Not to understand why people keep asking about child friendly places to watch the England football match tonight?

What am I missing?

I’ve seen a lot of people asking for ‘child-friendly’ places to watch the Euro 2024 final tonight, what's that about?

OP posts:

They want somewhere that won’t be full of drunk obnoxious swearing football fans? So they can also enjoy the game while their kids watch/sit on iPads?

Not sure why they can’t watch at home mind you… but each to their own.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 14/07/2024 14:18

They want a child friendly place to watch the football.

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 14/07/2024 14:18

They want a place to watch football where they can bring their children along. What’s so difficult to understand about that?

brightyellowflower · 14/07/2024 14:19

I don't understand either. Pubs are for drinking and swearing. No way should adults have to mind what they're doing to accommodate the parents who simply can't be arsed to sit and watch it in their own living rooms.

JurassicClark · 14/07/2024 14:19

The kick off is 8pm BST - they are after a communal experience that isn't full of beer-soaked swearing blokes, I assume, so their younger children can enjoy watching.

Yousaidwhatagain · 14/07/2024 14:20

Not being snarky, but that is so pretty obvious. Are you genuinely asking this? Clearly you do not have children.

There are options other than pubs.

Our local church is putting on the football on a big screen with soft drinks and snacks for anyone who wants to see it without alcohol being involved. Some places are putting it on outsiude screens in parks nearby too.

I quite agree. I don’t want to be surrounded by drunken fans so I won’t be in a pub. It’s quite easy to avoid.

5128gap · 14/07/2024 14:21

People want the experience of watching it in a crowd. Their children may also enjoy it. But it needs to be an environment that's fit for children.

Yes, and people are trying to find a place that isn’t a pub maybe? A local community centre here is screening it with a BBQ, I guess people are asking if there’s something like that near them? You don’t know if you don’t ask!

Needmorelego · 14/07/2024 14:22

A lot of pubs might not be licensed for children that late.

FuzzyPuffling · 14/07/2024 14:23

We're going to church where they are using their big screen to show the footy. Hopefully not much swearing and the kids have plenty of space to run about..

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 14/07/2024 14:23

Pretty obvious.

It's to allow the kids to participate in the communal atmosphere. A bit of drinking and swearing won't kill them, if they were at the matches they'd be getting the same thing.

GreenWheat · 14/07/2024 14:27

An example of the sort of places they are looking for is my local cricket club. They are screening it with a BBQ and the sports pitches open for kids to run around on. That's what they mean. Don't know why everyone is assuming they're asking about pubs. It isn't really tricky to grasp. People want to share a potentially historic sporting evening as a family and with others.

Collexifon · 14/07/2024 14:28

What an absolutely bizarre post.

Our village is putting a screen up in the village hall and there will be loads of kids there. Alcohol will be served but it will be fine as not everyone that watches football is a pissed monster.

IDoLikeToBeByTheSea · 14/07/2024 14:28

I think a lot of pubs have something in their licences about under 18/16 (can’t remember which) not being allowed in after 9pm. Game would still be on at that point

So presumably people are asking for places other than pubs, that are showing the match.

I won't be watching, and my DC will be asleep. But it's not difficult to understand that some people might want to know if anywhere local, other than a pub, is showing it.

No they aren't. I go out to watch the football and boxing and two of the pubs I go in wouldn't put up with that behaviour. The fellas in there wouldn't and yes, we still have a laugh and get tipsy, a few get pissed but aren't a bother.
A lot of pubs are allowing kids in later than usual, but not around the bar. The two pubs I've been in this morning (one for breakfast ) have different sections and one has a playpark and covered area, seperate to a smoking area. Two pubs we've passed on the way home have bouncy castles outside. But as said community centers and church halls etc are also showing it. The community centre opposite were we had breakfast did England themed crafts his morning and a football themed cup cake. The match entry later is (cheaply) ticketed.
Football + pub doesn't mean scum behaviour.

HoppingPavlova · 14/07/2024 14:31

I’m not in the UK so not invested in this but we have our own equivalents. Churches often put games on ‘the big screen’, some of my kids private schools would also do it in school hall (P&C would them fire up bbq, soft drink stall, cake stall etc to make $$). Where I am we also have a few public areas where local councils erect huge blow up screens, they are alcohol free areas and there are often food stalls that come to service the event (they pay a fee to council to be there that in total covers cost of portable loo’s and extra garbage removal/area clean up the event ensues).

So, lots of options people might be asking about instead of just pubs/clubs. Keep in mind lots of teens who are under drinking age and don’t have early bed requirements need to be catered for and often like to view with other supporters rather than on their lounge at home.

They've relaxed some licences and extended opening hours. But the pub has to have the ability to section off the child friendly area etc.

Tamuchly · 14/07/2024 14:34

My DH and kids are off to our local sports club to watch along with many other families (I’m stuck at home because I’m ill unfortunately or I’d be there too!). There’s a bar so some people will be drinking but the vibe is family friendly which is really nice to be part of. I’m gutted that I can’t go!

OldTinHat · 14/07/2024 14:36

I'm going to a local event venue who are showing the match on a giant screen. They are giving all the kids a pizza as part of the entry price (£5) and they're going to have inflatables outside. It's very much promoted as a family event.
