To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

I think this is what it comes down to. I'm not English but would support them unless they were playing my home country.
If you are supporting 'anyone but England' whilst living here I can see why it would piss people off although I suspect most people wouldn't care.

I agree. I’m not English and not even particularly interested in football, but I supported England yesterday as they weren’t playing against my home country anyway.
’Anyone but England’ whilst living in England sounds a bit childish to me 🤷‍♀️

Rainbowsponge · 15/07/2024 12:41

People are absolutely obsessed with the English aren’t they! We seem to absolutely fascinate them. All hate is misguided love apparently - maybe it’s jealousy?

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 12:41

Rainbowsponge · 15/07/2024 12:39

Not caring is fine but actively supporting whoever the opposition is? Why do you live here if you dislike the country?

I don’t. Obviously. I just don’t support England sports teams.

OP, I’m guessing you’re Aussie? I wasn’t born in England but I live here permanently and definitely support them in sport be up this feels like my country now. I know others who live in England but would never support them in sport and it seems a shame that they live here but aren’t fully supportive of English teams. But ultimately it isn’t a big deal. It just says something about how you feel about the country that you live in.

Because of a famine in distant history? Yeah that makes sense LOL

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 12:09

Are you telling me that all those ex-pats from England living in Spain were cheering for Spain? Not sure I believe that.

But they're English so that doesn't make sense. If it was Spain v France I'm sure they would be supporting Spain.

You sound very bitter and angry about this. Maybe you should go home too.

MoonlightFarrow · 15/07/2024 12:43

I’m a football fan and support England but I think Spain deserved to win, both on the night and over the tournament. I’d obviously have preferred England to win, but I’m not so ridiculously partisan that I “take it hard” when they lose or can’t give a balanced view of a game. Your colleague is very weird, but not uncommon sadly.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 15/07/2024 12:44

England can't be that bad seeing as you chose to live here

Rainbowsponge · 15/07/2024 12:44

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 12:38

Ooh… Irish famine? Palestine? Division of India? Northern Ireland? Bengal Famine?
Boer War? British concentration camps in South Africa. British ships at the heart of the slave trade?
Mau Mau massacre?
I could go on or alternatively you could crack open a history book that doesn’t jump straight from Henry 8th to Queen Victoria to WW2.

So surely moving away and paying taxes that DONT support the ‘regime’ above would be more logical than hoping their football team loses? Confused

Why won’t you say which ‘former colony’ you are from, is it because you are Scottish and not Irish as you want others to believe?

Ploughlifht · 15/07/2024 12:46

It’s probably the endless ‘anyone but England’ attitude. We get it, you hate England (yet choose to live here).
I also doubt this happened, it was just an excuse for yet another thread from an anti English poster ✌️

NooNakedJacuzziness · 15/07/2024 12:46

If I was Dave I'd put your stapler in jelly

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 12:47

Well he started it. It did pick one of the 2 none English people in today and start on me… presumably the Scot is too big to pick a fight with … it’s not harassment… if he’s stupid enough to think they didn’t win because of something anyone did other than the team and coaches and players then so be it.

So you’re not Scottish, is Australia a former colony of England or Britain?

That’s true though - a lot of us do support the other home nations.

It’s not what I observed when Wales progressed further than England, to be honest.
I have zero interest in football so I don’t support any team. I was slightly dreading an England win for the inevitable going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about it on the tv and social media for the next zillion years though. I didn’t actively wish them to lose because I don’t have enough interest in it to do that, but England fans and the media do the team no favours.

I'm kind of seeing a number of Reform voters on this thread, if not worse. ENGERLAND FOOTBAWW - love it or leave it! etc etc.

Ooh, retro. A stapler. I’ve heard of those, big in the 80s weren’t they?

Can I just clarify that I DID NOT mention the football ⚽️ Dave did. I didn’t rock up in a Spain shirt shouting ‘Ole!’

I think it’s more ‘I don’t support the football because famine/Gaza’ etc.

It makes as much sense as putting a stapler in a jelly

philosoppee · 15/07/2024 12:08

Can't stand your attitude. No idea why you would actively not support the country you're living in. No wonder people find your attitude annoying.

I don’t actively support any football teams. It’s not compulsory. Sounds a bit like the Tebbit test, which is a bit unpleasant.

I’m not I’m seeing the usual on MN these days, divisive wind up merchants that appear to be quite miserable and before you respond I have Scandinavian heritage so no truck here!

Samthedog71717 · 15/07/2024 12:52

My friend is half Spanish half Greek Cypriot, born in Ireland, raised in Scotland and lived most of her adult life in England. She is all for Spain, its just a game a little bit of healthy competition. Whoever said that is odd.

retinolalcohol · 15/07/2024 12:54

The 'anyone but England', based on distant history, attitude is just so divisive and unnecessary IMO.

I couldn't give a shiny shite that England lost last night - couldn't be less interested in football (more of a rugby girl). Did not even watch it.

But social media is grinding my gears today, purely because I get sick to the back teeth of being 'hated' for something I was never guilty of. Eg. Irish colleague today coming at me just because of how my voice sounds.

I expect a lot of English people feel similar, and that's why they get their backs up!
