most of my friends feel differently and light-heartedly give me grief for being too English

andthat · 15/07/2024 12:26

@Shaketherombooga YABU for thinking you ‘should’ do anything.

Support who you like for any reason you like!

Why do you start an AIBU and then tell people to fuck off because they disagree with you?

TBH I’m most happy about not having to hear the phrase ‘it’s coming home’ for a while!!
