The same in UK where they have rampant knife crime but they aren't banning knives....

They have rampant knife crime? Stats, please. How many dead from knife attacks this past year, for example? What kind of knives were they? How would you propose to ban kitchen knives or hunting knives?
Do they have knives that can kill multiple people in the space of mere seconds like assault weapons can? Knives that are not useful for anything but mass murder? No? Then I guess that was a false comparison.

XChrome · 14/07/2024 02:25

Louisaaa · 14/07/2024 02:22

But knives are killing children on the streets of the UK? You care more about cutting food than children. Shame on you. 😂

😆 Think of the chiiillllldren.

MNers who are in a snit about the jokes; remember that jokes don't kill people. Guns kill people. That should be the takeaway, but somehow it never is in America. No matter how many shootings there are, nothing is done.

Jokes don't kill people, but they do contribute to a toxic political culture.

The jokes would be fine if our politicians didn't have to cope with daily abuse and threats of violence, but they do. The jokes just help to create a culture in which this kind of thing is normalised.

Jo Cox was an old friend of mine back in the day. I don't find jokes about violence towards any politician amusing... it's too real to be funny.

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/07/2024 02:27

I'm sorry for any innocent people who have died.

As for Trump I don't condone this shooting but I certainly wouldn't shed a tear. He's a convicted felon and as others have mentioned a rapist. He's a despicable person. The world would be better off without another rapist in it.

Probably for the best.

The gunshots probably woke him up.

You'd have to show me a casual link between jokes about a politician getting shot and politicians actually being shot for me to draw that conclusion.

Did he fuck, sounded like a BB gun

🤔sure if you got shot at in America you'd know the difference. Clearly his bodyguards did.

Killing children is hilarious alright. Knife crime would doubtless be a much bigger problem in the US if guns weren't so freely available. But they are. So gun crime is the major problem. Knives however are household utensils so are necessary, unlike guns, which are unnecessary. No idea what you find funny about any of this tbh. I think Trump is an odious scumbag who has encouraged this type of violence, but it is a sign of a disintegration of civilised society when people are being shot at political rallies. None of that is funny, and is in fact quite terrifying.

Actually knife crime stats are far worse in America.

Trump is a very dangerous man.

I completely agree.
I still don't agree that he should be shot at though.

It's just how people cope with this kind of madness sometimes. The feeling is that the world has gone to shit, so let's laugh while we still can. You could stand to lighten up a bit.

An assassination attempt is not something to "lighten up" over. You are sick.

I'm not saying that there is a causal link between jokes about political violence and candidates getting shot. But I do think that the jokes about political violence feed into a wider political culture which puts many good people off going into politics because of its toxicity. And that is bad for all of us.

BeachParty · 14/07/2024 02:44

MillyNair · 14/07/2024 02:36

We’ll have to agree to disagree.

You can't just go shooting at people you don't agree with though politics wise.
Are you familiar with Jo Cox? Her killer no doubt felt justified in his actions and others would have agreed with him.
It's hard, I'm kind of fence sitting as shooting at people like Trump and missing just shores up support 😥

It's wrong full stop. But there is a certain irony to it given Trump's blasé attitude to public disorder. Hopefully it gives him pause for thought. I doubt it though.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 14/07/2024 02:46

I'm.cùrrently in the US and watching NBC news. No mention of a civilian death here or that the shooter is dead. Just that he's been caught.
Edit: The Atoorney Genersl.just gave condolences to the family of the victim.

It is a shame that during WWII all attempts to assassinate Adolf Hitler failed.

He's not Hitler though is he. He's a vile specimen of humanity, but he can't be compared to Hitler.

ll09sm · 14/07/2024 02:54

What a co incidence that everything that is happening is a sure fire way to get Trump into office. First he’s made out to be bad guy, then everything goes his way starting with everyone miraculously waking up to grandpa Joe being senile. Then a bullet which couldn’t be less lethal if they tried. It’s like a soap opera. A bad one.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 14/07/2024 02:55

I agree that Trump is a vile man and a dangerous one as well. I'm horrified at the idea of him becoming president again.

But we can't just kill the people that we disagree with. I can't believe that anyone seriously thinks this is a solution.

Evil, dangerous men need to be defeated at the ballot box. And yes, it's a crying shame that the Democrats haven't got a candidate that stands a decent chance of beating Trump but violence isn't the answer.

How do you ban knives? They are essential to prepare food. Guns are not essential for everyday life. HTH

It's a problem at least partly of his own making though isn't it. He riled them all up and sat back to watch the ensuing destruction.
