Not to understand why people keep asking about child friendly places to watch the England football match tonight?

What am I missing?

I’ve seen a lot of people asking for ‘child-friendly’ places to watch the Euro 2024 final tonight, what's that about?

It's pretty self explanatory!

Bizarre that the OP is getting exercised about other people choosing to take their kids out. Kids do go out of the house in the evening sometimes, you know. They don't have a curfew.

Not exercised.

I just took the question bit too literally.

I wondered why people were asking for a child friendly place to watch the football when they already have that because it's on ordinary telly.

Why the hell should everything be child friendly?

Who said everything should be?! Do you always assume that threads asking ''Can anyone suggest something to suit X requirement?" are actually saying "All things must suit X requirement!"?

BlowDryRat · 14/07/2024 17:29

It's not just you OP. I saw this post on FB earlier.

See, it's not just me who takes people literally and thinks they're asking for what they say they're asking for Grin

Aww c'mon. You weren't honestly baffled and wondering why people were apparently forgetting they had a telly! Like most of the wide-eyed 'I just don't get why people..." thread posters on MN, you clearly just fancied being judgy about other people's choices.

User3456 · 14/07/2024 16:38

We're watching at home, that's as child friendly as it gets

That was what I thought.

They want child friendly. Watching at home is child friendly, so what am I missing?

So I asked on Mumsnet.

And now here we are Grin

It's because so many people live their lives through Instagram, tik tok and Facebook. You have to be seen to be doing something rather then just doing it for yourselves . If you're not dressed up, filming yourself and screaming with fake excitement then you can't possibly be doing the social media essential that is # making memories

They are asking for child-friendly venues because they want to go out not stay at home.

Just as you might want to ask for dog-friendly cafes (or dog-free ones), or places with a good vegetarian menu, or step-free access.

If you were planning on staying at home, then the question is redundant.

But a meme telling parents to stat at home does seem to be doing the rounds on Twitter. It's a joke not a real suggestion

saraclara · 14/07/2024 18:34

Until this thread, I was envisaging being at home alone as usual, maybe with the match on in the background.

Now I want to go to a pub and watch it with a bunch of strangers, because I've realised how much I'd be missing out.
Do you reckon I could just stroll in to my local pub and not feel like a billy-no-mates?

Tonight, yes quite probably.

But you need to be ready to talk to people and find a friendly bunch to yell along with

Oh I'll be super happy to talk to anyone. But it'll be probably up to them whether they want to absorb me into their bunch.

Fabulous, I hope you do!
I thought initially you were being sarcastic, but you're not and that's great!

I'm Irish and I came across a bunch of Finns watching Ireland v Germany in a pub in Finland many years ago. When they cheered when Ireland scored, I ran over to join them and it was a wonderful feeling. Strangers can be great!

Some of the comments on here are unbelievable
im a mum and I have asked this question and we ask is as people that don’t have kids want to be nosey and get up in other peoples business my little one sleeps in her pram we want to go out and enjoy the atmosphere then sat at home watching football while she sleeps that’s why we ask
I can’t wait until some of you lot have kids

Or because watching sports in a group setting is more fun, I know half of mumsnet like to hide away from any interaction with the world ever. But going out to watch a big football match together including the kids, isn’t for social media for the vast majority of people.

Because they don't want to stay at home? They want to go out and enjoy the football communally with other people, presumably some of whom will also have children, in a location where children will be welcome?

I presume they're not intending to take over pubs and bars up and down the country and spoil the atmosphere by haranguing the drunken, boozy folk to mind their language. Hence the query about whether children are catered for.

But I didn't see any rule or regulation being announced that families with children should shelter in place for the game. Have I missed something?
