Kid's being allowed to go to school late in the morning

Local schools to me are allowing children to go in at 10am tomorrow.

What do we all think about this? I'm on the fence, schools are shouting about absence/lateness/taking them out for holidays but on the other hand the kids may not see this again for a long time. My sisters kids are upset because both parents can't start work late so they have to go to school at usual time, it's unfair to put parents on the spot with this as well.

YABU - It's fine for schools to do this.
YANBU - I don't agree with it.

Loads of kids stay up until those times anyway, so why the need to start school later. If they're tired, they go to bed earlier on Monday night. So I don't think that's the real reason.

The truth is, a bunch of parents will be incapable of being responsible and not drinking themselves into a stupor despite knowing they have to get up early to get kids to school. So schools are recognising they have a bunch of irresponsible parents who will be too hung over to be a proper parent and get their kids to school on time, so are letting them come in later.

Let's call a spade a spade, it's to help the hangovers not the tired children.

I think you'll find that the game appeals to younger children, who would not be up normally?

Honestly, don't think many parents will be drinking themselves into a stupor and not attending work themselves

You're not keen on footie fans are you?

And a lot of non football fans will have a massive interest today, as will their young children.

It’s a bit sad schools are having to think of this. I think it’s more about the parents than the kids really. Lots of kids can struggle through with the odd late night, or they will watch some of the game and fall asleep or get too tired to stay up. If parents have to get kids to school the next day you would hope they would t be out late getting drunk but would watch the game at home or not drink.

The people saying we’ve already won because the women have done it before is tiresome. This game is nothing to do with the women’s game, it’s completely different. If a British woman was to win the Wimbledon final I wouldn’t expect everyone to be bleating ‘what’s the big deal, Andy Murray already won’. It’s different.

notacooldad · 14/07/2024 20:32

For many children it will be the last week of school.
SATS are done and it's wind down week.

Many schools are allowing about an hour leeway.

It's hardly a big deal to get wound up about.
I say this, and I'm not a football fan. Dh and sons have gone to the pub. I'm happy at home!

It did, it happened at our aschool the last time they were in the finals

For those saying "it's just a game" and "kids should still come in on time if they're tired", schools are fully aware of this but some of them have made a purely pragmatic decision based on the following:

A small (but growing) minority of parents simply cannot be arsed to take their kids to school and will use any excuse to keep them off. Schools would rather they came in late than give them another excuse to have yet another unnecessary day off.

Kids having a lie in and coming in late is preferable to kids falling asleep at their desks.

Kids having a lie in and coming in late is preferable to them being disengaged, disruptive, falling out with friends or having meltdowns because they're so tired.

Some kids coming in at normal time and the rest coming in at 10 is easier to manage for the office staff and less disruptive for teachers than loads of kids being late anyway and coming into school in dribs and drabs.

Football does not cause Domestic Abuse but there is evidence that existing abuse becomes more frequent and severe during big tournaments so again, schools would rather have kids living in volatile situations in late than not at all.

Sadly, some of our parents do this regularly irrespective of football. Not many, but too many.

If you don't like it, just don't watch it and send your kids in at the normal time.

@Julyshouldbesunny

Women won 2 years ago, can't see why this is being made a bigger deal! Also why on earth is the game on so late, started at 9pm in Germany! If they had started at 6pm certain ( 5pm bst) it would have been better for all including the people whose buses stop at 9.30pm , here!

If you can't understand why mems football is a bigger thing than women's football you must live in an alternative world

I do agree that it could have started earlier

Stop being childish. Someone who doesn’t like football isn’t necessarily a “misery guts”. Grow up.

Oh, the irony 😂

SummerDays2020 · 14/07/2024 20:39

I'm in trouble for attendance so this does make me roll my eyes a bit. My DD's school is always having early finishes, they went in late after open evening, they miss lessons to go to mass or some other event. So no, I'm not going to worry that my DD has missed school for genuine reasons.

They're not bending to it; they're constantly working within the constraints of it trying to minimise the effects on kids who deserve better.

Attendance stats are just data and information. But regular school attendance for kids with what you call shit parents means better life chances.

Theunamedcat · 14/07/2024 20:39

We have had a message just now saying if you keep your child up late get them in before 10am and they won't get a late mark they won't be able to join in x year sports day however that is still going ahead at nine thirty 😂 but the school will be open as normal and if we win feel free to wear an England tshirt or red/white accessories

Seems to acknowledge it's the parents choice to keep them up

Heelworkhero · 14/07/2024 20:40

@Julyshouldbesunny don’t be silly! It’s a game of football!

Would they need any excuse to keep them off, it they're shit parents?

Women football is less popular and presumably less children went bed very late.

The women’s final was on 31st July, in the school holidays.

This history was ALREADY MADE by the Lionesses in 2022

Did they get time off school then?

MoonlightFarrow · 14/07/2024 20:43

I think it’s a nice, pragmatic gesture. It’s not mandatory, so if parents need them in at the normal time, they can take them in.
