What am I missing?

I’ve seen a lot of people asking for ‘child-friendly’ places to watch the Euro 2024 final tonight, what's that about?

Which parents are asking if they can take their kids in? I've not seen it

We're watching it at home,

Friends and family and neighbours are coming round.

The kids can go straight to bed when it finishes.

It's the epitome of child friendly.

All these people asking can't be homeless with no friends surely?

Makes you wonder why anyone, with or without children, would ever leave the house at all really 🤔

I think the Euros became much bigger in 1996 when it became a proper tournament
Prior to that it was only four teams
I have fond memories of Euro 96 ,it was just a couple of months before a qualified as a nurse and we all sat and watched on the portable TV in lounge of our student house .

Not moaning.

I just didn't understand that when people asked for "child friendly" they meant less child friendly than their own living room but more fun.

I thought if child friendly was the priority then what's more child friendly than at home in their PJs?

You understand exactly. You're the worst type of passive aggressive twinkly laugh head tilt poster.

Dear mumsnet, AlBU to completely not understand how anyone could possibly enjoying watching football and actually want their children to watch it too as it could possibly be history in the making?
I mean, I don't like football, so why should others?

pinksheetss · 14/07/2024 15:32

They want to take in the atmosphere with other fans and celebrate in large groups, being able to take children along and allow them to experience also.

Not that big a deal.

I'm not English (Scottish so will keep my other opinions to myself 🤪) but it's a huge thing for English fans and something they want children to experience also. Potentially a once only type thing

Exactly. Not sure if the OP is actually stupid or deliberately being obtuse.
Not everybody has the space to host a load of people, or wants to clean up/host for that matter. Also you need a big enough TV.

pinksheetss · 14/07/2024 15:35

Also pubs can have licenses that allow children in later, think if they are serving food it's allowed not sure specifics but there's an option to get licence for that.

"Are there any places suitable for children where we can watch the football together as a family?"
"Why do you want to go to the pub. Pubs aren't child friendly. Why are you saying all pubs should ban drinking/swearing to be child friendly."

Well I am assuming they'd like a place outside of their own home, somewhere with a bit of atmosphere and fun, but also somewhere not full of drunk loud adults.

I'd have thought that was fairly obvious tbh.

Yes they could stay home, but sometimes people like to be out and about supporting their team with other people 🤷‍♀️

saraclara · 14/07/2024 15:38

verdantverdure · 14/07/2024 14:43

Because they don't have a living room, a tv, a tv licence, family, friends and neighbours?

Not everyone has that kind of social life. Or maybe their friends and family are going to the pub to watch it, so won't be tempted by an invitation to someone's living room.

But yeah, thanks for making so those of us who don't have anyone to ask over, feel shit.

Longma · 14/07/2024 15:38

brightyellowflower · 14/07/2024 14:19

I don't understand either. Pubs are for drinking and swearing. No way should adults have to mind what they're doing to accommodate the parents who simply can't be arsed to sit and watch it in their own living rooms.

There are other venues showing the match other than pubs round here.

And not all pubs are the same either ime. Some are much more family friendly than others, even in the evening.

Spot on.

YourWildAmberSloth · 14/07/2024 15:39

Pubs are not the only places showing the match. People are asking about those. DS13 school is showing it. They have 2 rooms set up - initially it was one but demand outweighed supply. The kids are looking forward to watching it with their friends as well as family. We have been asked to pay a donation of at least £2 each, so it raises money for the school as well. So there are child/family friendly places out there.

Almost as preposterous as some people's lack of reading and comprehension skills, eh? 😉

Our local pub doesn't have a a time limit for children.
It's a fairly family friendly type of place - the landlords themselves are a couple with a young child. They even run parent and baby groups during the week.
Children are welcome tonight at the pub during the match.

Personally, I’m looking forward to going out for a pint to watch the match in the local social club with my husband, father in law and 18 month old, if she’s unhappy I’ll take her home, if it gets too ‘aggressive’, I’ll take her home. This is a one off occasion and I’m not missing it because football fans are negatively stereotyped. I am sick of these threads acting like I’m an irresponsible parent because of this 😂

I read that as “if she gets too aggressive” and pictured a toddler getting riled up at Foden hitting the cross bar 😂

Your posts reek of someone who a) never goes to pubs when the football's on and b) never goes to pubs. Breathtaking ignorance.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 14/07/2024 15:49

It also depends what age the 'child' is. Under licensing laws there is no difference between a 5yr old and a 15yr old but a parent might consider hearing a bit of swearing a risk worth taking when considering being in a pub with a 15yr old but doesn't want to be chucked out at 9pm so wants to go somewhere their child can stay until the end.

DoreenonTill8 · 14/07/2024 15:50

GreenWheat · 14/07/2024 14:27

An example of the sort of places they are looking for is my local cricket club. They are screening it with a BBQ and the sports pitches open for kids to run around on. That's what they mean. Don't know why everyone is assuming they're asking about pubs. It isn't really tricky to grasp. People want to share a potentially historic sporting evening as a family and with others.

This. Why are posters going straight to 'they mean PUB'?!
