Kid's being allowed to go to school late in the morning

Local schools to me are allowing children to go in at 10am tomorrow.

What do we all think about this? I'm on the fence, schools are shouting about absence/lateness/taking them out for holidays but on the other hand the kids may not see this again for a long time. My sisters kids are upset because both parents can't start work late so they have to go to school at usual time, it's unfair to put parents on the spot with this as well.

YABU - It's fine for schools to do this.
YANBU - I don't agree with it.

Ffs schools will still be open at usual time, staff will still be in. Kids can be dropped off at normal time or not, as you wish, where the school has offered this. What more do you want?!?!

PregnantWithHorrors · 14/07/2024 20:12

It's a pragmatic decision. A recognition that everyone coming in as usual on time isn't one of the options available.

Cityandmakeup · 14/07/2024 20:12

Another teacher bash. Boring

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 14/07/2024 20:14

Loads of kids stay up until those times anyway, so why the need to start school later. If they're tired, they go to bed earlier on Monday night. So I don't think that's the real reason.

The truth is, a bunch of parents will be incapable of being responsible and not drinking themselves into a stupor despite knowing they have to get up early to get kids to school. So schools are recognising they have a bunch of irresponsible parents who will be too hung over to be a proper parent and get their kids to school on time, so are letting them come in later.

Let's call a spade a spade, it's to help the hangovers not the tired children.

So numerous hospital wards, surgeries, fire stations, schools, banks, etc will be under staffed / unable to function until after 10
because suddenly millions of parents have childcare responsibilities.

How many of the schools are saying the late start is compulsory?

Every one I've seen has simply said that the register doesn't close until the later time, but school is open as normal from the normal times. It simply means a child arriving a bit later won't get a key mark.

I think the schools are trying to make a nice gesture for children and parents.

Why are some parents so upset by being given a bit of flexibility in the last week of term?

It’s nothing to do with schools supporting the football and all about them trying to encourage people who have a late night not to just give the kids the day off tomorrow.

For the sake of their stats, which Ofsted can cane them for, they’d rather have 50 kids come in a bit late than 30-odd just having the whole day off.

Yes, and at our school I think they suspect lots of parents would send the kids in late anyway. By offering an “official” optional later start time, they only have to deal with two arrivals/registration periods, rather than kids drifting in all morning which would be much more disruptive.

TrixieFatell · 14/07/2024 20:19

It's over the top. We have had a number of top sporting occasions not being marked like this.

And once in a lifetime, weren't they in a final not too long ago?

Madness. It’s just a fucking game.

@Julyshouldbesunny

Women won 2 years ago, can't see why this is being made a bigger deal! Also why on earth is the game on so late, started at 9pm in Germany! If they had started at 6pm certain ( 5pm bst) it would have been better for all including the people whose buses stop at 9.30pm , here!

ThursdayTomorrow · 14/07/2024 20:20

The teachers will be in as usual. They know full well that some kids will be kept up late to watch the football and as a result will be over tired the next day. Giving them a chance to sleep in will help them get through Monday on an even keel.

You can still take your child at the normal time

Women football is less popular and presumably less children went bed very late.

Hardly!

It's the final of a big competition, of a national game.

Why are some posters pretending they don’t know that men’s football is much more popular than women’s

Schools still open, staff still there. Kids who's family have not got drunk the night before and are still up on time can go in normal time. Better a bit late than not arriving at all.

Good point actually, lots of parents will be drinking so it’s safer to have kids get driven in a couple of hours later than risk them being driven by parents still over the limit. Obviously parents should be responsible enough to make sure they won’t be over the limit but still

Next time school send a message about attendance at school, and in particular being on time and stating that being "tired" is not an excuse to be late or absent, I'll remind them of tomorrow. I'm more annoyed that our school told the kids they could come in late before the parents knew, and so the children were immediately pestering for a late start, and obviously don't understand parents work schedules and childcare arrangements don't just shift to accomodate a last minute decision by the school.

Simply tell your children, “You have to go in on time as usual because I have to go to work”.

You’re welcome.

Hardly… they were in the finals last time as well.

And they have won it before (58 years ago)

Nice for younger fans to be able to enjoy it though, whatever happens, I hope they do wim because the excitement of the kids will be lovely to see tomorrow at school

Actually 58 years ago that was the World Cup and not the euros. The England men’s team have never won the euros

Nothing to get upset or annoyed about. Those wfh have a great option to let the kids who stay up late, get ready at a slower pace and be less grumpy. Schools really can't win.

Skybluepinky · 14/07/2024 20:28

They r worried about parents driving whilst still over the limit.

Petulant. I'm not especially into football but a lot of people are. Its a once in 4 year event and not the same as you being too disorganised to get out the door.

We don't do this for other sports or events though. I don't see why football is special.

Schools can do what they like.
But next time my kids late and they send me a shitty text, I'll be popping in for a chat.

Yes, same here!!
